LOCAL NEWS. _ AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. CAWTERBURY.—The last opportunity of witnessing the play of the “Bushwhackers efthe Potomac,” isat band, and the crowds who have witnessed it can testify how well it ‘Was produced. The rest of the company will also appear in a bill replete with fan, and as is usual on Saturday night, the house will no doubt be crowded. Sawrorp’s TRovrs of minstrels, combined ‘with that of Dick Parker, continues to give de- lightful entertainments at Grover’s theater. “The Exempts,” the black letter version of «Romeo and Juliet,” «The Rival Lovers,” and numerous other acts are announced for to-night. —_—_.——_ Aw OUTRAGEOUS CASE OF BIGAMY.—Yes- terday atternoon aman named Michael Owens, alias John West, was taken before Justice Clayton to answer & charge of bigamy pre- ferred against him by & rather intelligent and retty looking Irish woman now residing in ortland,Maine. The'statement of the woman ‘was to the effect that‘O wens and she were ani- ted in marriage in 1557 in Ireland, that shortly after the marriage they emigrated to New York, where ashort time afterwards Owens deserted her, and she subsequently gave birth toa child of which he was the father. The child bas since died, but Owens never did a thing for it or towardsits support. For nearly five years the wite has not heard of ber bus- band, he having enlisted in the U.S. army in this city under the name of John West. | After his time expired he still remained bere. A warrant was placed in the hands of de- tectives Clarvoe and McDevitt, and on Tburs- day they arrested Owens in Alexandria, where be was living with his wite No. 2—Annie McNamara—to whom he was married in 1963. Owens was brought to this city and committed to jail for a hearing saber afternoon, when both his wives appeared. ‘The hearing was, however, further postponed; but from conver- sation between the parties in the justice’s of- fice we learned the foregoing and following (2 a appears that Owens became acquainted with Anna McNamara, and, representing him- self as a single man, he induced her to marry him. The issue of this marriage was one ebuild, which was born last Monday, and which the mother had with her. Mrs. Owens No. 2 is a fine-looking, intelligent girl, evidently having some degree of education, and she ap- to be almost heart-broken at her sitaa- tion. She stated that she was not aware her husband was a married man until the day of bis arrest. This was corroborated by Owens himself, who acknowledged that he Rad de- ceived her and done her a great wrong; and he did not deny that he had been married twice, but excused himselt by saying he believed his first wife dead, as he had not heard from her in the last five years. The second wife, while she upbraided Owens with his perfidy, did not seem to desire his punishment, but advised him to go with his first and only wite, and do justly by her, and she hoped God would for- give him as freely as she did. Sne said she did not claim him atall, although until within a day or two ago she supposed he was her law- ful husband, and she trusted her friends would have charity enough to see that she had com- mitted no wilful crime in living with Owens. ‘There was present at the J ustices office yester- day also 8 man named Gilmartin who was up- braided for the part he had taken in the mat- ter. Itappears he was aware of the fact that Owens was & married man and yet he stood by and saw him wedded to Annie McNamara, and represented that Owens was a single man; thus becoming a party tothe outrage. When accused of this, Gilmartin did not, deny the fact, but excused the act by arguing that both he and Owens being soldiers in the U.S. ser- vice, it virtually divorced them from their ‘wives as no one butthe United States could Dave any claim upon them. He said he be- lieved this and therefore he allowed thesecond marriage to go on as he believed Owens was a free man. Owens was recommitted for a further hear- SES el, - AFFAIRS IN GEORGETOWN.—The town is remarkably dull; very little, comparatively, doing even in the immediate vicinity of the market place. Trade by the canalis completely suspended, mo boats arriving or departing. Although there is no serious damage done to theembank- ments, culverts, &c., there are obstructions in the capal which, it is supposed, will require some days to remove, and regular business along the entire route will not be resumed until the Ist of August. A number of boats laden ‘with coal were burned by the rebels, and the ruins and sunken coal must be removed. The country trade by the roads is very light; but this will be resumed in the coming week. At least there is a hope of resumption. The sus- pension of active business is telt by all George- town merchants, but falls most heavily upon the coal companies, whose reliance for sup- plies is upon the Chesapeake and Ohio canal.
