Cae Ey Orenine or Tax Newssorxe’ Home.—Last evening, the Newsboys’ Home, in Armory Square lot, which has been in course of erec- tion for some time, was formally opened. The Home iss frame structure, two stories 1n height, with a depth of 75 feet and a widith of 2 teet. To the left as we enter is tae bath reom, supplied with hot and cold water bath tubs; and aleo sink, wash-basins, towels, look- ing-glasses, brushes, combs, &c. To this room the newsboy, on entering, is introduced, and undergoes 8 process of w! ablution that makes @ new newaboy of him. To the right of the entrance, and of the main Office, is the office of the matron, Mrs. Mary Flagg, which also contains the « Newsboy’s Bank, in the shape of a table perforated with ‘Apertures to the numberof sixty, each aperture letting mto @ correspondingly numbered com- partmentin the drawer tothetable. Oncoming 1B Gt night the newsboy can in his com- partment such of his ashe has no im- Mediate occasion to, use, Teceive interest on his. it at the rate of five per cent. per year, y ab! “oe | The “bank” is the gift of rs. Hon. Sam’l Hooper, of Mass. Passing on, we come to the boys’ readi room, the walls of which are ornamented wi pictures, and which has also a good-toned Mmelodeon, the gift of Miss Alice Hooper. The “lockers” under the benches that line the walls, are pumbered and furnished with lock and key, serving as receptacles for papers or such articles as newsboys may desire to store in- safety. ‘The newsboys’ dining-room, which has tables to accommodate sixty or more boas comes next, and this room is surroun: by closets, pantries, wash-room, laundry, &c.;anda dumb waiter communicates with the kitchen below & convenient room, having a fine cooking range, boilers, &c. Coal bins, closets, sinks, aud other conveniences, find a place in the basement. Mounting to the dormitory, we finda spacious room, well lighted, well warmed, and with that desideratom ior 4 sieoping apartniont, good ventilation. This room accommedates fity neat comfortable cot beds; resting places that must seem almost beatitic to the little fel- lows after their heretofore sleeping experiences in dry goods boxes, on market stalls, &c. The boys—such of them as are able to pay anything—are to pay 10 cents per night fi lodging and 15 cents for meals, two of whic! will be farrished each day—breakfasi about 7 o'clock, after the early sale of morning papers; and dinner between 5 and6 ». m., between the sales of the city afternoon papers and the New York pupere corning in by the evening train. The Home, which was erected under the supervision of Dr. D. W. Bliss, (surgeon in churge of Armory Square Hospital.) chairman ot the building committee, shows in its various depariments that close attention has been given in its construction to the welfare of the ys, and, at the same time. to the question as well of the economical and judicious management of the concern. It will be in charge of the matron, aided by twoservants; and a police- mae will be stationed at the Home during the night. ‘Yesterday afternoon, the boys, to thenumber oi a dozen or so, were treated to an opening dinner by their kind friends; a) jater in the evening there were some interesting exercises at the Home. At eight o’clock, Prof. Henry called the meeting togeiner in the reading-room. Quite &@ number of the patrons ot the newsboys were present, and fifteen or twenty of the boys were there seated on their benches. Midway of the Tow, sitting bolt erect, and with in air of severe gravity, as if the responsibility of sus- taining the dignity of the profession rested upon his shoulders, was Mr. Aleck Dougherty. ‘verybody knows Dougherty. He is a char- acter amongst the boys. He wears his hair short, and sports a coat of military cut, with immensely long sleeves, which keep his hanas ‘warm in cold weather, and when the air is balmy, heturns them up outot the way in @ gracetul kink, quite indescribable. Dr. Channing opened the exercises with prayer, invoking the Divine blessing upon the ome” enterprise. The hpys dropped their hesds in their hands with a Geyoutness a little teo good to last; and presently one little scamp, peeping at his fellows through his fingers, overcome by the oddity of the situation, gave a perceptible “snicker,” which proved ifecti- ous toall the party save Dougherty, who en- deavorcd by frowns and becks to make them sensible ofthe impropriety of their conduct. Not succeeding, he gave a sharp dig with his elbow in the ribs of his left hand neighbor, and admonished one to bis right by a pull at his back hair, that reduced them hoth to tearful solemnity. And the moment the prayer was throagh, Dougherty, to put a stopper then and there on such practices, cnlied out qnite andi- bly to his omrades: “ess lemme catch yon larfin in prayer-time agin, and Il punch yer heads fer ye, see if I don’t!’ After which there was no levity. Various reports were read and accepted, showing the satigfaciory Munner 1a which the trust had deen administered by those concerned in the institution. Up to March ist the receipts had been $1,792 27, expenditures 4,059 90 leay- ing a surplus of $731 57 in the hands of the tre urer. This surplus has however -ince hausted; aiid some $5) was last night ibuted by thoce present in the way of an- ual dues ($2) for membership, &c. In the reports it was stuted that the benefits ot the Honie would not be confined to news- ays; that hootebincks @nd other uncared tor children my enjoy is privileges. On mction of H. M. Stade, Esq., Dr. Bliss constitn‘ed an honorary member of the cys’ Home, in recognition ot his sere some remarks congratu- upou bs the successfal re- sugzested that the the history of the secretary should tale news- boys: their experience2,&.. Tie examples of Gen. Banks, Theodore Parker, Abraham Lia- colu and others who bave risen from an bum. ble position were referred to as worthy of emulation. Dr. Channing conclnded with some good ad- vice to the boys, recommendiig them ty form an association Seoeg rere re making re- gulations io govern themselves by. Mr. Slade here caused the boys to sing « My seul is marching along,” accompanying them on the melodeon. The boys sang the pieve ex- cvedingly well; and we need hardly ada ie (with their trained lungs in full play) “chorus was effective.” Rev. E. W. Jackson, chaplain of Armoty Square Hospital, followed some remarks apropos to those of Dr. Channing, urging ths boys to hig@ aims, illustrating by num-rons and interesting examples. Mr. Headley, ot N.J., then made what we call a nfodel speech for boys, right from their platform aud every word of which they could comprehend. And as showing that “a touch of nature makes the wkole worid akin,” it iga tact that bis familiar anecdotal remarks were quite as interesting to the mest cultivated lis- tener as_to the untatored youngsters them- selves, Mr. Headley kaows how to talk to boys—néweboys. ‘Dr. Macgowan (the well known Iscturer on Obina and Japan) also made some pleasant and interesting remarks; and was followed by Prof. Henry, who made what we conceived ito be some most judicious suggestious in regard to the education of these boys.. He thought cure should be taken not to hold up to them the idea of being great men, but rather of being gecd men, Not one in amuithon could rigs to the Presidency, but all could be good.
