LOCAL NEwWs. ‘ AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT: Forp’s TuxBTkR.—Maggie Mitchell makes her last appearance at Ford’s Theater to-night, and will sprear om this parting occasion as * Fanchon.” There is no doubt but that theater &cers generally will regret Maggie's departure, although her engagement has been so long. But Maggie is one of those actresses whose attrac- tions never wane. The house will no doubt be crowded to-night. CanTERBURY.—Orowded houses nlgnty ate tend the excellence of the entertainments offered by manager Sinn’s Concert Hall and Dramatic ae eee To-night Jnlia Mortimer, Ernes. tine de Faiber, Mintis and Clara Fowler, H. McQuillan wae tried for an assault and battery with intent to kill Owen O'Hare, at tne gas house in the First ward, on the 7th inst, From the evidence it appears that the accused ‘was the foreman over a gang of laborers at the gas works, and that O'Harois the general super- intendent, and they met each other at the works bout ten o’clock on the night in question, and had some words. O'Hare afterwards went to <his office, when the accused came in and another | difficulty occurred, during which McQuillan threatened to kill O'Hare, and a scufile ensued, during which the latter was struck over the head three times with the Pistol and seriously injured. It was testified on the part of the defense that the pistol was not loaded. The jury returned a verdict of guilty of assault and ane only, and he was sentenced to pay a tine of $25 and costs, or be imprisoned in jai) for thirty days. Messrs. Morgan and Norris ap- peared for the defense, and Col. J. Rell Adams assisted District Attorney Carrington. Conrad Wachter, convicted of keeping a bawdy house, was sentenced to jail for ten days and to pay a fice of $50, and in default of payment to be imprisoned two months longer. fhe application of Mr. Norris for a new ivial in the case of Lloyd Johnson, convicted of an assault and battery, was refused by the court. after our | —— ee Hattow Eve.—To-night is Halloween, the night upon which, according to old Scottish tradition, witches and fairies hold carnivals and have high times. Robert Burns has im- mortalized the night and its customs, by de- scribing it in a nember of his beautiful compo- | % sitions; but except among the hills of old Scot- jand, and among the descendants of Scotchmen | in this country and elsewhere, the observance | of the night in conformity to the old customs, has passed ont of date. ‘The people, us a mass, have beceme incredulous, and will no more ‘believe that fortunes are told, nor that desti- nies are read by strange devices; and the power -of the fairies to breathe into the heart of a damsel the name of her lover, is among the things that were. However, in many house- holds to night, and around many a happy | P hearthstone, the old traditions will be kept up,and in many other places the tradi- tions will be defied, and the occasion will he used as one upon which to p!ay with impunity all sorts of pranks and tricks upon quiet neighbors and nou-believers in tne fairies, ‘witches, devils, and mischief-makers that are said to be everywhere present upon this night. gic PoLice RErorts.—First Precinct.—Gaorge Pickerell, assault and battery; jail.
