The employes got an inkling of the visit, and the various portions of the building were decorated with excellert taste with flags, mottoes, wreaths, evergreens, | It had been announced that the visit | &e., &e. would be made at three o'clock, aud punctual- jy at that hour the Prestdent made his appear- ance, and was received by Mr. Defrees, the Superintendent, and after spending a short | time in the office, he proceeded to inspect the ! various departments of the estab‘ishment, in | ‘company with Mr. Detrees. | He first visited the stereotyping department, | where Mr. ©. W. Murray has six persons em- | ployed; and here the Presideat examined min- utely, and with much interest, the method of | casting and preparing the platvs. This room was handsomely decorated with flags, mottoes, &e. The machine shop was next visited. In this | shop are seven hands, under the charge of Mr. | M. Lincoln, chief engineer. The repairing of the presses and machinesis done here. Amin- | iature engine about nine incites long, one inch | cylinder and two inch stroke, aitracted much attention here; and a broken-down engine, soon to be replaced by a new one from the establish- ment o1 Messrs. Gray & Noyes, of this city, was dJateled, “Like the Southern Uontederacy, near | played out,” which drew a laugh from the | resident. The President from here proceeded to the store and “ wetting’ room, where a number of boys and men are engaged in preparing the paper for the press; and as he was about to | enter this apartment the colored man whose duty it is to make rollers for the presses met | Mr. Lincotn and expressed his regrets that it | ‘was so muddy thatthe President coald net go out and see how he made rollers. The Presi- dent, noticing the diminished size of his iuter- | locutor, said, laughingly, to him that he did not look as if adapted to wade in very deep mad himtelf, aud expressed awish to see some ot bis work. ANDREW A. URoss, Washington, October 24, 1863. A committee was appointed to consider this | protesi, and they reported that the protest was wrong with regard to facts, and the report of the committee was accepted. Gn motion of Rey. Dr. Gurley: Resolved, That it be overtured to the Gencral Assembly to consider the propriety of altering the Constitution of onr Courts of Appeal. The time of the meet ng of the poxt Synod was altered from the third Thursday to the third Tuesday of October, 1561. This evening “The Pearl of Savoy,” which has attracted such marked attention heretofore, will be pre- sented for the Tas' time. There is prob«bly 10 piay which Miss Mitchell's ex'ensive repertoirs bresents that is more deserving of public favor. It bears the imprimer of a mister mind in its every detail, and does infinite credit to the an‘hor of « Fanchon, the Cricket” and « Li'tle Barefoot.” The superb acting of Miss Mitchell as «Maric, ’ Mr. J. The President remained some time in this room, and examined minutely the working of the various presses. Mr. John Graham is the rincipal pressman, and Mr. John McLeod | Ioreman of the job presses. After a short time spent in the drying-room, (et which Mr. L. The folding-room, in the third story, wasnow visited, and what with the one hundred and | twenty pretty girls and the decorations of the Toom, flowers, flags and mottoes tastefully ar- Tanged, it presented a decidedly pleasant sight. The girls here are employed feeding the cutting and folding machines and preparing the work forthe binders, under the direction ot Mr. J. W. Herrison, and each portion of the work ‘was explained to the President. While tho Presicent was here, work at the machines was suspen ied for a moment, and Miss Ella Lush- horn advanced with two handsome boqeets, which she presented him in the following words: «Mr. President: Permit me, on behalf of my associates, to present to you these flowers. “May tle blessings of heaven attend you, sir, and richly reward yourefforts for the resto- ration ot unity and peace to our beloved land.” The President acce) cepted the flowers, expres- se his thanks, and wished the fair donor ight get a good husband. This branvb es the _pablic work, under the direction of Mr. J. D. Defrees, has been in tull operation since the Jast session of Congress, the incressed business of the departments in consequerc- of the reveliion, having thrown a large amount ot work here; and atthe present time there are about six hundred persous who earn a livelihood at the Government office. ‘The mauner in which this monster establish. ment is conducted, reflects much credit apon the officers and employes.
