Children, you should naver kt Your angry passions rsa; Your jittte hands were never made Totear each other’s eves. Cn Friday evening an adjourned meoting of ‘the teachers of McKendree Sunday School was held at the chapel to consider the protest pre- sented by Brothers J. ©. Harkness and J. N- Davis tothe action of the Quarteriy Confer- ence in passing a resolution declaring the zehool auxiliary to the M.E.S. S. Union and requesting the school to subscribe to the Suadcy School Advocate. The animated nature of the proceedings of the previous meetings, and the spicy discussions upon the slavery question and the sudject of religioas noveis in the li- | brary, had given so much zest to the affair that the large lecture room of McKendr2e was crowded with people, male and female, young and clc, who were sufficiently interested to keep their absorbed attention untilone o’clock in the morning. In the courseof the evening the excitement Tan high, at times threatening personal cul- lisions, and those who kad not the priviiege of the floor let off their steam by an amount of expectoration sadiy at variance with the ad. Morition piacarded on the walis against to- bacco-spitting. The debate was opened by Brother Smith, Who spoke in opposition to the adoption of the protests referring at leagth to the course of the Sunday School Advocate, which had been called & lying sheet, two paragraphs being cited, une oi which was the answer of “Corporal Fry” to a Loy in Maryland, which answer was tat ‘the corporal did not think it right taat mon shouki hoid their fellow men in bondage. He contended that the Advocate did not draw an invidious dis.iaction between the children of iree and slave States, as alleged in the protest, nd spoke at considerable lengthon the unswer ef Corporal Fry, which he considered wus Tight. Next as to the charge that Dr. Wise, ed- itor of the Advocu‘e, had interpolated the word «« American” in quoting John Wesley’s denua- ciation of siayery as the sum of human vil- dainies. He held that Wesley mast have hid Wirect reference to American slavery, the Af- | rican siave trade and American slavery to- gether comprehending all villainies. American slavery gave rise to some villainies not attribu- table to the slave trade. The speaker referred to the protest, and pro- | nounced tic charges that efforts were being made totake the school out of the hinds cf those con ening and the charges against the motives of Brothers Cook and Thrasn, to de unfounded. With some warmth the speaker spoke of the action of the school in discarding | Abe Advocaie. j Brother Harkness stated that the parents of some of the children had objected to the sub- | t: Scribing to the Advocate; that pareats in two instances bad returned the paper, and he Was unwilling that the paper should be taken when the parents object to it. Brother Smith (proceeding) thought it best to tay ihe protest du the table, and offered a sub- siitute declaring the (Quarterly Conference shall haye the supervision of the school, which shall be auxiliary to the M. E. Sanday School Union; providing that the constitution of the school te amended so that it may compiy wita the discipline, und that the school subscribe to 200 Copies of the Sunday School Advocate. Brother W. H. Squires next got the floor, and charged that the champion of Methodiym (Brother W. A. Vooz) whots now making sil this trouble, and who insists upon every arti- cle Of the discipline being carried out, is him- self yiolsting it, by net attending class meeting. Bicther Cook called Brother Squires to order. He was not en trial before the school; but he Was prepared to vindicate his character before the proper trybtnal; and as the charge had been made he shonid require Drother Synires to substantiate it =) arkness (in the chair) said that full vied been allowed Brother Cook, w ted Brother Davis and otners in a | speech of four hours, and he held that Brother | >quitys should baye the same latitude, Brother peech, he sad, thong’ so tong, did wot . Some of the brethren called out «amen :' Beother Langley bringing up the rear wilh a fervent one. s Brother Cook.—“The amens of some are | worthiess.”” Brother Langley (exciledly.)—“If I did not stand better inthe church and community than you do I would give up making speeches.” Bro'her Cook raised another point of order, that Brother Harknes bemmg an imteresied sought not to cecupy the chair, aad that he had no right to make decisions, and that such a5 he made were partial. Brother Squires repeated his charges that Brother Cock cj not attend class-meeting, and be warned Brother ©. that his soul was in danger. Brother Squires proceeded to defend | the library al considerable length, contending that it was narrow-minded to demand that the books should ail be sectarian. Brether James N. Davis then obtained the ficor, end while arranging his pretty extensive pile of papers. Erother F. S. Harvey proposed to lay tra! whole subject on the table. Ruied out of order. Brother Ferris stated that he wished to make & short explandtion. Brother pavis rerused to yield the floor. Brother Ferris appesied to the meeting to aliow him to refute the charges which had been made against him. H The Chur (Brother Harkness.)