The display of fancy and useful articles is superb indeed, and all are dispensed with as cheaply as possible, and with a grace for which the Island ladies are famous. PrsLic ScHOOL EXAMINATIONS.—The ex- amination of the public schools was continued esterday. ys Female Intermediate, First District, taught by Miss A. K, Lowe, is neld in a one-story and a half building, on the southetst corner of @ and fth streets. The school room isa large airy one, well lighted and ventilated, put is somewhat out of repair, and needs the atten- tion of the plasterer and white-washer. This achcol is one of the largest in the city, and has a good reputation, and there was consequently a large attendance of teachers of other schools and the relatives and friends of the pupils, ‘who manifested a deep inteyest in the exami- mation. Miss Lowe has her schoel well divi- ded into three classes, which were very thor- oughly examined by Messrs. Wilson and Brown in reading, writing, spell » composi tion, dictation, grammar, geography, history, ‘and mental and practical arithmetic, in all of which the scholars showed creditable progress. | ‘The class in geography, which was subjected to lengthy examination by Mr. Wilson, acquitted itmelf especially well. A large globe was placed immediately in front ef the scholars, upon which Mr. W. illustrated his questions. ‘The first and second classes in reading read to- gether. in order to save time. The reading was “very good, and the pronunciation ot words by the scholars usualiy correct. As some of the scholars of these classes took their seats after reading & verse each, the examincrs exproesed ibeir approbation by such remarks as “Good,” «Very good.’’ ‘The writing books of the scholars shew good improvement, and the compositions were also good. The answers to the questions proposed Al the writtenexaminations were opened and submitted to the scrutiny of those present. The questions were mainly correct, and were | ery neatly written. Prof. Daniel, who was present, has trained the pupils wellin vocal music, as shown by the exercises. “1 Love the Brooks, the Trees and Flowers,” as sung by Miss Bettie Dunn, ‘who was joined in the chorus by the whole school, is worthy of specias mention, ‘There are sixty scholars on the roils of this School, fifty-four of whom were present, the others being detained by sickness. There were eleven transfers to a higher school during the month of January, and ten for the present month ‘The school room was tastefully decorated ‘with the national flag and evergreens, and pre- sented a neat and pleasing appearance. Second Distriet—Secondary (female) School No. 1, held in the basemnet of the Assembly’s Charch, corner of Sth and I streets, was ex- amined yesterday atternoon by Mr. Miller, in the presence of (we are glad to note) quite a darge number of the parents and friends of the Scholars—a larger number than we have yet seen at apy of the Second District schoqJ exam- inations. Particular attention had been paid to the decoration of the school-rooni for the oc- casion; a ae flag being displayed behind the teacher's desk, with a number of smaller ones in different parts of the room. Conspicuous] displayed was the motto of the school, We live to learn,” with a large heart in evergreen banging below it, and numerous wreaths of the same on the wall. ‘his school numbers 53 lars, of whom 43 were present, and is in charge of Miss Jane Thomas. The examining tee pretty thoroughly examined the three asses, in orthography, punctuation, arithme- tic, geography. tables, &c., and right well did they acquit themselves, although there was Some little backwardness on the part of some of the scholars, and a few wrong answers were given. The recitation of the tables in concert was well done, as well as the ciphering and dictation exercises on the blackbourd; indeed some of the girls could not be surpassed on the blackboard. The geography class were, in addition to answering tke questions propounded, required small maps on the black-board and give the rejative position of places, resulting in the drawing Of several maps in admirable manner indeed. The arithmetic class also worked out their problems on the black-board, and the for- mation of the figures and neatness of the work was noticeable. The dictation exercises, the ciphering, and also the drawing of a globe on the beard by Miss Kate Grant surprised all present by their excellence. Close attention appears to haye been paid to Vocal music, apd during the exerciges the sang several pieces with fine effect. hool was formerly taught by Miss ton, who was obliged to relingnish it on ac- count of sickness, andin February last Miss Thomas took charge, bringing some of her ~cholgrs (from No.3.) Miss Thomas deserves ateat credit for the fine appearance of the schoo], which