LOCAL NEWS. —_ AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. CanTEnauryY—The amusing Canterbury troupe open tha week with an unusually good bill, and John Mualhgan, W. B. Cavanagh, Johnny Redden, Dougherty, Williams, and the other tavorites, male and female, will take part, and, as usval, give an entertainment to delight all who may visit them. Sanrorp’s Trovrs of minstrels, combined with that of Dick Parker, continues their enter- tainmentsatGrover’s Theater. They are richly deserving of an extended patronage, for their performances re of a high order, and at the same time exceedingly amusing. Admission only 25 cents. Opp Fettows’ Pic-Nic.—The pic-tic of Ori- ental Lodge of Odd Fellows will commence at one o'clock to-day, and will be continued throughout the afternoon and evening. It will take place .at Beckert’s Garden, Navy-Yard, and it is safe to say that it will be a delightful affair. ates OrgENiNG OF THE CONGREGATIONAL METH- opist CHAPEL.— Yesterday, at Li o'clock a, my the chapel of the Congregational Methodistsy M ‘street, between 9th and 10th streets west ‘was opened for service, and the little building was crowded to its utmost capacity. It was designed that the morning services should be conducted by Rev G. W. Samson, D. D..of the Baptist persuasion, but the illness of Mr. S. prevented him, andthe discourse was deliv- ered by the pastor, Rey. T. W. Brown, from Matthew 17th chapter, =th verse. Ot Saturday evening, during the holding of achoir meeting in the church edifice, a de- tective officer made his appearance, bearing a communication from Col. Wisewell, military Governor, directed to T. J. Magruder and some sixor eight others, formerly connected with tMe old Methodist Church South. The com- Munication contained an order directing that thé American flag be hoisted over the church edifice: otherwise it could not be opened. As the address of the communication bore the mame of eut one person connected with the present organization, the members of the choir esitated in receiving it, but it was read aloud and the members present informed the detec- tive officer that they were quite willing to ‘worship under the flag, but as it was so late they would be unable to obtain one in time for the opening of the church on Sunday morning. Mr. J.C. McKelden, one of the founders of the new churcb, was deputized to call upon Col. Wisewell and inform him of their posi- tion, and learn from him the wish of the mu tary authorities. Mr. McKelden called at Col. Wisewell’s office, but the Colonel was absent. After a conversation between Mr. McKelden and an officer in charge of the military head- quarters it was agreed that the military au- thorities would furnish a flag, and accordingly early yesterday morning an officer appeared at the church with a large sized American flag, which was placed over the main entrance of the church by the officerand one of the mem- bers of the congregation. The churcn members allege that the commu- nication directing the erection of the flag was an embodiment of the article which appeared in the Chronicle of Saturday morning last. They admit, however, that the utmost courtesy ‘was shown them by the military authorities. The leaders of this congregation assert that their organization is separate and distinct from the old Southern ethodist congregation. Several of the late members of that church are connected with the First Congregational Methodist, itis understood. ‘The dedication of the church was postponed until next Sunday,in consequence of the il!- ness of Rev. Mr. Samson. The chapel is a wooden structure located on M street north, between ‘ith and ivth, upon a lot several feet above the grade: and the chapel front being 25 feet from the building line, a portion of the lot remains to be oraamented, and that can be done to correspond with the style of the chapel. the rural styie. The dimensions of the building are 35 by 55 feet. It is entered by a projecting vestibule, opening by side doors to the main hall. The ceiling is 1934 feet clear, and the walls are plas- tered and laid off in blocks, so painted as to Tesemble sandstone masonry. The pews are61 im number, and will comfortably seat 400 per- sons. The choir, upon the occasion of the dedication, was made up of singers from various choirs, Jed by Prof. Daniel, assisted by_Mr. Afbert T. Tasker. This church was erected at a cost of tour thousand dollars, all of which has been paid but fitteen hundred dollars. At the conclusion of the services a collection was taken up to liquidate this debt, and 2 handsome sum was realized. ices 38 Tue Seconn D. C. REGI¥BNT.—This gallant Tegiment, of which the District of Cosumpia may well feel proud, took an active part dar- ing the invasion of Maryland. When on Mon- day the rebels made their appearance on the hiils opposite Fort Stevens and extended heir dimes nearly as far as Fort Slocum a detach- ment of this regiment under command of Lieuts. ‘Taylorand Pearson were deployed as skir- mishers on the right from the turnpike road to Fort Slocum, and ina masterly manner, Kept at bay the advance of the rebels, under heavy fire, all the afternoon until sundown, when they were relieved by a part of the 6th army corps. To the 2d is due the credit of dislodging the Tebel sharpshooters from and burning all those houses outside the forts. The most conspica- ous in theranks was Captain Thompson, of company H, with a musket in his hand doing duty as @ private. Captain Dubant, formerly captain of company B, was also there as a cit- izen soldier, doing duty in the ranks. Colonel Alexander deserves great credit for his cool- hess of manner durii whole time. Smwart—Very.—There is & driver of a Gov- eTnment team, hauling hay and straw from the forage depot at the foot ot 7th street, who cer- tainly deserves a premium for his smartness. ‘This morning he s.arted with a load and when iit the corner of 7th and H street, (south,) the Tope securing the bales of straw upon the wag- on became loosened, and in order to remedy the matter he applied to the Blacksmith shop there for a red hot poker, and attempted to burn a larger hole for the rope immediately beneath one of the bales. The red hot poker came in contact with the dry straw and at once fired 1t; causing & total destruction of two bales, and a partial injury to others. The whole load, and probably the contents of other wagons near by would have been destroyed but for the exer- tions of bystanders and other teamsters. We could not learn the teamster’s name, but he certainly onght to be photographed for exhibi- Uon 45 @ Curiosity. pi et eee Rosernc So-piers.—Yesterday, Edw’d H. Turner, of the 6th corps, made complaint to the Metropolitan detectives that he had been robbed of a gold watch and chain, valued at $250, while asleep in a room at the Mount Ver- non House, corner of th street and Pennsylya- nigavenue. Detective Bigley took charge of the case. He ascertained that two soldiers slept in the same room with Turner, but had lett. The detective traced one of them to Campbell Ho: him with the watch and chain op him. He gave his name as John J. Monroe. The com- p!sint was made at? o'clock p. m., and at4 p. m. Stoek, colored, a boot black, was arrested Saturday night by officer Lynch, for stealing 822 from Mary Brooks. He was locxed up in 2 cell of the Fourth Ward station with another boy. Inthe morning when looking atter the prisoners, the officer discovered the cell locked and one prisoner only in tt. The efficer asked what had become of the other.
