Letournan secratary. | €58T5. Ferguson snd Dashiell, of thé com. | ithe to waft upon the gentlemen with whom the matier of wages at the Treasury was left by. Secretary Chase, reported that they had had an interview with Mr. Mullett, of the Treasary, rent in nothing more thag had before been repo: r. Ucllison, of the Arsenal, reported that he called on Capt. Benton, but aad an interview, and would retain the certificates given him antil another opportunity for an interview showid offer. Mr. Hermon, from the Navy Yard, reported that they were like the man who had something in_bis throat, he could neither get it up ordown. ‘The co:nmityee waited on the Commandant, | and wet ¢ led very kindly, and he said he | wong examine the subject. A commission was appointed by the author- | ities to. ascertain what wages were given by pilivate employers. ‘(Ourcominf:tee had reported such as gave and would give #3 per day, but tne commission said they found none that were xiving more than £2.50 among carpenters, and onl nse, & cabinet maker, who was giving $3. hen the committee again waited on the | Commandant he treated them as kindly as ever, and remarked that the cabinet makers were entitled to #5, and aa soon as private employers of their branch were giving the increase they would receive it also. All the reports were accepted. A motion was made to go into a permanent organisation. The mover scgeed that without Organization it was impossible to get the co- Ekg of private woramen. Mr. Reed said if the meeting intended an or- ganization of Government workmen it was proper enough; but if to organize they intend- ed to obtain the co-operation of private work- men, let them speak ont and say what they | design to do. f ‘The gentleman who made the motion re- marked that he was @ private workman. Another rose and remarked that he was from | a private shop, and was willing not to lift the 1 baichet again unles@ he got $3 per day. The question being taken, the motion was | carried almost unanimously. Mr. Starx, by consent, said he was taken by surprise. The movement was unexpected. Tie idea of an orgapization of carpenters and cabinet makers was entirely new to him; and he, as & cabinet-maker, did not know how to unite with carpenters in an organization. Mr. Letouruan argued for co-operation of mechanics. If tae journeymen were co-op- erarors there would be no necessity to demand | waees. At no time would mechanics obtain the wn until they learn to value themselves, and reepect themcelves. An association of me- chunics, irrespective of branches, is needed. Mr. L. was for a mechanic's union, not es. pecially to advance es SO cents, but for the gereral advantage that would result from it. | Mr. Cole thought the remark about self-re- spect might be apphed to him. But be really cught ag mach of himself as A. Lincoln did | ot himself. Mr. Cole was in favor of co-oper- ation. Alter the first battle of Bull Run the Peeples of the North said “sit is a good thing, it | will cause & rally.” We are like the army thr; we have been outflanked on every hand, and we mustrally. The mectanic 1s the very life of the nation, and the reason they think so little of themselves is the lack of harmonious aud ouited action on their part: and the neces- sity being so Apparent, he wondered that one i vote against Sretuesnen could be found. This ! is tbe very time and p!ace to organize. In this : metropolis, surrounded by mopuments of me chanical skill, let us organize now, and next | {ail vote for men of true principles, the salva- tion of the country, aud the elevation of me- che nie Mr. Cole spoke of the low estima‘e placed ' upon the intellectual capacities of mechanics as erroneous, and related an anecdote for illus. tration: A phrenologicsl professor proposed to assign youths to the callings in which they would be most successful. A nomber called upon him, and those who possessed the best developments of sirong and even minds he recommended to be mecmanics, mariners and thercnants. But one came whose developments were uncertain, pot much above idiocy. The | protessorexamined him over and over again, and at last in despair shook his head aud sugr gested, «1 guess you had betier adoptsom profession!” Laughter.) 