Redmond teacher, ws mined by Mr. J. S. brown in the elementary stadi-s, b as epeiling, reading. ciphering, punctu- ation, notation, &c. At the commencement of the school year there were but few who conld Tread oer wrile, and the progress made is good. In punctuation these scholars showed po little proficiency for their age—they ranging from six to twelve years. The leading classes in reading ard spelling were highly compli- Mmepvted by the examiners. There are sixty- four scholars upon the rolls of this school, fif- ty-four of whom were present. Miss Red- «mond has good control, and the order and de- corom maintained during the examination shows that her pupils havea high regard tor ber. The examination of this school closed with the «Oaliathenics” exercise, (lately intro- duced,) and the evolutions through which the little f+llows passed were both healthful and amusing. Primary No. 2, (female) is held at the corner ot Nimeteen'h street and Pennsylvania avenue. ‘There are fitty-six scholars upon roll, all of ‘wrom were present but three; two being absent from sickness, and one from injuries received by being run over by a city railway car. Fif- ten pupils bave been transferred during the = year trom this school to higher schools. he school is tanght by Miss Emily Robinson, and the scholars were examined by Mr. J. 0. ‘Wulson, in dictation, reading, geography, men- tal arithmetic, &c. The various classes ac- quitted themselves satisfactorily indeed; and gave evidence of the faithfulness of their in- structress. During the intervals between the examination of the different classes the schol- ars sang in fine style, (withont leadership) “(ome take a Sail,” “Here we Stand,” and “Billy Boy.” Atthe begining of the year the scholars came into Miss Robinson's school in such large numbers that it was found necessary to divide it, aud now there are three schools in the same room, which renders it very difficult te maintain order when all three of the schools ae in ses-ion, and which tends to retard the progress of the scholars. The room is well adapted o school purposes, being well lighted and ventilated. There are, however, too many | purils for a single school room, and it should either be partilioned or there should be a awsrming Off to another hive of one or more schools. Second District.—Primary No. 1, tanght since October !ast by Miss H M. Morse—Miss McIn- town, who had previously charge of the school being then transferred to & secondary school— | ‘was examiuped by Mr Rhees. Tbeschool room 1s op the grourd floor of the Washington Mar- ket building, (corner of 5th street and Massa- cbuse'ts avenue,) in which building there are | four otber schools in rooms not large enough (ith perhaps one exception) tor the purpose. ‘This school (No.1) ts composed altogether of boys, the smalleet of whom are just commen- cing tc acquire knowledge; and 53 of the 60 on the roll were Unhema keine f four being ab- 4ent from sickness. There are five classes, the lowest being composed of almost entirely new scholars; and they were all critically examined by the examining trustee, showing considera- Die proficiency, the first class being so far ad- vanced that Mr. Rhees intormed them that the Trustees would be compelied to sever their connection with the teacher by transferring them to a secondary school. The boys were Temarkably well benaved, although yesterday such 8 crowd of boys were about the windows and doors of the room that except to a careful observer the good discipline of the school itself might not have been apparent. During the afe trpoon the boys sang several songs excel- lently; but the great feature was the gymnas- tic exercises, which performance surprised the visi'ors, ot whom quite a number were pres- ent, who heartily applauded it. Tne teacher, Miss Morse, seems to have full control of the scholars, and although she bas bed charge of the school but eight months, it gives evidence of ber qualifications for the position. Primary No.2, in the same building, was ex- @mined by Mr. Milier, in the presence of a large pomber of visitors. This school is in ebarge of Miss Maggie Fl-nner, a graduate of the Second District Grammar school, and numbers -ixty girls, of whom only two were absent. There sre now fourteen s plications tor admission. They wereall pretty noroughly examined, and gave evidence of imarked im- provement insome of the branches, especially in spelling and reading and writing dictation exercises they showed readiness. In tne vari- | ous studies the teacher ser ms to have paid par- ticular attention to having the scholars thor- cugbly onderstand what they have learned before being advanced. The discipline of the | school is very good and there appeared to be mene of that awkward constraint which