Leach, the Consul of the ited States at St. John’s, Newfoundiend, of | the passage of an act by the present General | Assembly ‘‘which,” as the Consul remarks, * “provides that hereafter all vessels entering | this port shall pay a tonnage fee of five cents per ton, in addition to the twen:y-four cents now charged for light dues, which, with the Ppllotage, will make the port charges amount to about thirty-eight to forty cen‘s per ton.” The following sections of the act are printed Sor general information : Council to direct a ation to the pur- of the said Company of the proceeds of any duty that may be upon coal imported into St. John’s. 16. Such rates shall be paid at the times aforesaid by the masters or owners of such vessels, and shall be collected and recov- ered in the same manner and by the like means as light dues are now collec’ and recovered im the said port: Provided that no vessels shall e compelled to pay water rate oftener than | once in one year, nor to a ter amount, whatever her tonnage may be, than twenty dollars. Section 1°.