—Charges bavye also bren made against me, brother. Brother Davis commenced by referring to the debate, stating that Brother Ferris had made a | jong speech on the siavery question, closed by offering his one hundred doliar gold watch if | Brother Markness proved certian allegations | | in reference tothe Advocaie. Mr, Harkness had proved them, but the watch had not beeu given up. Brother Thrush had followed, and quoted lurgely irom the Discipline to show that he did | nothing buthis duty in making a simih port to that of Brother Cook to the (nu: Conference: and Brother K Rad tayored | the ss:ociation with @ speech of over four hours, emphasized by & wheribarrow ioad of | ; which, however, did not amonat io | , much, | The design of the protest was to indnc | Quarteriy Conference to reconsider their action | end allow the school to remain free as here'g- | ‘Tore. | Brother Davis then entered upon an ex. | planation in regard to a certain entry in tue journal of the Conference (he having dean tha » secretary) in reference to the action of that body on the ques:ion. He had understood the | werolution of brother Cook, adopted by the t Conterence, to be merely recommenilatory that the Surday school should become auxiliary to the Methodist Sunday School Union; and had | 80 recorded it. Since the controversy apon the pvint, the i presiding elder bad ins:racted him to correct the journal so as to make the resolution maa- datcry, but be (the speaker) sull held to the vpinion thet his original eatry was correct. Some remark maie here by Brother Davis a3 to those concerned in the authorship of the re port made to the conference upon the Sunday school question, brought Rev. Mr. Thrush, Minister at McKendree Church, to his feet, and he demanded to know of brother Davis if tae zliusion was to him. The enswer of brother Davis not being quits satisfactory to brother Thrush, the latter re- peated his demand, said he did aot wish it :o go forth that he hag lied in the mat‘er, and that he should hofd brother Davis responsibie tor Any insinuations or reflections upon him. It might be reptied that these were true narratives, while the others were fictions; but he held in his hand a work ot fiction which he had never heard objected to ‘ese — in which much ia said about courtship and marriage. Brother Davis procseded to read, amid the approving glances of the young ladies present, quite largely from the courtship and msrriage of Mercy, as told by Banyan. Brother Cook.—*Oh, that is an allezory.” Breather Davis went on to speak of the course ef the Conference upon tke Sanday Schooi question, and asto what he understood Brother Cook to have alleged in relation to the school. He called upon various brothers by nam to say if his ‘version of Brother Uoox’s remarks were correct, and they answered affirmatively. Brother Cook enquired why Brother Davis did not call upon various other brothers who were at the conference as to their unders!and- ing of his remarks. other Langley said he was willing to gtva had been correctly quoted by Brother Davis. Brother Cook thought Brother Langley too excitable to be a competent witness. 2 Brother Langley (to Bro®her 00k.) — You are a nuisance to the church and the commu- nity! If you don't mind you's] be put out!” Brother Langl>y abont this time put himself into as Heenaiish an attitude as the narrow pew would admit, and gesticulated in so lively a manner towsrds brother Cook that several persons rose to tkeir feet, with the expectation that a free fight was about to be eatered upon. Somebody pulled Brother Langiey down by the coat tail, but immediately that the restraint was withdrawn up he hopped likea “ Jack-in- the- Box,” and denounced Brother Cook as a babbler;” and being again reduced by his retherments to 4 sitting posture he bobbed up } Presently and styled Brother Cook a «con. | temptibile skunk;” and in less than a minute Was up again in the liveliest manner to say again that he would make Brother Cook smoke for it, and other things not pleasant to expe- r.ence.. Brother Cook easayed to reply, when the Chair (Brother Hazkness) sternly told him to sitdown. ~ Brother Cook enquired why “that man” (re- ferring to Brother Langley) had been per- mitted to goon without interruption. Brother Langley was up like a shot, warn- ing Brother Cook not to designste him as “ that man.” Brother Harkness (moderator of the meeting and Superintendent of the Sunday School) told Brother Cook that Brother Langley was only replying to insults by him to Brother Langley. The disturbance having quicted down, Bro- ther Davis proceeded with his defense of the library and ot the course of Brother Harkness and himself, who had both labore so long and 80 zealously in behalf of the McKendree Sun- day School. i Brother Davis concluded at 12% o'clock, and demanded the previous questior, which was orcered—yeas 1i, nays it.
