LOCAL NEWS. _ | ee a et AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Grover’s THEATER.—Mr. S. W. Glenn, who bas managed Grover's Theater for 8 week or twe past, takes a benefit to-night, and will appear in the amusing character of ‘‘Haver- sack,” in the «Old Guard.” George O. Charles, La Belle Emelie, and others of the company will alse appear. CANTERBURY. — Another performance of song, dance and Ethiopian eccentricity will be given to-night. Wortay or ATTENTION.—On Monday night a communication from the commissioners of the asylum and poor house was transferred to tbe Board of Aldermen relative to making the asylum and workhouse remunerative by com- pelling the ates to labor. Tbe commissioners say that in the law made for the government of the asylum it is a fund- amental principle that employment must be provided for all persons in the asylum capable of any species of labor In order to carry out the law it is requisite that some one of the com- misstoners shall be authorized to apply funds uppropriated by the corporation for the asy- Jum to purchase raw materials, machinery, tools and impiements, and to dispose of all articles made up, wove, spun, knitted, picked, or otkerwise prepared. The commissioners believe this could be done with much advantage to the corpora- mew tion it is 17 years since the law was passed, and it is in effecta dead letter, when if properly carried Out $50,000 might have been realized by ‘workhouse labor. The name of workhouse as applied to the institution 1s a misnomer and the inmates spend their time in idleness, plotting mischief. To carry out the recommendations of the ‘Commissioners it will be requisite to have one of them designated to give his whole time to the <n intendence of the work, withsuch | @ Bdditional remaneration as would be proper, d there is no doubt that the Corporation “would be larg+ly 2 gainer by the arrangement. Wot only could a large sum be gained by the labor, but the prisoners themselyes would be benefitted by being kept out of idleness. 5 Over, it would have the effect to keep away a host of Iazzareni who hate work and patronize » the almshouse only so long as they ean be boarded and lodged in idleness. This swarm of vagrants have been a terrible burden upon the Corporation, and by patise them to hard ‘work ss fast as they reach the almshouse they ‘would heareafter give that institution a wide berth The communication of the Commissioners ‘was referred to the asylum comm#tee, which ‘Will, we trust, give the matter early attention. a ages Wat DerartMent RIFLes.—The above is he title of the regiment composed of clerks irom the different bureaus of the War Depart- ment. The regiment is composed of good ma- terial, and will undoubtedly make a fine ap- pearance, and be of great service to the Goy- ernment in case of an emergency. The men beve been armed, uniformed and equipped in all respects similar to a regiment in the field— the uniform consisting of a dark blue blonse, light blue pants (like those of the Veteran Re- serve Corps), and army regulation caps. The eflicers have been commissioned by the Secre- M™tary of War, but services rendered under the Appointment are to be without pay or rations, and the regiment has been organized under the Ammediate supervision of Brigadier General James B. Fry, Provost Marshal General U.S. fi. The men composing this regiment haye been sworn into the service of the United States for the term of three years, and itis under- Stood thatthe Secretary of War has ordered a the erection of a suitable building to be used As an armory. The following are the officers :—Capt. Sam’l Dana, 17th U.S. intantry, Colonel; Captain Franklin H. Barroll, 2d U. nfantry, Lieut. Colonel; Capt. Geo. E. Scott, V. R.C., Major; Surgeon J. H. Baxter, U.S. Vols., Surgeon: Lieut. Alex. A. C. Klaucke, Adjutant; Lieut. ©. A. McLaughlin, Quartermaster. Coptains.—Co. A, 1. W. Doud; Co. B, H. E. Scott; Co. C, N. T. Hartshorn; Co. D, H. Doug- ii Co. E, J. H. Edson; Co. F, L. L. James; ©o. G. R. A. Hills; Co. H, G. C. Putnam; Vo. I, J.T. Usher; Co. K, A. B. Butts. The regiment drills for one hour every after- noon, Sundays excepted, in the grounds be- tween the War Departmentand the President's House. Larceny Casys.—On Wednesday evening, Henson Jacksou, colored, complained at the *.nth precinct station that he had been robbed of a five dollar bill by W. White and George Brent, colored, and they were arrested by of- ficer Ashton, who took them before Justice Beswell. lt appeared that the three were ina house where the accused were playing cards, and during the game Brent stated that he had ost $5. White proposed that all should be Searched, and several submitted to the opera- tion, but Jackson refased, at the same time daying a five dollar note on the table, which Brent pocketed. The Justice held Brent to se- curity for court and dismissed White. On the same evening, a colored boy (Daniel = Buckley) was arrested by officer Barker for Sobbing the money drawer of Wm. Fagan of $7.55, and he was taken before Justice Bos- ‘well, whocommictea him to jail for court. The smoney had been carried to a stable and hid in ahe hay, where it was found by Mr. Fagan. Tue Mops oF CANINE SLavGuTeR.—The use of strychnine by the police m the killing of dogs found running at large without being * muzz‘ed, as required by law, has been pro- hibited by the etty authorities. The Superin- tenéent of Police has therefore detailed two men in each ward to shoot suchanimals. The order vas issued Tuesday, and on that night the Fourth Ward officers tested their skill in the use of fowling-pieces by shooting twenty- five dogs. If the men detailed in other pre- wtucts are as successful as the Fourth Ward gunvers, the cartmen employed by the Corpo- Yation will be kept busy for a few days. From the pumber of dogs yet running at large un- Muzzled, it would appear that their owners Bre rather anxious than otherwise to get rid ot aheir worthless curs. -— Tue Rior Cass.— Yesterday morning, while the trial of the parties charged with participat- ing in the riot, near Branch Hospital, on ‘Thureday, in which Robert Stroupe, §th Penn- Sylvania cavalry, was killed, was progressing betore Justice Cull, the military authorities @ in 4 measure abated the nuisance, by pulling Gown two of the shanties near the scene of riot, one of which was occupied by Mrs. Ann Thompson. Subsequently officers Shelton, Grant, and Brennan arrested Mrs. Thompson and Richard O’Kieff, the former for selling Without license and to soldiers, and the last * pamed for selling to soldiers, and they were yon fined $20 each by Justice Cull. pL Bas CE Doc SHOoTING.—Officer Walling and Shel- ton have been detailed to destroy dogs at large in the Sixth Ward, and are rapidly extermi- mating the canines who have notthe wire muz- zie over their smellers. On Wednesday after- noon, in the prosecution of their business, they shot a dog on the corner of East Capitol and tth streets. A Capt. Cambell here abused the Officers for the act, and while so engaged, his dog showed itself on the street, and being un- muzzled, was also shot, and this enraged the @aptain up to the boilmg point, and he became @o disorderly that he was arrested and taken * Before Justice Cull, who fined him #2.50, and explained the law on the subject. ; ie EE RECRUITING AT THE Navy-Yarp.—The officers at the Navy-Yard are using more cau- tion in shipping men for the Navy, and con- sequently the number accepted is smaller than formerly ; nevertheless, the average number per day is about twelve accepted. There is but one clerk employed in shippmg men, and from the number offering he finds it almost Ee a era? to attend to all. At present able- Vocied men are received as substitutes, but boys are only taken as volunteers. During the Jast two or three weeks over 200 have been shipped pee AsssAULTED.—Thursday afternoon, as Henry Dutcher, asoldier, was passin, zy 4x3 street, Island) three other soldiers, N. H.
