Exartta,AMONs—The oral xaminatians of the pudlic 8920's were con- tinued yesteriay, as tollaws’ Male Intermediate, First District, tadght by Mrs. M. E. Rodiet, was subjected to a rigid ex- amriation by Messrs.Brownand Tastin, and the quertions propomnded were generally ane wered PpTomptiy and correctly, The classes iu reading, Writing and copherinn st show considerable pro- gress, indicanng that Mrs. Rodier's efforts to dustruc: ber scheiars in these three importaat branches bave uot been in vain. The examia- ation of the classes in geography, grammar, tnd bistory was also quite satisfactory. In mental arithmetic some of the scholars were a dittle backward, but this can perhaps be ex- Carga by the fact that many of the scholars in is class have been in the school only about six werks. having been transferred to it froma secondary school. The order was excellent There are 55 scholars upon the rolls 15 0f Whom were present yesterday, Eight have been traueferred to higher school: duriag the past year, and several of Mrs. R's bast and Most advanced scholars have been withdrawn within the past few weeks by their parents, to nett to business occupations. ‘he sch@ol-room, which is in the basemeat of Union Chapel, oa 20th street, near Penusyiva- nia avenue, was handsomely decorated with the American flag. The roomis a larg one, but the ceiling is entirefy too id'w, and the ven- tilation is very bad. In midsummer the heat is | almost inturerable, which renders it necessary to remove the window sashes in order toudimit fresh air. Second District—In consequence of the ab- sence frouythe city -of the Trustee appointed to examine Miss M. ¥, Davis’ school, (Primary nation was postponed until to-morrow moro ing. Miss Ellis’ school, (Primary No.4.) corner Of$th street snd Massachusetts avenue, wal, | we unders'si.d, not be publiciy ex:mined this | year, in consequence otf tne indispo-ition of the teacher. Third District —Secondary school No. 1, Mrs. @larke, teacher, was caréfaily examined by Dr. Walsh. There are 6!) pupils on the roll, of ‘whom 55 were present: three of the absentees being sick, and one unaccounted tor. The schuol was examined in spelling, reading, writing, mental and practical aritametic, geography, music, &c., snd all evinced a fair | degree Of scholarship, so far as they hid |, studied. Mrs. Clarke's classification bt the | Schoiats isirregular, but this Is owing to the fact that some of the ehildren are more ad- “yarced in rome studies than in others, and are conseqvently differently graded in different classes. Many pupils who are in. the first- class. in spelling are in the second-class in reading: avd others who are im the third-class ib geography are in the fourth-class of arith- metic. Notwithstanding the fact that this school is -classed as Secundary, Mrs. Clarke has no less than 30 pupils outof her 60 (une-half,) who Ought to bein Primary Schools. Of the latter ahe has admitted 27 the past year, and to 17 of these she bas been compeiled to teacn their let- ters. This of course has beeu a disadvantage notonly te the teacher but also to the pelts, ‘but considering all this disadvantage M. Clarke’s whole examination was a very eid one. Her pupils read bos, hig eatery with care, and bave a good know! for punctaation. in arithme:ic they are rather slow, but sare; and while ittook sometime to workout asum, mentally or practically, the answers were generally correct. Thisglowness is no fauit of ‘the teacher, forsome minds move more slug g@ishly than o:hers, and it Mrs. Clarke nad had 48 good material to operate upon as have mang: other teachers, her school wonld excel. In ail other studies the auswers were ready and prompt. Mrs. Ularke bas done much hard work the past year in order to bring her school up to the sta dard it has attained. and has had to contend with, not only the diffieuities above named. butulso with sickness, and therefore, considering ail, her eximination was a most creditable one. And now for the school room. It is a dis- grace to the district, «xcept so far as the situa. tion is concerned, which ts In a quie+t neighhor- bood, on 1!th street, south of Virginia avenue. | The buildiog is an old one, illy ventilated, badty ligbred, of low cei ing, and totally ana. dapred to school purposes ib summer itis too hot and in winter too cold, and if the health of the children fs 2 consideration should be va- cated atonce. Mrs. Clarke has 25 applicatious tor seats, and no weceucie® Secondary No. 2, Miss Lucy E. Moore teach- et, is in a rather pleasant brick building at the | corner of 3d streetand Pennsy!vania avenue. | ‘The room is well ventilated, and altogether suitable for a school room, except that beneath | isa tinners shop. This is an improvement, { however, on last year, when the blacksmith’s harnmer was heard contivaaliy underneath. Miss Moore bas sixty pupils on her roll, alt ot whom were present except threes, who were necessarily absent. She bas eight applicants, aid will transter fourteen toschools of a higher grade. ‘ The school was subjected to & thorough ex- fu insfon in ai] its branches by Mr. Hitz, and Miss Mocre, who ivan experieneed teacher, must bave been gratified with the expressions of approbation that fe-i from the lips of all who Dad the plessure of witnessing the examina- tion. The order was excellent. The copy books | ot the pupils were carefully examined, and | outof 2 nota blotor evidence of uncleanli-+ ness was discovered, but all was neatn<ss, ‘The chirovraphy was exceedingly good, all the | letters were well formed, and the copy was | followed as closely as pos-ible. In some of the books the orthography was, tosay the least, pecoliar, but tuis was no tauitof the teacher, jor sbe had evidently taken pains to instruet her pupué in refere to ‘his etudy. In spelling, the turd class was fair; the same class m die ation, was good; and alsoin addiUon tum+, and in mental aritametic. The reading of the second ciass was tolerable, the | spelling good, and in the principl-s of ortkog- | hy Very good; while in mental und written aribmetic Wis class can be pronounced excal- kent.
