Cantzgpury.—lt 15 certainly worth the while of ail whe would enjoy a hearty laugh Ro pay a visit to Canterbury Hall and witness the performance of the «Bushwhackers of the Potomac.” Some well known characters about ‘Washing'on are so well taken off that no one wan fail to recognize the picture. Other acta, &c., will also be performed. Sanrorp’s Troupe, at Mr. Grover's cool and comfortable theater, continues to attract good audiences, who manifest much delight with the performances. All the actsandsongs of this fine troupe are rich, rare And racy— just of such a character as to suit this warm weather. a REeRL APPRECIATION OF SYMPATHIZERS ALLustRaTep.—Mr. U. W. Thompson, former- ly of the Metropolitan Police, who is now managing & farm about 1 miles out on the 7th street road, was under the especial attention of Rebel officers during the recent invasion, aad had a tair opportunity of judging of their ap- preciation of sympathizers. His first intro- duction to them was in his eorn house, Where he was surprised by four of the Rebels. They complimented his corn, but took only about Six bushels. They asked him how he stood ** on the goose ? and he told them he was an “outand out Union man, for the Union for- ever” The chief: f the party remarked + you are the first upright man we have met, and shall be paid as far as we can pay you.” They then gave him a dollar greenback—a rather cheap price. The officers visited him frequent- ly, and took his norse and & colored man, but before they retreated sent back his horse and Servant. They toldhim that whensver they met a man who came crying and pleading sympathy, they took his horses and cattle and pouliry, for they knew him to be a d—d sneak, especially when he shouted and cheered for Jeff Davis. Just before leaving, one of theof- ficers remarked that they, the rebels, designed to capture Washington, and their plan was to enter the city from three points simultaneous- a4y—by the Tennallytown and 7th street turn- pikes and the Baltimore Railroad. But they ‘were deceived in the strength of the Federal force here to defend the city. The officers told him that they hada good many Washing- tonians among them, and mentioned Dr. ©. Boyle, three Spencers and Ben Howard. Mr. ‘Thompson admits that he was badly fright. ened, but thought honesty the best policy, and it proved true. In order to see ifhe had been favored, Mr. ‘Thompson inguired and learned that the rebels had freely used the property of his neighbors, and carried away a large quantity of all that “was easy for transportation. > \TATEMENT OF A REBEL Ex-WASHINGTO- widn.—A gentleman who reached this city on ‘Wednesday, from Marshal Bonifant’s farm, about 16 miles from Washington, in Montgom- ery county, says he saw Frank Spencer with the rebels there. Frank is the son of Geo. D. Spencer, formerly clerk of the Northern Mar- ket, and, with his father and two brothers, #am and Davis, ran away from Washington to join the rebels. Frank was one of the janior orators of the Dem Jack. Association, and ‘was always with that party in their treasona- ble conferences. He was aclerk in the store of S. Bacon & Co., and subsequently a clerk in the Interior Department. Frank was near Colesville when he met our informant, and was in command of the rebel battery. His guns were drawn by fine horses; but he says the guns were dragged into Mary- iasnd by hand, and their horses were stolen there. He was under Bradley T. Johnson, ‘who had 3,000 men en route to tear up the rail- Toad. He also said that General Early had §,000 men before Washington, and wouldremain there until Lee, with 30,000, could reach the defenses on the south side of the Potomac and co-operate with him. This communicative Tebel boasted that he destroyed the residence of Governor Bradford, near Baltimore. a ge ees RETUEN ov Tue Navy-Yarp Mrey—On ‘Tuesday atternoon, between eight and nine hundred of the Navy-Yard workmen, under orders of Com. Montgomery, at an hours’ no- tice, were called trom their shops, formed into companies, mustered into the military service, and placed under command of Admiral Golds- borough. They proceeded by boat to the Ar- senal, where arms were issued to them, and from thence by railread and land they went to Fort Lincoln, where they were placed in ser- ‘vice, being stationed in rifle-pits in front of the fort, where they remained until yesterday af- ternoon, when they marched back to the yard, and were mustered out of service. One com- pany was stationed at Benning’s Bridge. A number of naval officers—Capt Iver, Com. Da- venport, Assi-tant Surgeon Newcomer. and others—accompanied the expedition. A de- tachment of marines lett the yard at the same time for the front, and rendered vatuable ser- vice there. The bands atthe yard responded to the call very promptly, for which they de- serve much credit, and their conduct at the front was everything that could be wished. SEE STE MuUsTERED OUT.—The rebels having disap- peared from our front, most, if not all, of the companies temporarily mustered into service have been mustered out. On Wednesday the attaches of the Sixth Anditor’s Bureau (90 in number) organized with Hon. Green Adams as captain, chief clerk Sharretts as ist lieutenant, and Robert Widdecomb as 2d lieutenant, and were mustered for a period of time mot mentioned. They moved to Fort Ba- ker, and after one day's soldiering were re- called and mustered out. They marched down the avenue yesterday evening and made quite ®& soldierly appearance. The battalion of Union Leaguers were also Fecalled and mustered out yesterday. They ‘were drawn up in line on 9th street and Capt. J.E. Alien, on the part of the general com- manding, read to the battalion @ letter compli- Imentary to their promptitude, zeal and effi- ciency, and announcing that, under theexisting State of military affairs at the national metrop- Olis, they could, for the present, resume their Tespective avocations. > TaE SCHOLARSHIP IN CoLUMBIA COLLE! ‘The contestants for the scholarship of Colum- bia College, offered to the most meritorious pupil of the Public Schools of this city, were examined at Rittenhouse Academy on Wed- nesday, by the Trustees. They numbered 1,000, and were speedily equipped for service, under the direction of Captain L. IL. Moore and H. A. Duprey, of the Quartermaster’s department, and Lieut. E. Bail, 2d U.S. cavairv. The whole force is under command of Col. Blake. These companies have been drilled twice daily, and manifest great proficiency, many of the men having been formerly in military ser- vice. Detachments of them are now perform- ing guard duty at the depot at Giesboro’, and ‘Wiil not at present be disbanded, on account of the importance of that post. ——.——— WAS INGTON AND GEORGETOWN RAILROAD Company —The annual meeting of the stock- holders of this company ws held Weduesday for the election of directors, when the followin gentiemen were chosen: George S.
