It would be well to abolish this practice on examination days, and jet each pupil stand on his or her own merits. What we have here said is not intended ta apply solely . to Miss Ramsay's school, but to all schools where the practice obtains. Some specimens of the writing of the pupils here were shown, and it was evident the teacher had taken great pains with this important branch. We have seen none to surpass it in any schgol in the city. The exercises were interspersed with yocal and instrumental music, under thedi- rection of Prof. Daniel, and some of the most Ropelar song: as ‘The Rock Beside the Sea,” “The Flag of Thirty-four Stars,’ ‘The Ro- ver's Grave,” “Sad Autumn Winds,” &c., were sung in exquisite style. The popnlarsong, “When Johnny comes Marching Home,” was executed at the end of the exercises in a man- ner to delight and elicit the admiration of all. Compositions were read by Miss Mary Armi- steac, Miss Emma Williams, Misa Virginia Ruff, and Miss Eliza Simpson. The subject of the latter was “The Future,” @subject that probably every school boy or girl has wasted 2 good dealof paper and ink over; but Miss S treated the subject in an original style, and made a happy local application to the new school house. This young lady also read “Marco Bozarris” in a style that would do credit to a professional reader. Next year Miss Ramsay’s school will occupy the new building, and most of her first class will re- main with her for the sake of spending one year in the new building.
