THE EVENING STAR. THE SHENANDOAH VALL m the Enemy—The P: not yet Crossed—The Fighting and dents. Cor) ndence of the Chroniele.} Bar sinks: 43 Trict» . July 2—The latest advices | at 130 p. m., state that rebels were to be foand from Harper’s: Feri all was quiet there. bw: side of the river, nor had any demons‘ra- fons been made to cross at any of the lower fords, all of which were guarded. There were no rebels north of the Baltimore and Onio rail- road, Gen. Wzight’s headquarters were at Monoc- acy at noon, and the line of his forces was ex- tended from that point nearly to Edwards’ Ferry. The fords above were not guarded, end yet there had been no appearance of the enemy in the vicinity of Shepherdstown or Sharpsburg. From these and other indica- liens, showing that they donot courta con- flict, the general conviction among our troops was that they had no intention of crossing the | river at all. Immediately after they had driven General | Crook, they recommenced the harvesting in which they had been engaged before their coliision with that officer. Our lines were Jast night (Wednesday) all on the north side ofthe river. General Hunter issued orders to Severe Wright to remain in his present posi- on Gen. Crook assumed command of the troops to-day, and sbortly after orders were issued to recross the river. The different estimates of the rebel forces Which the investigations of the scouts of the commands of Hunter and Wright have in- daced, confirm the statement of our previous letter. The gereral ae ee being that they do pot number 50,'00. It was ramored at the jerry that Gen. Grant had telegraphed to Gen. Hunter to hold Maryland Heights at all haz. | ard, and that he would be amply reinforced in a cay or two. The movements of Gen. Wright, under the | order of to-day, it was expected, would be in advance of those ot Crook’s forces. The latter General was believed to have determined to attempt to compel the rebels to abandon their harvesting inthe Valley of the Shenandoah. It was expected,in view of this determination, aud of the fact tha: marching orders had been ordered, theta collision would take place to- mcrrow. A considerable portion werereclothed and otherwise reprovisioned to-day. The men, though much worn, were in better spirits than ter several days past. They are anxious todo ali in their power towards cutting off the raid- ers, but do not express very sanguine hopes of auecess in such purpose. The officers of Hunter’s command, who have revently passed through the Valley of the Shenandoah, state that the crops there are very abundant, and that success in harvesting and conveying away even a fair proportion of them would fully repay the enemy for all the toil and losses of Pag sappvay expedition. Our Jostes in the fight at Winchester, they say, did mot amount to one thousand, though there was a large number of the troops who were so much worn by the fight, in addition to their previous privations and hardships, that they ‘were not in efficient fighting or even retreating condition. The command of Crook (late Hun- ter’s) 18, however, still formidable enough, with such accessions as they are sure to have in a few days, fully to cope with the rebels, if er succeed in keeping them within reach. f the circumstances of Mulligan’s casualty, ‘We lesrn that he was wounded while gallantiy charging at the head of his brigade. He was hit twice—once in the shoulder and again in ithe thigh—and fell from his horse. Though eompletely overpowered, his troops rallied around bim and endeavored tosave both him andthe colors. Whileasquad of them were e«rrying him off the field, the rebels charged Bpon them, and finding that they could not earry off both him and the colors, Mulligan twice ordered them to leave him and save the eolors. Finally they obeyed the first part of the order, and sought to comply with the ether pert of it; but they had delayed too long. ‘They were surrounded and both the Qolonel and their colors captured. It was feared that he had died from the effects of his wounds, which were known to be very severe. To-day fing of truce wentoutto the enemy's lines, teeom ay panied by Mrs. Mulligan, to get his ody. The order of General Hunter, issued a few days ago, that all the secessionists of Freder- ick should be sent south of the lines, was to- day being enforced PEF. Later. Battm™ore, July 28—11 p. m.—Martinsburg is tupposed to have been evacuated to-day by the enemy, Lieut. Nugent, 34th Ohio, was killed while endeavoring, on Sunday, to carry from the field Colonei Mulligan. Lient. Bains, 161st Ohio, was drowned to-day im the Monocacy. General Honter still commands the Depart- Ment of Virginia; General Crook, the troops ia the field. The enemy 4re believed to be falling back, preperatory to an advance im another direc- tion. Our forces are moving in pursuit. The bridge over Black creek, on the Ohioand Baltimore railroad, has been burned. No other damage. . . @7 More than three handred rebel sympa- ‘Wisers were cent north from Nashville, in three days, under Gen. Sherman’s recent or- ders.