was highly complimented by Mr. Miller at the close of the exercises. TidrG District—Secondary School, No. 4, Miss Gatharine Morphy teacher, was exam. ined inthe morning by Mr. Hitz. Miss Mor- phy Rashad a number of years’ experience as a teacher @nd therefore it was to be expected shat her’examination would be a good one. ‘There.are 60 pupils on the roll, of whom 55 ‘Were present. iss Morphy has had a draw- back te contend with from the fact thatthe first class a her schoel this year was the first class in the Primary School Iast year, and therefore she deserves the more credit for the attainments ofher pupils. There are three schools in the Teom cccupied by Miss Morphy—the old mar- ‘ket house, corner 3d and A streets—and she has ‘*» @general supervision over the order and de- Pportment of the entire number, and therefore much attention which her immediate pupils should have received was necessarily divided #mong all present inthe room. The deport- ment of all the scholars throughout the entire day was excellent, and so far as the examina- tion was concerned, the reading, s elling and Mental arithmetic of the pupils ‘of both divi- ions of the second class is pronounced very good. The other classes, first, third and fourth, a'so Conducted themselves so well as to elicit ibe praise of the examiving trustee. The sub- » board of the third district have ever censid- ered Miss Morpby’s school one of the best in their charge, and ihe examimation of yesterday undoubtedly sustained them in that decision. Secondary No. 3, Miss Kate Sanderson, was examined in the afternoon by Mr. Hitz: Mr. Eerguson was presenta portion of the after- moon. The schoolroom is a pleasant one, at the corner of 2d and K streets, and yesterday ‘Was tastefully decorated with wreaths of flow- ers and evergreens. There are 53 pupils on the Toll, of whom 50 were present, the others being detained by sickness. The deportment of the pupils throughout the long examination was aye indeed, and the teacher evidently has d Control over those entrusted to her care. Where all classes did so well it is impossible 4° particolarize, In spelling and reading and in the rules of orthography; in punctuation und the use of capital letters, the: excelled in any secondary school in the Di trict; good as many of themare. Thompson teacher, was examined yesterday by the sub-board of the District, assisted by Mr. Z, Richards, Mr. T. M. Wilson, of the Second District Grammar School, and by other gentlemen present. The examination was held-in the large and airy school-room of the Female Grammar School of the District. Mr. Thompson’s high reputa- tion as a teacher, cayses his examinations, as ‘well as thoze of the female department of the fame school (Mrs, ‘idon’s), to be largely at- tended by visitors all parts of the cityyas was the case yesterday. Am those present were Mr.S. J. Thomson, of the First District Grammar School; Mr. Wilson, orthe Second do.; Mr. McCathran, of the Thiro do,, and many fealing eects of the female schools also, Mr, Z. Richards, Dr. Croggin. John ¥. Norrie, Wm. Thompson, Esq. Mr. 7, T. Cassell, Alderman Noyes, Mr. W.Galt, Mr pF, Pillinge, and many others interested in tig cause ot the prdlic schools. In ‘accordance with the oxpressed wish of the teacher, the examination was rigid, and admirably did the, beys stand the test. We have witnessed many sharp examinations, but none where the questioning was so vigilan” outside of the usual routine of questioning, and none where the answers were more salisfac- tory. This was well demonstrated in the tests in written and mental .arithmetic, analysis of language, geography, Constitution and ery. of the United States, written spelling (in whic the corps of examiners and visitors racked their brains to produce unfamiliar and oddly spelt words) and extemporized false syntax. Two of the scholars, F’. Franklin, (11 years,) and Wm. Hart, received special mention in the course of the exercises for their proficiency. The answers (written) given to the questions propounded at the written examination were exhibited yesterday. They were almost uni- formly correct, and told well for the style of penmanship tanght at this school. These boys will make g business men. This school, like others of the male grammar schools, has suffered much frem the number of older pupils taken away by their parents, in consequence of the abundant openings during the year for re- munerative employment for them. We think this is a wretchedly mistaken and short-sighted policy on the part of the parents, but they do Not seem to see it in that light. . There are 30 pupils on the roll at this school, of whom 29 were present terday, one being absent on account of sickness. At the close of the exercises, the school and teacher were very highly complimented by the examiners.
