The information that reached the front yes- terday afternoon is believed to have indicated that Lee’s army is moving along the Bull Run Mountains towards the Potomac. We have no idea that Lee designs venturing another raid north of that river. His late movement was after the style of Stonewall Jackson, bat with- out any of the success that attended his re- markable achievements. Lee's aim was, prob- ably, to strike a disastrous blow at our right flank. The'march tomake it, being a very ex- hausting one, must have cost him heavily in used-up men and horses. Its entire failure therefore leaves him far weaker than when ou | the Rapidan. His present movements, as far 5 we have been able to obtain information con- cerning them, leads to the belief that he is al- ready aiming to get away from Meade’s imme- diate front as cheaply as possible, and, it is to be taken for granted, Meade will make him pay | dearly for bis venture, if he can. We therefore 400K Tor & battle to-day or to-morrow, our forces being the attacking party. THE SITUATION. The New York Herald is correct in saying that it was not the safety of our army, but the destruction of Lee’s, that was the main object of Meade’s recent retrograde movement. Lee as so far made nothing whatever, except con- siderable loss, by his raid, which leaves him greatly weakened in his new position, while ‘we are comparatively as much stronger in ours, ‘with chances for a general battle under in- + finitely more advantageous circumstances than | existed on the banks of the Rapidan. FROM THE ARMY, From parties who arrived here last night, leaving the tront at two o'clock Pp. m., we learn there was no fighting of consequence day be- fore yesterday. There was considerable skir- mishing yesterday, and come rather heavy firing before our informant left, im the direc- tion of Bull Run and Centreville. The de- monstrations were made by rebel forces, and our forces at all times obtained the advantage. Im fact it 1s the testimony of all parties that General Meade has repulsed alt attacks, and oceupies @ position from which theenemy can- not possibly dislodge him. Our losses thus far on the whole retreat from Culpeper amount to perhaps two hundred sol- diers, killed, wounded, and missing, and a few ‘wagone, arid a small amount of baggage belong- ing to the Sixth Corps; which was destroyed by ourown men, and thus were prevented from falling into the enemy’s hands. The loss in the 2d corps at the battle of Bris- tow’s Station was about 200 killed and wounded, the proportion of killed being small. The can- monading on Thursday was caused by an attempt of the rebels to cross Bull Ran. At Union Milts, where the railroad crosses the stream, and at Mitchell’s and Blackburn’s Fords, the rebels kept up a brisk artillery fire to cover their crossing. This fire did very little damage to our troops, who generally were ‘under cover, and when the rebels would mass bodies of infantry to attempt a crossing our artillery and infantry soon dispersed them. The day passed in skirmishing until sun- down, when the firing ceased. Near dark General Buford’s cavalry had a sharp encoun. ter with the enemy near Brentsville, driving them back in fine style. FINDINGS AND SENTENCES OF THE SLOUGH COURT-MARTIAL, Capt. J. W. Howland, of the fifth army corps, Tecently tried by the Slough Court-Martial on a charge of embezzlement, has been found Suilty, and sentenced to five years imprison. ment in the Albany penitentiary. By the sen- tence of the court, it is made scandalous for an officer of the Army to associate with him. ‘Capt. C. M. Levy, assistant quartermaster in the Department of Washington, under Col. Has- kins, tried en the same charge as above, and 3. specification of which charge was that he paid his clerk a salary of $50 per month and took dis receipt, for $100, has alse been found guilty. By the sentence of the court he is to make good the Joss to Government, is dishonorably dis- missed the service, and is to be held forever disqualified to hold any, office of trust or emo- Jument under the United States Government. ‘The court further directs that the sentence be published in three papers in the city of Wash- ington and three published in Albany, the usual place of L.’s residence, after which it shall be deemed scandalous for an officer of the United States Army to associate with him. ARRIVAL OF 8ICK AND WOUNDED. Yesterday evening, about five o’clock, a train arrived from Fairfax, bringing to this city 134 #ick and wounded soldiers of the Third Corps, and % sick of the First Corps. The wounded men were mostly hit in the arms and Jegs, and ‘Were principally cavalrymen. They were in charge,of Drs. John A. Douglas, 11th Mass., | Sanger, 6th N.Y. Cay. Beebe, 4th N. ¥. Among the wounded officers brought in were Lieut: Miller, 114th Pa. yois.; Capt. 3.0. Vouser, 105th Pa. vols. in arm; Lieut. James Miller, | 105th Pa. yols., above the knee; and Capt. Geo. H, Barry, of the sth N. Y. cav., seriously ‘wounded in the right shoulder. From Corporal Newton, of the ist R. I. cav., | ‘we learn that the reported wounding of Capt- George Rhodes and Lieut. Vose, of that regi- ment, is incorrect. MORE PRISONERS. Forty-six prisoners of war reached here from the tront last night. They were captured on the ith, near Bristow, and are all) North Caro- linians. Burn- side's Staff, Acting Judge Advocate of the De- | partment ofthe Ohio, has just been published | tothe Army, Oapt. Cutts was charged with using insulting language to Capt. Hutton, Aid- de-Camp toGen. Burnside, in relation to the right of the latter to use a certain office wri- ting desk. He was also charged with improps er conduct, in peeping over the door-jam of a lady’s chamber, at the Burnet House, Uincin- nati, Ohio. He was found guilty on both | charges of “conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman,” and sentenced to be dismissed the service; but the President, in consideration otthe previous character and standing of the | accused, and of his gallant conduct in battle, has remitted the sentemce, and ordered him td 4 join his regiment in the field, after receiving a reprimaud from the President. Capt. Hutton, who sent a challenge to Capt. Cutts, for the alleged insulting language about the writing desk, was tried for that offence | found guilty, and sentenced to be reprimand- ed by the President, but the Twenty-fifth Ar- ticle of War imperatively declares that any commissioned officer found guilty of sending a challenge shail be cashiered. The sentence of the Court was disapproved, and Capt. Hutton | Was dismissed the service from Sept.°, 1563. PERsonaL.—Gen. Spinola, though still suf. fering from his wounds, reported for duty on ‘Wednesday, desiring to rejoin the Third Corps, but the military authorities here declined to send him to the front, believing him not to be physically capable of active service. He will, however, be ordered to New York, with author- ity to recruit an infantry corps. * @7 Shillington, Odeon Building, sends us an early copy of Godey’s Lady’s Book for No- vember. _ @7 The house-carpenters of New York are proposing to strike for $2.25 per day.
