___LOCAL NEW AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT, Forp’s THEATER.—Mr. Forrest's lengthy but moet successful engagement at Ford's wiil terminate to-morrow night, when he will ap. Rear iu a favorite character and take a benefit. 'o-night and to-morrow night are therefore the last chances of bane he great tragedian, tor some time at least. The historical Shaks- ‘perian play of “Coriolanus,” is announced tor So-night, ce eorreee appearing as “Caius Ma- sius,”’ a character he has - formed in this city. never: Derbi bee GrovER’s THREATER.—The comedy of «Lon- don Atsurance™ is announced for to-night. + Dazzle” will be well represented by Mr. Wal- jack; “Charles Gourtley” by Mr. Davenport, and oledy, Gay Spanker” by Mrs. Farren, while such favorite actors as Ben Rogers, McDowall, Tarr, Mrs. Myroa, &c., will ably support the great combination. ‘London As- surance” is one of those glorious comedies which is always fresh and new, especially. ‘when played by such acturs as those named above. CaNTERUURY.—Poole’s prize drama, «The Mountain Outlaw,” ie just now a prominent teatvre here, and is performed well by Mrs. Frank Drew, Mr. beForrest, and others. But it is not the only attraction, for the singers, and dancers, and Ethiupiacs, Possess & mag- netic power, and draw hugely. It is necessary to go early to secure a good seat. Merrorouitan HALL.—If crowded houses nd hearty applause are evidences of an excel- dent entertainment, then assuredly Metropoli- tan Hall occupies a prominent position among concert halls. Nellie Taylor, Tom Vance, Joe Childs and others perform here. V aBieTies.—Notwithstanding the numbe: Attractive places of amusement now open, tm this city, the Varieties always to be well-filled with delighted @uditors, and this is owing to the fact that the performances are of a kind calculated to please the masses. Church opened their fair last night at the corner of 14th and @ streets, under most favorable auspices. Much enjoyment has been pecesiaed all visitors here, and we are assured the ladies having the fair in charge will make it fair yet heid. A PuBLic ScHoor Concert of vocal music ‘will be given to-night at the Smithsonian Hall, under the direction ot Prof. Daniel. This is one of the series of.concerts proposed to be given for the purpose of raising funds for the purchase of pianos for the schools. The inter- mediate school children are concerned in this One, and it bids fair to equal any concert yet given for this cause. Bari—The Island Social Club announce their third grand ball for to-night at Island Hall. It promises to be an enjoyable affair. superior to any ge UsiTEeD STATES, ON RELATION or Davi G. Day, v8. Joun P. Hi. ton— Petition Dismissed — Ona rule ata relation of David G. Day, betore the Supreme Court, D.C., served upon John P. Hilton, a justice of the peace, to show cause why he should not be removed from office on the charge of baying rented a certain house for bawdy purposes, the Court, after hearing all the evidence, decided to discharge the rude. ‘The following is the opinion of Chief sustice Cartter in the case: In the case of the relation against Hilton as v magistrate, the Court has come to a conclusion. After looking over the statute creating th- power in this Court to remove magistrates, in the light of ascertaining what character of offenses are brought within the jurisdiction of the Court, we have concluded that the statute empowers the Court to remove magistrates in the District for all_ offenses that render them unfit to hold the office of conservators of the ace. 1t is not restricted simply to mal- ‘easance or non-feasance in office, but it relates to their gene: fitness for the place. If this relation were sustajned by the undoubted proof that ought to be brought before the court exer- cising the power, we should not hesitate to exercise it here. But while the Court has before it evidence in this case such as it regrets to see, it is not satis- tied that Mr. Hilton designed to cultivate the violation of the law. That he knew that this ‘was 8 house of ill-fame there can be no ques- tion—that he procured it to be established is Another and a very different question. As far as his acts were committed to writing, he pro- wided against it; and under the explanation which Mr. Phillips gives in connection with the last lease, provided against it pa ly and understandingly. Still we cannot disguise from ourselves the belief that he would not have executed that second lease for the term of three years, with the money payable in advance, it there had not been an outstanding contro- ‘versy between him and his principal as to money. And if he did not propose to put an end to it as far as he could by the receipt of the money, still he has left around him in the course of this transaction evidences that he did not intend to patronize prostitution. As far @s the equitable relations of these parties are concerned with them in this process, the Court has nothing todo. There is a process pending which may adjust the whole of that matter, @nd will, when it comes before the Court for consideration. So with the criminal prosecu- tion. Under all the circumstances, we have con- eluded that the proof is not of that conciusive @nd clear character that onght to put a man’s Feputation in jeopardy and involve him in the @isgrace that necessarily would follow his removal from office; and we have therefore paaimously conciuded to dismiss the rela- on. —— A MEETING that was quite interesting to those connected with the Sabbath Schools of the city was held at the rooms of the Young Mens’ Ohbristian Association, on 7th street, Monday afternoon. The report of the committee of ar- rangements for the coming anniversary cele- bratiou was presented and approved. It re- commends that all the schools of the city, with the exception of thoee of the Island and Nav: ‘Yard, assemble in Lafayette Square at9 o’clocl on the morning of the 23d of this month, with their bands of music and their gay banners, and march through some of the principal streets to three of the largest churches of the city to hear the addresses, and sing their beau- iiful songs. The whole city to be divided into fiye sections. The first, second and third di- visions to embrace the body of the city, and the tourth and fifth the Island and Navy Yard respectively. 