Mr. Ellis, from the committee on supplies, presented the bill of William Ballantyne, of | #3.61 for books, which was approveo. Mr. Utermehie presented the application of Miss Kate Riehl, of this city, and Mr. Miller that of M. E. Catlin, of Cleveland, Ohio, for ihe position of teachers. Mr. Rhees stated that he had had the honor ot being appointed a delegate to the school conyenticn which assembled at Chicago, Ill, but owing to circumstances he was not able to reach there in time to participate in the pro- ceedings. He made this statement inorder to show the beard that his non-appearance there was upavoiuable. Mr. Morsell introduced a resolution altering general regulation No. 62, 60 as to make it read that parents or guardians of scholars in desti- tute circumstances. may obtain books for their children or wards tree of charge, also of neces- sary stationary, from the Treasurer, on a requi- sition signed by the sub-board of the district ia which said school may be located; but in all cases such books shall be returned when tne bos il leaves school. Referred to committee on Tolmead introduced a resolution, which wis adopted. requesting the Uity Councils to Sutborize an additional primary school in the Fourth District, the wants of the district re- quirin. it Moesers. Utermehle and Ellisannounced their intenuon of resigning &s members of the Board of Trustees. This was therefore the last meet- ing they would attend. Their resignations were uot tendered omacconnt of any disagree- ment or dissatisfaction with any memberof the board, but simply that both were members of the Councils, and they believed the two daties iucompauble. Mr. Ellis said he desired to reiterate the senti- -Ments expressed by the gentleman from the second district, in regard to the uniform cour- tesy and kindness with which he (the speaker) also had been treated by members of this board. He would continue to take the same interest in the public schools and public instruction as if he remained in the office he now felt ita daty to himself to resign. The question of the commencement of the night schools baving sprung up, it was urged by all the members of the board that it was necessary to commence the night schools as oon as possible, in order to save boys, who would otherwise be upon the street, from in- fluences which it would be difficult to over- come. The board then adjourned. a ee Aa Row on THIRTHBATH STRRET.—Monday af- ternoon, Henry Usier, of Scott's 900, went into the house kept by 8 woman named Brown, on Thirteenth street, between © and D north, where be met three men of the 2d D. U. Regi- ment. They had a canteen of whisky, and all took # drink. Soon after which they got into a quarrel. They went out on the pavement, and there Usier was knocked down by one of his comrades; his nose was skinned and his eyes biacked. A Lue and cry was raised that the man was killed, and the assailants ran etf over Fourteenth street bridge.
