Bargis oF THE MARINE Coxrs.— Yesterday morning, at a few minutes past eight o'clock, Col. John Harris, Com- ™andan' of the Marine Corps, died at the head- quarters here of typhoid pneumonia, after an illness ct ten days. Col. Harris was in his 77th year, and bad been in the service a little Over fifty years, in that period being unem- ployed less than four years. He was born in Pennsylvania, and app inted from that State on the 13th of April, 1514, as a lieutenant; and on the 27th of January, 1537, he received the Sppointment of Major by brevet, for gallant gervices in the Florida war. He also served with distinction through the Mexican war. On the death of Gen. Henderson (January, 1459) he received his present commission. (ol. Harris was a fine officer, and was universally esteemed in the service andin the communities im which he has seryed,—New York, Phila- G@elphia, ard Norfolk—which stations he has commanded, as weil as here. ‘The funeral will take place from his late residence at the headquarters st 11 o’clock to- Inorrow, and the remzins will be placed in the ‘vault at Oak Hill, Georgetown. It provides that the dis- trict heretofore known as the district of George- town, situated partly in the District of Colum- bia, and partly in Maryland, be hereafter des- ignated as the district of Washington—and the city of Washington be a port ofentry, the gol- lector of customs to reside therein, and with the approbation of the Secretary of the Treas- ury,employ a deputy collector to reside in Georgetown, at a salary of $1,500 per annum.
