THE FASHIONS. From Le Foilet.) The tavor with which plaid has been receiv- bes is decidedly diminishing. Still the collets | jaia velvet, and fringe to match, are worn, ugh now rather an Sec eae than a} wegen fashion, as formerly. hey are more | generally made of cloth or milled flannel, in | patterns of wide black checks upon velvet or green ground, with chenille fringe of the two colors. Small paletots are also made of | ane same materials, and trimmed with fringe. | ‘Velvet rotondes in black, violet or blue, as also | in striped plush, are equally fashionable. Be- | aides those of cloth or velvet, mantles of silk, | | lined and wadded, trimmed with wide gnipure or possementerie, Mixed with beads, are worn; but, althongh yery pretty, they are certainly | scarcely so suitable to the weather as materials of warmer appearance. A haif-fitting casaque of Lyons cloth, with a rouleau of fur, has a | very stylish effect. Fur is admissible as a trimming even for @ full dress, though, of course, then only worn by ladies who do not | dance. Satin or velvet dresses of light colors | are being made with trimmings of ermine | swansdown, er grebe, round the bottom of the | skirt, and sometimes also om the body. They have an exceedingly rich and elegant appear- ance Satin brocatelle or velontine are oecasi onally | | made with quite plain skirts. When trimmed | it must be either with fur, feathers or lace. | Upon a dress of Mexico blue or Empress mauve | ‘satin, two or three bands of feathers produce a splendid effect. Lace, also, is very much used | witb satin, and there are some exquisite lace tunics made for this purpose. Guipure is not 20 effective as Chantilly. Ruches, flounces with narrow satin trim- mings, butterfly bows, medallions, leaves of | lace, and especially passementerie, are worn as trimmingsthis winter. Passementerie isin great | favor for vestes, which are trimmed with bands of it, forming braces. Upon Figaro yestes the | chief elegance is in the epaulets with jet beads | ended with banging ornanients. hese are | now made long and narrow, very much orna- mented with embroidery of passementerie, ter- minating with acut jetornament. For visiting dress in rich materials some persons have adop- | ted the fashien of haying the skirt made per- | fectly plain. | Moires of a very large water are very much | in vogue, especially the short moires. Those | witha black ground and wide piain satin stripes | are also very handsome. A similar patiern 18} meade in taffetas 1 The fic wing style of dress called Louis XV, | THE EVENING STAR. | is that usually adopted for robe de chambre, or morning dress. Itis made with large plaits in | the back. The form sou/ane—which is aiso used | for morning dresses. is without large plaits | end has less fullness. For this reason, howev- €r, itis not so graceful. This garment, being especially reserved for morning wear, is ‘usual. ly made simply of cashmere, flannel or alpaca. Whea plain, the colors preferred are iron-gray | or deep blue. Others are made in black and i white check or plaid. Wide bands suiting the | dress s1e used &s trimmings. A plaid band on | the iron-gray ; upon the blue or plaid a baud of | tafetas or black velvet. For these simple robes de chambre can be sub- | stituted others of a richer description, as pon- | cean harigsouarat covered with rich black braid- | ing and ementerie, oF plaid poplin with vel- ve bade; OF StIE more elegaan pinsh with / velvet. or quilted satin band: —this can only be | in the Louis XV style. | Foniard formerly was considered a summer | material}, now it is worn generally at sli | times of the year that we must not pass it py | without notice. When of a dark shade it is es- ally useful for dull or wet wexther, as it oops up so easily over the petticoat, and does | not crumple. Violet and dark gray are the colors most pri ferred for wal in cashmer patterns of ps s upon stripes are reserved for morning 2t-home dress. This toilet would have a very elegant fect if made of blue satin with black Chantilly ace. A dress of foulard—white ground, with bou- quets of blue flowers. A flounce of blue taife- las round the skirt, which is made witha train. The flounce, about a quarter of a yardin depth | behind, but quite narrow in front, is edged with an insertion of black lace laid flat on, anda | similar insertion forms a heading. Higher np | the skirt, at equal distances, are placed butter- fly bows of black lace insertion. Braces to match, commencing trom the band, are car- ried over the shoulders, where they increase considerably in width and form epaulets. At the bottom of the sleeve a revers to match. A dress of maise-colored satin, with two rows" of chenille putstraight round the skirt and one waved between them. Upon the body, which is bigb, a trimming of chenille in the style ofa figaro veste. The sleeve small, and opened up to the elbow. A frill of lace round the bottom and down the tront, forming a jatot. A black moire dress, trimmed round with a | quilling of the same. The bonnets of the present season ought to please, we think, the most fastidious ladies, as they are so sexctedingly becoming, being just marge enough to forma framework round the | face and tr ed both inside aud out without sere exaggeration ; so that we are almost termapt- to wish they would remain as they sre.
