LOCAL NEWS. __| AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Grover’s THEATER.—The remarks mide last night by a party leaving Grover’s Thgater, that ro manager or company could desire better houses than euch as have attended the opera throughout the entire season, was most trae; and he might with justice have added that no | patrons of amusements could baye desired better entertainments than such as have been siven here. To-night, Flotow’s opera of “ siee sil be performed for the last time. ‘oRD's THEATER.—Mr. John McCulloch, a great favorite here, and one of the most de- serving of actors, will to-night take a benefit at Ford ‘ey and will appear as “Charles Anster: comb,” in the grand old comedy (now seldom het Fees 5 Fd we and Wife, or More Seats . 4S) > will also be recited. Pease eer CanTErBURY.—The pantomime, “The House | ‘that Jack Built,” which is now bei r= formed st Canterbury Hall, abounds inthe tunniest of tricks, in startling transformations, and interesting tableaux, and is withal well worth seeing; as is indeed the balance of the bill nigh‘ly performed at this popular resort. ‘VaRixtIEs.—There will be a fine perform- ance at this resort to-night. Song, dance, pan- tomime, ballets, &c., are part of the bill, and a number of new féatures will be introduced. A. Locke, with its superb shawl (a prize for some fortunate somebody) and beautiful paintings surrounded by the stars and stripes. And the room is filled with such attractions. CoNCcERT.—A -vocal and instrumental con- cert will be given at the Sixth street (Island) Presbyterian Charch fonight, for the benefit of the Island Baptist school. eget MERZTING OF THE JOURNEYMEN CORDWAIN- ERS.—Pursuant to an announcement in the Star, the Journeymen Cordwainers’ Associa. tion of Washin, held a meeting last night at Temperance Hall, which was attended by quite a number of the craft. Mr, Jonathan Forrest, the president of the asso@ation, announced that the association had been called together for the pu! of making arrangements to procure an advance on the rates now paid, bales § securing anequivalent for the labor formed. Mr. Patric! desired to know it the members were willing to strike tor higher wages; and if soit was necessary to appoint & committee whose duty it should be to arrange the price list. r. Madison Gasaway moved the appoint. ment of a committee to draftascale of prices. The motion was agreed to, and the Ohair ap- pointed Messrs. Christopher Spence, Madison Gasaway, Patrick ‘Berry, John Roberts and John Owens. The committee retired to an ante-room, and upon their return reported the following, which dces not include the extras, but is an advance of abc ut twenty per cent. upon former rates : Single Scotch bct:om boots. $3 75 Single sole cavalry boots, s' 4 375 Single sole calfskin boois, stitched. 3 50 Footed calfskin boots, bottoms stitc! 350 Patent leather boots ....-..sse.. 400 Calfskin shoes and guiters, stitches 225 Light fudged boots ....... 300 Shoes and gaiters, fadged oe 195 Light pegged bocts . 1 6 Light pegged shoes. 125 Light pegged gaiters ee 137 The scale was taken up item by item, and adopted unanimonsly with the exception of article three, upon which there was one dis- senting voice, the voter alleging that the price named was not & sufficient advance on that kind of work. - Mr. T. C. Owens moved that a committee be appointed to wait on the employers and inform them of the increase, and learn whether they would comply with the demand. The Chair appointed the tollowing to consti. tute the committee: Messrs. E. A. Stone, Chris- topher Spence, Patrick Berry, John Lacey, and Mathias Flemming. An inquiry having been made as ta when the action of the society should go into force, Mr. Gasaway replied that time should be allowed the empl.yers to make up their mihas to give the advance, and suggested Saturday as the day upon which the strike should take place, if the demand was not complied with. Mr. John Crowley said whey should stand up to what they had done, and moved that the strike begin immediately, and that no member go to work until he received the required advance. This motion was agreed to; and the committee was instructed to call upon the employers early this morning, anc to report this evening, to which time the society adjourned. {Vote—It is understood that this strike will only affect some seven or eight shops of the city, as the others are designated as ‘scab shops” by the association, the proprietors of which have not been paying the former prices demanded by the soclety.— Reporter.) pepe airtees Fornv Deap.—A Distressing Case.—Yester- day,a woman named Ann Kahle, was found dead in & house on 26th street, between E and F. She was addicted to intemperance, and on that account, itis said. her husband left her about five weeks ago;since which time she has been drinking cons‘antly, and a person living ™m the house thinks she has not eaten one meal in two weeks. Munday night, about 9 o'clock, she was Complaining of great pain inwardly, and remarked if sbe was not felieved she wonld not live one day. She went to bed with her ir'fant, and about 3o’clock yesterday morn- ing one of her children went up to another room and asked 4 lady to come to the infant, which was cry’ room, found the deceased lying ona blanket on the floor, and her infant beside her erying. She took hold of the deceased and told her to turn over and suckle the child, but she not ans wer- ing nor moving, the lady discovered she was dead. She was apparently in comfortable cir- cumstances, but had been living on charity sinee Rer husband left her. She leaves three very interesting children, one about eix years, another about four years, and the third about six months old. The police being informed, notified the coroner, but it was deemed un- necessary to hold an inyuest. The body was inken in charge by the neighbors, who appeared to be much interested in the matter; and the children als@ are cared for. bo A THe Orera or MABTHA, which ts annouaced tor its last perfoér:nauce this evening, will at- tract one of the largest and finest audiences of the season. It has been the subject of pub- lic commendation since its last excellent-pro- duction at Grover’s, and we are told that the requests from various sources for its repeti- tion have been almositinnumerable. The saie of seats for this opera commenced on Monday and has been going on rapidly ever since. We saw the reserve sheet last evening, and from its Appearance ivel safe in asserting that to- night's bouse will be the largest of the season. The manager has made arrangements for making this another one of those elegant full dress and (Wilette occasions Which have been so brilliantly successful before. It is expected that the audience to-night will form one vast boquet of beauty and fashion. The hand- -omest programme of the seasen is to b2 issued to-night, being a beautifally illuminated and «elegantly perfumed notion.