5 ‘he schools of the first division are those of the First and part of the Second Ward, and are to go from Lafayette Square to Wesley Chapel, corner Fifth and F streets. Those of second divi-ion, embracing part of the Second and part of the Third Ward schools, sre to leave the line of procesgion at the Fourta Pres- byterian Obour Ninth street; and the re- maincer, embracing the Fourth and Fifth ‘Wards, are to fll into Dr. Gurley’s New York Avenve Presbyterian Church. The Island and Navy Yard schools, as they are some distance off, are to have their pis 80 arranged that they will not be compelled to march up in the heat and dust of the city, but will probably hold their interesting exercises in the Smith- sopian Insti ntion. This will make the distance to be traveled by the “little ones” about equal for all, and pre- vent the probability of any of them being tired out or lost, a= is apt to occur in a general pro- cession through the city, and will satisfy many who are in favor of a display of ths whele strength of the schools, Eloquent speakers will be engaged, and the different schools will practice the beautiful hymns selected by the committee, next Sab- bath. The exercises at the churches will oc- cupy not more than one hour, and the schools will separate for their homes, sume of them in- tending to get up some refreshmenis at their schools tor the children. A grand time is ex- pected and the children are greatly excited in Anticipation, and as between 4 and 5,000 are expected to turn out we predict a display that for refreshing beauty will long be reraem- bered. poe nee eee ane May Batt.—Prof. Marini’s May ball, held last Tuesday evening at Odd Fellows’ Hall, was a delightful affair, bringing together a Jarge assem blage of the pupils and their friends. The ceromonies of the coronation of the May Queen, with the speeches and responses by the maids of honor, were very pleasing and inter- esting. The Queen was Miss Annie Morgan; Goddess of Liberty, Mise Fannie Stoops; First Maids ot Honor, Misses Bertie Seymour and Lizzie Knowles; Second Maids of Honor, Misses Sallie Duncan and Annie Copeland; Grown Bearer, Miss Hattie Keene. A number of fancy dances were performed in admirable style by the pupils; after which the pred aes thrown open for the visitors for dancing ¢ urposes. 5 Professor Marini is a highly teacher, as is shown in the great p! his pupils. —_—se More SALES OF Reat Estats.—James C. Testimonials. From the Rev. Fred. 8. Jewell, Professor ef State Normal School, Albany, N. Y~ This may eertify that I nave been, since 1814, subject to violent poredien attacks of catarrh, marked by a highly inflamed condition of the lining membranes of the cavities of the head, producing a most distressing species of head- ache tor days ata time, wholly incapacitating me from business, and during the paroxysms confining me tothe bed. 1nsome instances the inflammation has extended to the teeth, occa- sioning toothache ; to the threat, producing hoarseness and partial loss of voice ; and and twice it has so effected the left eye as to con- fine me for a month or more to adarkened room. These attacks have been accompanied by strong febrile symptoms; by stoppage of the head, and, in the first stages, by watery discharges from the nose, subsequently becoming acrid and yellow, and towards the close of the attack becoming bloody and purulent. I have tried medicines of almost every kind; external ap- plications to the head, such as camphor, gin- ger, hot bandages, and fomentations of hot vinegar; snuffs of some half a dozen kinds, and other catarrhal preparations, together with in- ternal remedies, such as alteratives, cathartics andemetics. These have produced no change in the occurrence or character of the disease, and, in most cases, with little or no temporary relief. I had come, at length, to believe the disease to be practically beyond either cure or material alleviation. Unger these circumstances I was led_some five months ago, to make atrial of Dr. Light- hill’s treatment. His method at once approved itselfto my judgment, as simple, philosophi- cal, and tikely to be effective. Notwithstand- ing the disadvantages under which he labored, in dealing with a disease of such long stand. ing, aggravated by nervous debility and dys- pepsia, and constantly induced by the acci- dents of my prosecsional labor, I found the treatment reaching the disease as it had never been reached before, and producing such a modification and alleviation of its character, as I had supposed impossine. I chronicle the results thus. AlthouzhI have been situated several times, so that I should formerly have believed a severe attack of my catarrh inevita- ble, I have escaped thus far: the symptoms of threatened attack have been very light, and have yielded to the remedies employed by Dr Lighthill, without need of recourse to the old hot fermentations, or emetics; and the dischar- ges trom the head have resumed the origiial and natural condition. [I count upona com- plete cure. That I have been able, however, to obtain so material a relief isto me a cause ot gratitude. In that alone, lam repaid for whatever the treatment may have cost me. I make this statement unsolicited, as ameans of acknowledging my obligations to Dr. Light- hili’s method of treating catarrh, and witha view to aid any who may have suffered from that disease, in forming @ just opinion ot its merits, and its probable utility in their own case. FREDK. S. Jewett, Prof. State Normal School. Albany, N. ¥., March 14, 1964. Catarrh Cured. From Ree. R. P. Kassel, Lynn, Mags. I have been much troubled with Catarrh of the worst type for some twenty years. It gradually grew worse, producing cough and hoarseness, destroying the sense of smell, and breaking down my general health to such a degree as to compel me to resign my pastorate, and suspend public speaking. I made diligent use of the useful remedies, such as snuffs of different kinds, nitrate of silver, tar water, olive tar, and inhalations, but without any salutary effects. Last sum- mer I heard of Dr. Lighthill's successful mode of treating catarrh, visited him, and put my- self under his treatment. I began immediate- ly to improve, and this improvement has gone on to the present time. My catarrh has gradu- ally melted away, my cough has disappeared, my voice has become natural, and I am once more able to preach the blessed Gospel. Let me advise all troubled with catarrhal difficul- ties to apply to Dr. Lighthill. P. R. Russg1t, Lynn, Mass., Feb. 1, 1962. my 5-eolw BALLS, PABTIES, &c.
