The attendance yesterday was large— from three to four thousand—the weather de- lightiul, and the sport good, considering that there was but one event on hand,—the three mile race. The severity of the campaign carried on by the leading stables this year has told upon both horses and trainers, consequently several of the horses, Idlewild and others, counted upon for the race of yesterday, were not quite in condition to appear, Three were entered: the Canadian gray colt Thunder, the black colt Blackbird, and bay horse John Morgan. Thunder was the favorite from the start, in the betting, at odds of 100 to 15; and also in the pool selling, which was auctioneered by that practised sporting man, Capt. Barton, of Balti- more, who, cigar-box bank in hand, did con- siderable business prior to the start. The race was announced for three o'clock, but for an hour or two previous there was a crowd on the ground doing preliminary busi- bess, amongst which was a close inspection of | the stables, in which the horses to ran were closely padlocked, as if to get some inkling to guide them in the betting. Another curious crowd was in attendance tpon the riders, as they donned the peculiar garb of the jocky. Gilpatrick, who was to ride “Thunder, was the nattiest ofthe three, wearing smart black cap, trim black surtout, (thrown off when the horses were divested of their wrappings,) biack jacket, white pants and white-topped boots. He is of fame in his line, rode Lexington in the great New Orleans race aga nst time; and was taken ta Europa by Ten Broeck, it will be remembered, to ride against the English jockies. He brought 101 pounds to the scales yesterday, (riding a four-year-old,) but can make weight under i. There were other riders (notengaged yesterday) of the same prematurely old, Lum Cooperish style of face peculiar to the professional rider, to be seen about the stable yard. The four-year old Blackbird was ridden by Harry Boyle, 104 pounds: and the five-year old | John Morgan by Tom Patton, 114 pounds. Tom was brilliant in red and moreen; and the colors of John Morgan were blue and green. At half-past two, Mr. Maffitt placed the purse of $600 in its receptacle over the track, and the bell was struck for the horses to be got in readiness. In the drawing for places Black- bird got the inside track, Thunder the second place, and John Morgan the third. The horses were walked about in their blan- kets to get them warmed up, and at the order to saddle were promptly stripped of their wrappers, and the betting-folk hurried to their vicimity to inspect their condition. The little black looked as fine as silk, and fairly shone in the sun, but was of rather wo Tull a habit to suit the veterans of the turf. Morgan appeared well and made some friends, but Thunder, who looked in good run- xing form, maintained pretty much his first supremacy in the betting. A good start was made, and the bay went off ahead, making the running, but the pace was slow; Blackbird close up to the bay, and Kil- patrick taking it easy in the rear with Thunder. They came by the stand in the same position in 2m.2s., Morgan a couple of lengths ahead, and the gray the same distance in the rear of Blackbird. The second mile of the heat was also run slow, the horses in the same order, Gilpatrick holding back on the gray, but edging up for the inside, and on the opening of the third mile he let the gray out a little, shot by Blackbird at the quarter mile and lapped and passed the bay with apparent ease, coming in past the stand at a slapping pace, the last mile being run in run in Im. 50.2-5 sec- onds, and the heat in 6m. 8 xs. SECOND HEAT. The owners ot Morgan changed their tactics for this heat, and Patton was instructed toran from the start. They led oft, Thunder inside, mext the black and last the bay, but the latter ‘was promptly taken to the front by Patton and opened a gap for his competitors at such a rat- tling pace that his supporters indulged in a big hurrah under the idea that the rate of run- ning was beyond Thunder's endurance; Black- bird, who seemed intolerably lazy and slug- gish throughout the race, not entering into the account. Thunder, past the half mile, reduced the gap to a bare strip of daylight, and lazy Black- bird got waked up by the emulation ahead and ‘worked himself up to the vicinity of the others. They came past the stand in the first mile Morgan three lengths ahead (rider with cap off) and Blackbird the same distance in the rear of ‘Thunder. Time 1 min. 55 sec. Kilpatrick now shook himself out for work, closed upon the bay—Blackbird picking up amazingly also—and about this time Thunder struck out as if launched from a bow, shot up to the bay, and past, as if the latter were standing atill. The bay again clapped on steam, andtney came with a tremendous rush up to the home stretch at the finish, when John Morgar gave ” ub- bat ceed te will ‘and will out at the distance pole; Blackbird fagged, anu } ‘Thunder came in easily running the Jast milein 1 min. 54 sec. They succeeded in getting ont of the city, but were halted at Bla- densburg, about ten o’clock, by the guard, when Hudgins refused to comply, and was fired at. the ball taking effect in his right knee cap, injuring the arteries so that amputation Was necessary. Both of them were bronght back and placed 1gain iu confinement, and yes- terday Dr. C. M. Wilkes Booth the beautiful tragedy in five acts, known toour theatricai habitues as The Robbers, will be presented this evening. The play, we are led to understand, will he placed upon the boards of Mr. Ford’s theater in a style which will fairly compete with the resources ot any place of amusement in America. Mr. Booth will play the part of Charles DeMoor, Mr. DeVere that of Francis De Moor; whilst the other characters will be distributed among ar- tists of recognized ability, the whole forming a galaxy of talent rarely known to the boards of a Washington theater.
