bs bE _______________________y ___LOCAL NEWS. __ AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT CANFERBURY.—Mr. J. H. Ogden, the “Irish Ambaseador,” is a splendid delineator of Irish character, and his performances never fail to occasion shouts of laughter. The rest of the company now at this resort is also splendid, Yor no one knows better than Mr. Lea how to cater to the public’s appetite for amusement. Forp’s THBATER is now occupied by the celebrated Ohristy Minstrels, whose enter- tainments are amusing in the extreme. There asa refinement too about the performances, and all of that low wit and valgarity too often met with in entertainments of this character Hind no place with the Christy's. Vaniatizs. — Fitzsimmon’s drama, “The Belle ot Washington,” is still the main card here, and is visited nightly by delighted crowds. Besides this drama there is always given a geod bill of song, dance, and Ethi- opean eccentricity. ae. Po.toz RePorts.—Second Precinct—Oatha- rine Donovan, selling whisky unlicensed; dis- missed. Clarke, a young and wealthy planter, of Prince George's coun- ty, put an end to his lite on Saturday by shoot- ing himself through the head with a pistol. He had been for some time in a gloomy condi- tion of mind, and his friends were preparing to take him on a journey, hoping that he would derive benefit from a change of air and scene. On Friday he wrote s letter, in which he stated he could not trust bimself any longer, and ex- Pressed the desire that $10,000 of his estate might be given to a lady to whom he was be- trothed. Mrs. Mulligan, a lady residing in the same neighborhood, has also deceased, and Mrs. Contee, widow of Capt. John Contee, late of the navy, who was an accomplished lady, es- sayed to visit one of her daughters, and al- though in usual health, she expired within half @n hour after crossing the threshold. By this striking mortality, three large es- tates in the very best portion of Maryland ‘will soon, under legal forms, pass into new hands. Lecky.—Yesterday, a small boy named Chace, picked np a bundle containing $129 in | ‘Treasury notes, and $3 in Pennsylvania notes, all burntard charred. Officer Greer, of the Third Ward, reported the fact to headquarters. Roundsman Shaid was returning from the Superintendent's office with the package, when it was recornized by Mr. John H. Dittman, of Chambersburg. He said that he left his mon- ey in atin box in bis house not expecting that the Rebels, who were then in the town, would | burn the houses. 1 hey set fire to his dwelling and destroyed it. and his money in this burnt And charred condition was all that he recov- ered. He came to Washington to endeavor to bave it made good at the Treasury, and was on bis way to the Department when he los* the package. Degens, of Prince George's county, reeoz- mized a horse in the possession of John W. Groves as having been stolen from a neighbor, Jobn H. Downey, in March last, and he in- formed Officer Berkeley, who arrested Groves and took him, with the horse, before Jusiice Cull. Groves proved that he purchased the horse from James Liarson, and the latter was also arrested by Officer Berkeley, and thecase was heard by Justice Cull. Mr. Liarson al- leges that be purchased the horse in March from a cclored man, and it 1s known that a colored man inthe neighborhood disappeared At the same time the horse was stolen. oves ‘was dismissed and Liarson gave security fora further hearin —— CorREOTION.—Mr. Canfield was understood, by our reporter in the Board of Aldermen, on Monday night.to designate the communica- tions from D. E. Irving and W. W. Kirby (in relation to the remonstrance, by Messrs. Sess- ford and Robinson, against the confirmation of the Jatter as police ‘onstable) as disrespectfal. Jt appears, however, that it was not either of these communications that was thus designated az objectionable, but a second one from Mr. Kirby, and which Mr. Canfield declined to resent to the Board, on the ground that it at- ‘a ked the private character of the gentlemen ‘who had remonstrated against his (Kirby’s) confirmation. se EE, A Mcss.—Yesterd ‘vy afternoon, Wm. Batzou ‘was arrested by officer Brennan tor using « abusive language to wards Patrolli,a musician, | who lives next door to him, and the case was | beard by Justice Call, when tt appeared that they bad a quarrel about a division fecce, and that Patrolli called Batzou a bull dog, when tbe latter abueed him roundly, calling him an old bog. The trial excited considerable interest, the whole neighborhood turning out to hear the upshot of the case. The justice advised Batzou not to apply such names as ball dogs to Pa- trolli any more, and finec him $5 and held him to security to keep the peace. ——>———_ GrRanp LARCENY. ‘bis morning, Sarah Beckman. colored, was arrested by officer Crown _for the larceny of a $100 note from Henry Williams, colored.
