An association purse of #1) was run for at two-mile heats; entries, Mr. Spencer’s seyven- year-old roan gelding “Ace of Diamonds;” Dr ‘Weldon’s five-year old bay horse imp. « Hills- | borough;” the bay horse “Panic,” aged six years, (owned by George Wilkes, proprietor ot Wilkes’ Spirit of the Times,) entered by T. G. Moore; and OU. G. Huyck’s bay gelding “Dixie.” The latter sported the black and red colors, | Panic blue and blue, Hillsborough red and maroon, and the Ace of Diamonds white. | FIRST HEAT. The horses started well together, the three | bays, Panic, Hillsborough and Dixie, all in a | ruck, drawing away from the Ace of Dia- monds, showing palpably that Diamonds were not trumps in this race. As they swung into the home stretch on the first mile, Dixie made play tor the lead, collared Hillsborough, bu; never reached Panic, who passed the score a clear length in advance. On the secend mile the running was very pretty and close to the half-mile post, on the part of the bays, but the rider of the Ace of Di- amonds hardly got into the quarter stretch time enough to see the other horses go into score. From that point Panic opened daylight bet ween him and Hillsborough, and Hillsborough again doubling the dose on Dixie, crept away trom the latter in turn, which distances were increased respectively between the three into the hone stretch, when Panic came home an easy winner, Hillsborough second, Dixie dis- tanced, and Ace of Diamonds nowhere in sight, Time—First heat, 4m. 3s. SECOND BEAT. A good star! was effected. Panic went off ‘with a rush, gained steadily on Hillsborouzh —both going at a rapid rate—was never caught by hiiu, and came home an easy winner. Time—3 min. 46 sec. Panic had the call in the betting, and was roi on time on the last heat, the betting being against his making it in 3.50. He won, making it in 3.46, as above stated, and came in scarcely blown at that. Panic, it will be remembered, is the horse sold for $5,000, at New Orleans, by General Butler, as confiscated property. The reputation of the horse was not high at that ‘time, he having failed at Saratoga and other races; but his purchaser had faith that there ‘was something in the animal, and the fact was developed in yesterday’s race. From present indications Panic will stand well in the betting on Saturday’s four mile race. Matou Race ror $1,000. Succeeding the two mile race yesterday, a match race single mile $500 a side, was run be- tween the cavalry horses “Steve Elliot” and «Harry Osterhaus” and won by Elliot in 2. To-day the racing on the National Course is mile heats best 3 in 5, Purse $300. Entries Mat- tie Vaughan, Kentucky Hunter, and Hillsboro- ugh. The order on the course, notwithstanding the immense attendance, has been unexcep- tionable throughont, thus far. To Mr. Mafiitt, the proprietor of the course, and to Col. Den- nis, who despite his heavy Patent agency busi- ness, finds time to give valuable nid to the ad- vancement of turf interests, infinite credit is due for the admirable manner in which the T2cing season has been conducted. —>—__— BrsLE Socruty.—At the monthly meeting, Monday evening, of the Board of Managers of the Wushington City Bible Society, interesting correspondence with the parent sonny, was read relative to a special application tor Bibles and Testaments for distribution; relative to the jvint employment of @ special agent or superintendent of distribution among the great number of U.S. soldiers. Report, of which 1,500 coples, with the ad- dresses delivered at the anniversary, were or- | dered to be printed. = A statement from the depository was read, showing that from the Ist of May until the ; present time there have been distributed trom the Uni States soldiers, quartermaster’s men. mechanics and laborers, to patients in hospita!s in and around this city, to vessels and crews. and to prisoners in the ‘1d Capitol and else- where, 391 comes of the e tire Bible and 22,621 copies of the New Testam nt, amounting at the regular cost price to $3,231.71. indebtedness of this to the Parent Society ‘was stated to be about $XW, to liquidate which, as well as to provide stili further supplies for the depository, it was suggested that special efforts should be made through the churches of | the city. ——— An Uaty Customer.—Last night, a young man calling himself Bernard H. Hawkins, at- tacked two young men on the Avenue, and afterwards went into Hugh McMahan’s, near the corner of Second street, from whose place he was ejected. Officers Milstead and Whit- More arrested and took him to the station, he fighting them during the entire distance, and there they put him in a cell with a soldier, who he immedistely attacked, and it was found necessary to remove him to another cell and put him in irons. The officers held him in custody on suspicion of being a deserter. ep DEPREDATIONS at tHe Wuits Hovss.— Some woman visited the East Room cf the President's Mansion yesterday about twelve o'clock, and attempted to remove a tassel trom one of the curtains. SEAER SES Be Forp’s New THEATER.—The Tenth street Theater promises to be the center of no little brilliancy and beanty this evening, inasmuch as Mr. J. Wilkes Booth appears for the only time as Claude Melnotte, in Bulwer’s cele- brated play entitled “The Lady of Lyons. or Love and Pride.” Itis scarcely necessary for us to say that the part of the soa of the Gar- dener Melvotte is one of this promising young actor’s best renditions, and has gained for him no inconsiderable praise wherever he has per- formed it. The play is exceedingly well cast, the characters being judiciously distributed among Messrs. Peareon, Wilkins, Miss Waite and other fine members of the large company. To-morrow Booth has a benefit. naa SICKNESS AY THE Minzs.—It is @ terrible thing for the miner to be prostrated by disease in his far off camp, where privetione are many and o: +e few.
