LOCAL NEWS. __ AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. CANTERBURY HALt, despite the warm eve- nings, continnes to be crowded, there seeming to be ho Abatement in the desire to witness the performances of the St. George Sisters, who expose the mysteries of the spiritual perform. ances of the Davenport Boys. Johnny Red- den, too, the song and dance man, ts a feature. The local drama, ‘‘Bushwhackers of the Poto- mac," is still upon the boards. Sawrorp’s TRovre, at Odd Fellows’ Halls also receive a fair share of patronage from the tun loving public. Whether other places of amusemert were open or not Sandford would always receive large audiences, for his enter- tainments are alwaysof an amusing order, and such as will cause enjoyment tor the most moody. Pvutic SCHOOL = vrict.—Seeondary No.5 was examined yester- day. It is a large school, there being sixty scholars on the roils, of whom fifty-one were present. This school is under the charge of Miss L. B. Allen, and is well classified. The classes in reading displayed geod progress. and showed proper training in giving due emphasis. in geography the first class passed ® very creditable examination, somewhat better than that of thesecond classin geography. Inmen- tal and practical arithmetic, and the other studies, the scholars were all very good. Mr. ‘Tustm complimented school and teacher at the end the exercises ni Second District The Mate Grammar in charge of Mr. Thomas M. Wilson, was exam~- ined by Messrs. Wight, Rhees, and Hitz, of the Trustees, and Z. Richards, Esq., in the pres- ence of quite 2 number of the teachers of oth- erschools. The exercises occupied trom one to seven o'clock. The resuit of the examina- tion showed considerable improvement, and in some of the stndivs the examination could not be surpassed. The first class was excellent in spelling, Mental arithmetic, history and the governmental instructor, as was also the sec- ond and third classes in mental arithmetic. ‘The tbird class also passed good examinations ip gram mar, reading, spelling, and in geogra- —First Dis- pby the promptness and correstness of their answers surprised the visitors. The reading ‘was excellent, the boys paying special atten- tion to the punctnation, expression and pro- nunciation. The examination in the govern- mental instructor was conducted by Mr. Rich- ards, who expressed his gratification at the at- tainments of the boys and complimented them | highly, stating that some four years since he ; examined one of the best schools in Bostoa in this siudy, but they were far behind the class he had just ¢xamined. Like many schools we have visited this sea- son, the school was not full on examination day—a number of the scholars having been withdrawn durirg the pastfew months. At present there are but 3+scholars on the roll, ind all were present except one, who was in- jured by a fall on the fourth inst. The room was handsomely decorated and its Appearance as well as the neatness of the schol- | ars Was complimented by all. One or two pieces of music were sung by the | boys in good style, althongh it was apparent that they had not received thesame attention trom the music teacher that the female schools | have. Third District—The Male Intermediate | School, Miss Jane G. Moss, teacher, was ex- amined on Tuesday by Mr. J. Hitz. There | were 49 pupils present, and 7 are to be trans- terred. The third-class was tolerably good in reading and spelling, in dictation, geography ( and history was good, and in written arith- i as excellent. The second-class was pretty fair in reading, dictation and spelling; quite good in geography and history, and ex- cellent in men‘al and writien arithmetic. The first-class was excellent in spelling, geography, history, governmenta! instruction and written arithmetic, and dictation, and tolerably good | in reading. The school-room is on the first floor of the old Masonic Hall, and will soon be vacated for more desirable quarters. Miss Moss was educated in this city, and bas had ii years experience in her profession. and stands high as a teacher. The Female Intermediate, Miss Francis El- vans, teacher, (situated in @ pleasant room on FE street, near 6in east) was examined Wednes- day by Mr. Fergnson, assisted by teachers of other schools present at the examination. Of 59 pupils on the roll 55 were present; and of these only 7 were inmatrs of the school last year; it having lost durie.. the year by with- drawal, 30; by transfer, Js; and by suspension, 2. The first class was especially good in all branches except reading. The exercise of writing trom dictation showed that ia Gnbpecely 3h 4 chirography and punctuation the pupils had been carefully drilled. The examin ation of the first class in grammar, g-ography, mental and written aritpmetic was very searching, and the pupils answered aliquestionspromptly. Atthe close of the examination Mr. Ferguson compliment- ed the school and teacher, and said he would be obliged to transfer a large number. Miss Elyans does not allow her classes to answer in concert, @ practice which is deserv- edly ge@.ting into disuse amongst the best teachers. Secondary No. 5 (male and female), Mrs. Jordan, late Miss Emily E. Tucker, teacher, was examined by Mr. J. O. Wilson, of the First District. Mrs. Jordan has 60 pupils on the roll, and of this number 59 were present; the other, Valentine Connor, having broken his leg on July4th. The school was examined in the branches usually taught in a secondary school, but the teacher has had to contend with the disadvantage of difference in the ages and attainments ef her pupils, whereby she is not able to properly grade her schoo}. She has tour or five classes, nd these are subdivided in order tomeet the case of all her scholars. Indeed there are many whoshould be in pri- mary schools. Notwithstanding this great | drawback the examination was pronounced very good by Mr. Wilson, who made a short | address atthe close. During the past year 30 | have been transferred to schools of higher grade, and 16 will be transferred next year. The school was decorated with wreaths and tlowers, and here, as at other schools, the ex- ercises were enlivened by singing. Fourth District.—Secon (mate) No.6, Miss | Hattie J. Magee teacher, was examined Wed. -sday, by Mr Murtaghand Mr. J. E. Thomp- n, Of the Fourth District Grammar school. | ‘Miss Megee has had charge of this schoal only | some six menths, having been promoted to its | t-s«hership at the time Miss Reed was promo- ted to the charge of an intermediate school. Al- though Miss R. took with her the first class to | her new school, the school ia the hands of Miss Me gee hss mace sufficient progress to be able to trau:f-r scme eight pupils to the intermediate | schools. Though young, she seems to have a tact and aptitude for ber duties, and a capa- bili'y cf inspiring both the respect and regard of her pupiis, that fits her in a more than ordi- gary degree for success as ateacher. Of 16 pupils on her roll 44 were present. The classes in mental and written arithmetic were excel- lent, and almost equally good were those in | geography and dictation. Inspelling, reading, | numeration, &c., the school passed an excel- lent examination. The copy books attracted much attention, doth for the superior penman- ship displayed and from the neatness with | which the books werekept. There was a large attendance of parents and others interested in the school. The room was very tastefully decorated with evergreens, flags, flowers, Ac. and with the tidy bright looking scholars, presented a very attractive ap} nee. Otherwise, we can say mothing gocd of the room. It is one of the muserable shed affairs which go by the name ot schoolhouses, having a wretched low ceil- ing, Bo shade trees, and with a July sun pour- ing down upon it, the broiling the inmates catch is rather toosevere for christian children tostand. This is one of a row of such sheds diverted from cow-houses, apprrently, and “devoted to echool purposes.” ‘nen it is not very hot or very cold, and don’t rain or snow, or biow very hard, and the doors and windews can be kept wide open. we dare say such rooms can be ventilated. Miss Magee is an excellent teacher; and deserves a fitting school room, as do the other teachers in this row of sheds.
