‘THE EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON CITY: | FRIDAY........,...... JANUARY 1, 1964. | @7 BEADING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. | BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TBLE- | @EAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. | OUR MILITARY BUDGET. , GONE UNDER. We have repeatedly been asked what has become of ex-Senator Yulee, of Florida, who, it will be remembered, was for many yearsous of the most persistent and maliguant laborers in the work of getting up the rebellion. The inst heard of him, out of rebeidom, was on the © occasion of our first occupation of Fernandina, (very early in the war,) when he was seen to jump from a railroad train in motion, to trust to his legs in getting out of the way of tue pur- suing Yankees; the locomotive not progtessing fast enough for his fears. On that ocoasion a bnrsting shell caused him to drop carpet-baz and dodge at full speed ixto the thick under- brush. If he ever got out of it, the fact has not been made public even in Dixie; as from that day to this—perhaps two years—no mention has been made of him that we have seen, in Any newspaper, rebel or loyal. Had be gone ander in mid-ocean he could hardly have dis- appesre& more suddenly and conclusively tcm the public view—a fate richly deserved, | aad, to him, & punishmen? aimosi as distasteful as eternal damnation after death. 2 PRIZE STEAMER CHATHAM. The Navy Department has received from Lient. Commender Geo. A. Stevens a detailed account of the capture of the steamer Chat. ham by the U.S. gunboat Huron, off Doboy Sound, Georgia, ou the 16th ult. The Olat- hom attempted to run by, but ten shots from | c am | the Huron stopped her career. The Chat} was bound to Nassau, and was loaded with 29 bales of cotten, and 2 quantity of tobacco and resin. ALMABY, Dee. 4!.—The Governor has re- moved the Metropolitan Police Commissioners and appointed in their places Jos. S. Bosworth and Wm. McMurray, ot New York, aud Wm. | B. Lewis, of Brooklyn. Governor Seymour takes the ground that, | since their answer to the charges made against tbem, there were good grounds for their re- moval, but he was unwilling to muike au. ebange during the excitemenis of the p ; season, but tbat an official report lately made | tohim by the Commissioners, xbout ihe riots | in July last, was sectarian and pariisan, and | shows that the Commissioners have departed | trom an impartial and dispastionate position as public officers, and that they have lost their | nsefulness. The passage complained o: reads as follows : “These vicient proceedings had political de- sign and direction, and received encouragement from newspapers and partisans of intiuence and intelligence. The Board of Police hava been threatened withsummary removsl, which | they expected to occur immediately. Nom- ! bers of the force desired their removal, and their were not lacking instances of ineubordi- nation, the fruit of expected change.