is found in some schools. During the afternoon | not yet been provided with primary school several pieces were sung by the scholars in fine etyle eliciting the commendation of the trustee and the visitors among whom we no- diced several teachers of other schools. The school room was bandsomely decorated and the motto of the school, « Knowledge is our aim, was conspicaous on the walls. Miss Flenntr is a. radaae of Miss Boggs’ school, (Second District @rammar,) and the general gc. od bebavior of herecholars and the profi- cency displayed yesterday showed that the } trustees were notin error when they selected a Washing‘on girl as a teacher. Primary No. 3. tanght on the ground floor of the eld Medicai College, corner of 10th aad E | atreels, Was examined by Mr. Wight, This school is composed of small girls, all in the elementary branches, 55 bring on the rolls, of whom bo? four or five were absent, and in the examination, which was pretty tkoronghly | conducted, they acquitted themseives haod- somel), notwithstauding for the past few months the teacher has lost much time by sick- ness. The scholars recited the multiplication tabie and tables of weigh's and meusures in concert very correctly sod in some of the studies showed that their early training was thorough. Mr. Ferguson, the exam. ining trustee, expressed himerlf well pleased, and Alderman Golick, who was present said at ite cloee that Behad never experienced mere Pleasore, and it was evident from the Moe dis. cipline of the school, and the respect and love the pupils Lore the teacher, that no exertion bad been spared to bring the school up toa high standard. The singing here too, ws ex- ¢-Hent, and one of the most pleasing featuras of_the exercises was the singing of a solo — “The Vacant Chair.” by Miss Alma Nomoton. bib No 4, which is welltnaght by Wiss Eliza J. Wnentley, was examined by Mr Hitz. The eschool-room is the rear oasement of a cburch op Virginia avenne, between Sth and 6tb etreeta—dark. badly ventilated, and damp unless the weather is extraordinarily clear. This school also should be changed to A batter Trocm as dily as possible’ There are 57 pupils on the roli here, 5tot whom were pres- ent, and Miss Wheatly will be able to transfer ten to schools of a higher grade; and none from the primary schools will be better prepared to enter a secondary schoul than will tne pupils taught by Miss Wheatley The classes in dic- tation and arithmetic were examined while we ‘were present yesterday, and n-arly all evinced a good knowledge of what they had basen studving. In the diztation exercises the or- tbograpby and chirography was really sdmi- rable in children so voung. Of coarse, this expression will be understood to apply to the average, for there were some who, so far as spelling was concerned, would hardly equal a second class. But the general examination was good, and Miss Wheatley has reason to be proud of her scholars, and the favorahle ex- Precsions of ber trustee were well deservad. Primary No. 5 is taught by Miss Lizzie Allen, who was appointed a teacher in 1863. Her school numbers 56, all of whom were present. The Ist class in Orthography and tn ading was examined while Wwe were present, aud while we noticed some defects still the general exeminaticn of these classes was good, consid- ering that Mies Allen has had much to contend ‘with, from the fact thatthe pupils were young- er and less advanced when she took theschool, than the pupils of most schools of this grade. The answers to questionsin Orthography were generally given correctly, but not so quickly as in some other schools. On the whole how- ever, the examiner expressed himself pleased with the school. So far as discipline was con- cerned no exception could be taken. This school was examined by Mr. R. T. Mor- sell, Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Tustin, who was assigned to the school, not beine able to attend. The school room isina brick building on K street, near the Corral, is well ventilated and one of the most comforta- ble rooms— winter or summer—in the city. Fourth District—Primary No. 1, (female,) Fourth District, corner 6th and O streets, Isl- and, Miss Josephine A. Lee teacher, was ex- amined yesterday by Mr. Murtagh. Of the 61 Schoolars on the roll 56 were present. The average attendance through the year has been 54. Theroom, a light and cheerfal one, but not as perfectly ventilated as sirable for the heated term,’’ was decorai:! florally and otherwise with much taste, and the little girls dressed forthe most part in white, with mourn- ing sashes in memory of a Iate sister pupil, presented & very neat appeartnce. Miss Lae’s school, it will be remembered, passed an ex- cellent examination last year, and that of yes- terday was quite as