4 Mr. S:ark rephed that he was pleased with ; the idea that they haa lost sight of 4 strike, when they moved in the organization. [He was Bot opposed to it, but feared no good would come Out of it. Let us settle the first ohject— the advance of wages—and then talk of organ- izntion. Mr. Hillyard said the first object of our com. ing together was & strong reason for early organization. As has been said, “we are out. flanked” for want of this very organization. The plumbers and gas-fluers this very diy received an advance, apon their demand for it. We, without concert, have asked in vain.” Let the organization be permanent, so that when we ask pay we may get it. The combination of three Jending men ts against us. Let us organ- ize by the Ist cf May, and be able to demand and obtain our pay. Mr. Stark denied that they had been ont. fianked. Secretary Ohase had said what he | wanted done and what he will do, aud has | he ver retracted what he said. A gentleman remarked that the organization would be effected without any discourlesy to the Secretary of the Treasury. Menure present | representing the public and privateshops. An { undercurrent is working against the interest of | t both. The Secretary is bound bya law kuovn | as the Grimes bill, which obliges him to be | gzviced in the maiter of wages by the private shops. Without organization the co-operation f he private shops cin never be ob!ained. 's gentleman from a private shop stated that | be iearned from his boss thet the public and | private bosses are organi now. If this be | *o, there is good reason a an ofgsnization ot journeymen. Mr. Harmon said of the Grimes bill that the author of it assured those who waited on him thatit did not design that the privaie shops here should govern prices in public works. ; The iarge shops of the vorthern cities should ' govern the mechanics of the country. Inorder | to succeed the outside « »kmen must be sus- tained. Mr. H. argued fo: organization—if not @ union of trades separate but harmonious or- lal genizations of trades. : Mr. Siark.—There is a disposition to urge & demand. { Cries.—“ Yes ” « demand f? «demand !") { Mr. Stark declared he wits opposed to it, and | though aloue he would vote against orgauiza- | tion. The question, on & motion to &ppoints com- mrttee to draft rales for the organization, was put and carried; Mr. Stark voting against it. The committe consists of Messrs Harmon, | . Dasheills, Coles, Magaw, and Sweeney, of { public and private shops. i Mr. Harmon mentioned that several gentle. men were preseut who in private shops get | #9 and $3.25. Mr. Coles stated that ashort time agoan iron-worker atthe Navy Yard asked an ad- vauce of fifty cents on his pay. His employer | oftered twenty-five cents. Fred Pa ewell, Profe: mer of State Normal |, Albany, N. This may certify viet 1h have been, since 1844, subject to violent porrodical Qttacks of catarrh, marked by 8 highly infiamed condition of the | lining membranes of the cavities of the head, producing & moet distressing species of head- | ache for days at a time, wholly incapacitating me from business, and during the pa ms | confining me to the bed. In some instances the | inflammation has extended to the teeth, occa- sioning toothache ; to the threst, producing hoarseness and partial Joss of voice; and and twice it has so affected the left eye as to con- fine me for a month or more to adarkened room. Theee attacks have been accompanied by stro! febrile symptoms; by stoppage of the he: and, in the firct stages, by watery. discharges from the nose, subsequently becoming acrid and yellow, and towards the close of theattack becoming bloody and purulent. 1 have tried mediciues of almost eyery kind; external ap- plications to the head, such as camphor, gin- ger, hot bandages, aud fomentations of hot vineger; enuffs of some half a dozen kinds, and otber catarrhal pr ‘with in- ternal remedies, such as alteratives, cathartics andemetics. Theee have produced no change in the occorrence or character of the disease, and, in most cases, with little or no temporary relief. I had come, at length, to believe’ the disease to be practically beyond either cure or material alleviation. Under tbese circumstances I was led some, five months ago, to make atrial of Dr. Light- hill’s treatment. His method at onceapproved iteelfto my Tpiement ee simple, losophi- cal, and likely to be effective. I chronicle the results thus. Although I bave been situated several times, so that I should formerly have believed a severe attack of my catarrh inevita- | ble, I have escaped thus far; the symptoms of threatened attack have been very light, and have vielded to the remedies employed by Ur. Lighthill, without need of recourse to the old hot fermentations, or emetics; and the dischar- ges from the head Dave resumed the original and natural condition. I count upona com- plete cure. ThatI have been able, however, to obtain so material a relief istome & cause of gratitude. In that alone, lam repaid for whatever the treatment may have cost me. I make this statement unsolicited, as a means of acknowledging my obligations to Dr. Light- bill's method of treating catarrh, and with view to aid any who may have suffered from that disease, in forming & justopinion of its merits, and ita probable atility in their own case. I began immediate- ly to fmprove, and this improvement has gone on to the present time. My catarrh has gradu. ally melted away, my cough has disappeared, my voice has become natural, and Lam once more able to preach the blessed Gospel.
