Two white men. strangers, had visited the fairroom and presented a note, of which the following is acopy. The messenger thought it was a for- gery, ard wanted the police to say whether they should «lose their church The officers, of course, told them to go on with their festi- ‘val, as the note was bogus: WasHincTon, July 2ist, 1564. Mr, Payne, I hereby notify you not to hold Meetings in your meeting house after 10 o’clock, &s the neighbours have lodged a complaint of being disturbt of there rest. If I hear any more of this you will be made to pay a fine, and the parties after 10 o’clock be arrested. Mayor WALLIC. ALEXANDRIA AFFalRs.—Cavalry Scout.—A cavalry scouting party, consisting of detach- ments from the Inth New York and Ist Michi- gan cavairy regiments, returned to the city from an extensive scoat in the direction of Oc- coquan village and Wolf Run Shoals. They met with no guerrillas, and ascertained that Kincheloe with his band had been ordered away from that vicinity on last Tuesday. The party camped at 3 o’clock this morning in the vicinity of Accotink, tre loyal citizens of which place extended to the fatigued and hungry troops a cordial welcome, ani would notallow them to depart this morning until each individual of them had been bountifully Teplenished trom their own tables. Such hos- beeen to Union troops is not often found in he regions traversed by our scouts, nor are any better Union men than those who dwell in the vicinity of Accotink to be found any- where.—Alez. Journal, July 22. > A Hint.— Yesterday afternoon as one of the city railway passenger cars was passing the State Department it was hailed by a richly dressed lady, orfemale. The car, which was crowded with passengers at the time, was stopped, and the lady, er female, entered, whereupon an elderly gentleman arose trom his seat and offered it to the woman, which she took without asign of recognition of the cour- tesy shown ber. A momentortwo afterwards the gentleman turned to the lady and said, «Madam, did you speak!” to which the female replied ‘-No, sir.” “Oh, excuse me,” the gen- tleman remarked, “I thought you thanked me.” The passengers seeing the “point,” laughed, and a sudden effusion of color upon the wo- man’s face indicated that she too saw it. ae NEEgps ATTENTION.—The ranche of Mary Ann Burke, on south G street, between 9th and 10th streets west, has been an intolerable nui- sance for a long time, being the resort of both white and colored prostitutes, and a place of frightful disorder. It is a place continually frequented hy soldiers, who get liquor there, and under its wfluence behave in a way to Inake themee! : es the terror of the neighborhood. ‘The police have tried many times to correct the evil, but find themselves utterly powerless, as ‘whenever she is arrested and sent to the work- house, she always finds means to get bailed out, and “starts business” again. The Provos' (juard would find it worth their while to give this ranche an overhauling. ge MILITARY ORGANIZATIONS.—The clerks of the Second Auditor's office hava formed two companies, and are officered as follows: First Company—UCaptain, G. B. Kenniston; Ist Li-u- tenant, A. Jordan Swatz; 2d Lieutenant, Chas. H. Gardner. Second Company—Captain, S. B. Morse: ist Lieutenant, Geo. G. Colby; 2d Lieutenant, G W. Akers. The colored laborers attached to Assistant Quartermaster Allen's office, foot of 7th street, have been formed into two companies, and drillone hour every day, Sundays exceptad. They are tully armed and equipped, and ap- pear to make considerable progress in military tactics. The clerks and other employees ofthis Office are also torming into a company. ge CARELESS SHOOTING —A féw nights since, as @ party of ladi-s and gentlemen from the Navy ‘Yard were taking a pleasure trip in the Eastern Branch, when off Buzzard’s Point, a ball, fired by some person on shore, passed among the excursionists, striking the water just beyond, Those on the boat were singing and amusing themselves at the time, and when this incident occurred immediately stopped, when the party who fired inquired and received the name of the boat, which passed on. It is thought that it ‘was & centry who fired at the boat; but ifsuch is the case, we suggest that he should have fired a blank cartridge first, or else not fired among the party in the boat, who, by the way, barely escaped — One or 'Em!—Yesterday afternoon, officer Nicholson arrested & colored woman, named Sarab Johnson, who had afew days before been released from the workhouse on the charge of being druvk and disorderly. In taking her along, quite 8 crowd was attracted, and she stopped in the street and disrobed herself, and refused to go further, when other officers came up and placed her in a wagon,in which she was hauled to the Fifth ward Station, from whence she was sent to her old quarters this Morning by Justice Ferguson. ae Festival For PaTRiotic PurPoses.—The German Soldiers’ Relief Association propose giving a grand festival for the benefit of sick and wounded soldiers, at Beyer’s Seventh street Park, on Monday, 25th instant, commen- cing atlo’clock p.m The object 1s a most laudable one, and as our most prominent Ger- msn citizens are at the head of it, par'icipants may feel assurea of realizing much enjoyment, at the same time ihat they realize the fact that they are contributing to @ most worthy cause, a Fovurta Warp Station Oases.—Edward Myers, violating hack law; $1.58.