much to her credit. ike her sister, Miss Mary Ann Lee, she is a good disciplinarian, and keeps the pupils well io hand. A very determined young lady is sh», too, that full justice shall be done to each and allof her classes in the way of examination; and thus itis that the examiner assigned toher school may count npon having a thorough day’s work of it, (as happened yesterday,) be- fore she lets him off. The classes in epelling and mental arithmetic did themselves special ereditat this school. Tne examination was concluded with appropriate remarks compli- mentary to the school, by Messrs. Murtagh and Ellis, of the Board of Trustees, and Mr. John E. Thompson, principal of tae Male Grammar school of the District. There are thirty-four applications for ad- mission at this school, and in this District there are 150 applicants: showing the necessity for more primary schools in the District. e@ are glad to see this school-room provided with the comfortable and convenient primary school desks, now used in the best schools of the country, aadtrust that they may be adopted in allourschools. Itis creditable to the people of the Seventh Ward that they evince their in- terest in the schools by being present at the ex- amination: The numerous attendance yes- terday of parents and others, must have been gratifying and encouraging to both teacher and pupils. Primary No.3, (mixed school, i.e. male and female,) [2th street, between D and E streets, Miss Alice E. Adams teacher, was examined yesterday by Mr. John E. Thompson, the ex- amining trustee, Mr. Holmead being ill. This school is kept in anew one-story building erected for the purpose, and though the ceiling is of low pitch, the ventilation is good from the number of doors and windows confronting, and the light is good for the same reason. Great and commendable pains hud been taken by teacher and pupils yesterday to cause the school room to have an attractive appearance, and the decorations, floral and otherwise, were very tasteful. A melodeon introduced into the Toom caused the musical exercises to go off with additional ettect. Sixty-two pupils are on the roll here of whom sixty were present yesterday. The school was organized about tbe first of December, and the majority of the pupils had never attended school before. Some sixty of them required teaching in the simplest rudiments. Under the circumstances not mach might Have been expected of the school, and it is therefore very much to the credit of Miss Adams that she has brought the school up to a degree of proficiency that elicited the warm approbation of the examiner—Mr. Thomp- son—a gentleman of large experience himself in teaching. The pupils evinced an aptness and spirit in answering that showed good training in that particular. The order was commendahly good. We noticed that this school reom has desks, and trust that the deficiency may soon be remedied. Here, too. parents and friends were present in numbers at the examination, which was concluded with remarks approba- tory of the school and teacher, by Mr. Thomp- son snd Mr, Chas, Wilson. Primary No. 4, (mixed,) I street, between 43; and 6th, Miss Van Horn, teacher, was ex- amined by Mr. Ellis. Miss Van Horn takes the place of Mies Hattie Magee, promoted to a higher school. Of60 pupilson the roll 37 were present, three being det ined at home by sick- ness. There are 24 applications for seats at this school. The school is kept in a one-story frame building, not badly adapted for its pur- pose as regards light and ventilation; but we sincerely hope at no distant day to see all these cow-house structures displaced by school buildings more creditable to the city. The neatly clad children and the pretty flowers adorning the room made it look, how- ever, at its best yesterday, and tor the time being one forgot what a shabby old stracture it was. Miss Van Horn, though comparatively mew to the school and a stranger to that section of the city, seems to have acquired the centi- dence and respectof the pupils; and the school, as far as we could judge, is making satisfac- factory progress. In figures, the multiplica- tion table for instance, Roman fignres, &c., &c, the pupils were quite perfect. Mr. Ellis, the examining Trastee, spoke of the examination as most satisfactory to him, and concluded the exercises with some judicious words of encour- agement to the scholars. The attendance of visitors here, too, was noticeably and com- mendably large. aes following schools are being examined to-day: First District.—Male Intermediate, Mrs. Ko- dier teacher; by Messrs. Brown and Tustin. Second District.—Primary No. 4, Miss M. Y. Davis teacher; by Mr Rhees. No. 5, Miss Ellis teacher; by Mr. Wight. Third Dis'rict.—Secondary No.1, Mrs. Clarke teacher; by Dr. Walsh.
