The progress of grape culture and the mann- facture of native wines has made great pro- gress in the United States within the last ten years, and has finally culminated in such products as the California wines and brandies of Kehler and Frohling, which haye stood close scientiie analysis, aud have already achieved a national reputation. Dr. Craig, of the Surgeon General's Office, after a careful chemical analysis, reports that theee liquors are all absolutely pure, contain- | ing no foreign substance except the burntsugar with which the brandy is colored. Thesweet- ness of the wines is found to be due entirely to grape sugar, and not to cane sugar, artificially added. The brandy he declares, to be cer- tainly distilled trom the grape, though he finds the taste somewhat coarse as yet. The port wine, which is declared by Dr. Craig to te suitable for medicinal purposes, is recommended by Surgeon Woodward, also of the Surgeon General's office, as better calcu- lated for the use of the sick in the army than any other he has examined. The Museate}, a wine of delicious boquet, by common consent. however, takes the lead in the list of the Messrs. Kohler & Frobling; though the luscious Angelica and the delicate Hock have a strong array of supporters for the supremacy. The adherents of any and all of these liquors canuot, however, go amiss, as they are certain to get & pure article, and can therefore consult their respective tastes as to flavor withoutrun- ning the risk of being poisoied by an adultera- tion. The wines and brandies of Messrs. Kohler & Frobling can be obtained of all leading dealers. Mags.
