Tae EviisTMeNT Fusp BALt.—The ball at the Patent Office hall last night in aid of the © listment Fund was perhaps the greatest success In the ball line eyer known in this city, both in the numbers in attendance and in the amount of enjoyment experienced by all present. The hall in itself wasa sight worthy of s visit, Of vast and handsome proportions, floored with princely marble and draped and decorated after a style that delighted the artis. tic as well as the common eye it was the most maguificent ball room imaginable. It may Teadiiy be guessed that an ordinary sized ball company would be completely lost in this im- mense hall, and in fact that nothing short of the immense assemblage present last night would have served to give animation to the scene and a sense of fitness to the room as a ball room. in such an immense assemblage it would be impossible to imdividualize names without risk of important omissions, and therefore we Must content ourselves by speaking of the g@athering in the aggregate as one of the most brilliant and respectable (for by order of the managrrs every improper person in seeking Admission was turned away at the door) ever assembied in Washington. Mayor Wallach and most of our loading citi- gens, tog:ther with very many strangers of ote Were present, and the occasion bronghtout an unasuaily good representation of the beauty of the National Metropolis. Effective music was another essential in so vast a 100m and this was amply furnished by two superb bands—ihe Marine Band (repre- sented in cotillion and heavy instruments) and the 17th Infantr® brass band, lead by Poppen- burg. which came in superbly for the prom- enades. At 12 o'clock the scene in the hall, as viewed from & commanding position, was certainly the most brilliant and inspiriting we hayeever seen in a ballroom, far exceeding in general effect that at any one of the various inaugura- tion balls. It was nearly five o’clock in the morning be- tore the good old Virginia reel, endmg the pro- gramme had been duly honored, and ayen then many of the young folks left the scene ot so much innocent pleasure with manifest regret. The ball must certainly have netted a hand- some sura to the enlistment fand, as large num- bers of tickets were purchased “for the good of the cause,’ by those not in attendance at the ball. In addition to the credit due to the pnblic- #pirited citizens concerned In the management of the ball, much credit is due to Capt. Scheetz, ‘who geve his invaluable aid with characteris- tic promptmess throughout the progress of the enterprise.
