I fear it would he difficult to do this fully, as the inter- view on the occasion referred to extended over some time. But upon the only point on which there is any substantial difference between the two versions that have been given of thé in- terview, I will report. as nearly as possible for ‘me to do, the words that 1 understand passed between Mr. Gladstone and Garibaldi. Mr. Gladstone said, ‘If the same kind of demon- strations are repeated in the provinces that Dave taken piace in Loncon, they may damage the effect of your visit and lead to unpleasant complications.’ Garibaldi said, ‘Then I un- derstand that yon wish mes to leaye. Mr Giadetone said, ‘Yes.’ The General said, ‘Then | I give you my word, and I will go.” I said there wasa general impression abroad | that the request for him to leave camefromthe | Government, and that it was the popular belief that the ‘complications’ referred to were political. He said he knew that such was the belief that was generaily entertained. He thought it was correct that the Government did wish him to leave, and ‘hat as they (the Government) had treated | bim withso much kindness, he could not re- main to bea source of inconvenience. If L . have not reported the exact words that were used I am quite certainI have reported the sense. He smiled incredulously when I re- ferred to his health as the cause of his unex- pected departure, and said that although fa- tignued with the fashionable life he had lately | been leading, otherwise he was in excellent health—hed indeed never been better in his life. Knowing Mr. Gladstone to be a leading Member of the Government, he évidently thought the story about his health had been Originated to cover the other, and in his esti- mation stronger, reasons for his being requested toleave. He regarded the explanations made in Parliament as diplomatic.and more than once said if he could be relieved from his *pledge to go’ he would stop.” In other words, Garibaldi was politely shouldered out of England because his pres- ence there was an offence to Napoleon, Eng- Jand’s master.
