The high prices current stirinlated iabor, and the extraamount of work performed by the men remaining mde up for the deficiency caused by the trans- | Yer ef men trom the farms to the battle-fleld. ‘We arrive at tee conclusion that in the West we re certain of good crops of wheat, oats and hay, and taking the three together, the yield os larger than last year. ‘in addition to this, mere is a iarge surplus of old wheat in the country. Ii follows, as ® matter of conrse, that con- sumers need not be discouraged Iu consequence ef the ‘high price te which breadstaffa have been forced. Speouisiors are having their dap now. The mania mustrunits course, but the | moore violent it becomes the sooner it will end. ‘The taws of trade will equalize matters in the | #6. The consumiug masses can afford to bear the Tigh prices otrrent fora brief period. Soon prices and speculators will go down together. The country has been blessed with good crops. Mor this there is abundant cause to be thank- fal. Where it others ise, high prices would he "permanent, While now they can be but tempor- ary. in regard %o corn, itis too early, in view of tne lateness of the season, to judge as to the re- sultof the crop, but the late rains have im- | proved ths prospect very materially, and there a8 reason to hope that the yieid will be greater than jJast year, ifit does not reach a full aver- age. eonsider that prices of breadstuifs in England are now, as they have been for a year past, unuetally low, and the present prospects are not favorable to any change for the better in tunis Tegard. The present price of Ohio super- fine flour in England isequal to $4.30 in gold. Thts would not justify the payment of over | $2.75 in gold in this market for that description of flour, while it sold yesterday at $9.50, and was held in many cases as high as $9.75a$10in eurrency. High, therefore, as is the premium on gold, the inflation in the price of flour is greater. In view ot all these tacts, and the further fact that the supplies of flour are large, the effect of a permanent decline in gold ‘pon prices may readily be imagined. Specu - jators are standing ona mere shell, through which they may bresk atany time and disap- pear out of sight. Theee remarks apply also to otherarticles of food. The great fact that we have large stocks and good harvests may be lost sight ofnow, but the time is not far distant when theories will give way to reali- | ties, and then men who imagine themselves the possessors of fortunes will see their riches disappearing on the wings of the morning, and their own recklessness will be the only cause for surprise. ADVANCE IN THE PRICEOF NEWSPAPERS.— The New York Times, Tribune and World have advanced the price of their papers from three to four cents per copy, and the subscrip- tion price from $8 to $10 per annum. The ‘Tribune, im making the announcement, says: «+ All the materials used in the publication of & newspaper have iereely, advanced in price within the last few months. The white paper on which we print the daily Tribune costs more than we:receive from the sale of the printed sheet, and every additional demand for the paper is somuch added loss. We are there- fore compelled to advance the price of this pa- per, which from and after to-morrow, July 21, will be tor a single copy, 1 cents, or, where de- livered in the city by carriers, 2} cents a week. The mail subscribers to the Daily will be charged St) per annum.” price “From and after to-morrow, Thursday morn- | ing, July 21, until further notice, the price of the New York Times will be 4 cents foreach single copy. This increase is rendered abso- | lutely necessary by the enormous and constant | advance in the price of white paper, and in- deed of everything elee that enters into the manufactureof anewspaper. It is intended only to meet & temporary difficulty, and we hope it will not be of long continuance.” We doubt not that the newspapers through- outihe country will be compelled to follow { the example of the New York papers. A Cxinese Trick.—The custom-house an- thorities at San Francisco discovered a very imgenious Chinese trick, which led to the seizure of ancther lot of smuggled opium. Among the cargo of the bark Ceres were 40) tubs, invoiced as eggs, value stated at $1 each. The eggs ‘were coated with a peculiar kind of varnish to | preserve them. One of the officers, in examin- ing the eggs, scraped off a little varnish, and disclosed a metallic case, egg-shaped, filled | with opium. Each metallic egg is worth $300. So far as the examination has proceeded, three hundred have been found.
