SKIRMISHING YESTERDAY. —~——_—_ AERIVAL OF WOUNDED AND PRISONERS FROM THE FRONT. me Parties who have arrived irom the front to-dey say that there was considerable skir- muisming yesterday between the cavalry on either side, and that smart musketry firing ‘was heard yesterday afternoon in the vicinity of Rappehannock Station. Meade has succeeded in placing himself in the desired position to dery any attempt at flank movement by Lee; and the precision with which this has been effected tells well both for the commander and the army. It is evident that Meade docs not intend to permit the enemy to play any of the surprises | upon him that have been practised upon Pope and others thereabout. The cro:sing by Meade to the vorth side of ; the Rappahannock was made mainly at Kel- | ly’s Ford, and it was effect:d in admirable or- | der. As some seem to suppose—secesh especially— § that Meade’s change of pocition has been the result of a serious conflict. itis proper to state that the fichting thus far has been purely (on | our side, at least) by cavalry, and artillery | gupports of cavalry; the main army not haying teen engozed at all. It may be presumed that the movement ot Merde was. in isct. ove previously decided wpon in case of certain contingencies; as is in. dicated by the sending tothe rear some time since certain articles of a cumterous nature. ‘We may not state the exact position taken up by Meade, but can assure our readers that the tenor of the news from the 1ront is most satisfactory; and it would not surprise us to rear that he has adminisiered a sbarp rap over tre knuckles to any ingriiiive body of the Comiederates who may stray in his neigh- borhood for the purpose of ascertaining his whereabouts. Last night, at Warrenton Junction, some rebel sympathizer <et fire to a train of cars containing hay and grain, doing some little | damage. P. Hill advancing on our right flank. This wes near Friday night. There was evidently alarge number of the enemy, but no demon- ctration was made that night. On Saturday mcrning an engagement took place, commenced by driving in the pickets of the 106th New ' York with considerable loss. Colonel Adger, of the Sth Michigan cavalry, early Suturday rorning, perceiving our situa- tioa, intormcd General Kilpatrick that our in- | fantry hed heen partially flanked by rebel cavalry, and that the enemy were in pozses- sion of a race course about two miles from James river. About 10 o'clock a. m., on Saturday, the reb- els advanced along our whole line trom Thor- oughfure mountain to our extreme right flank, the artillery of General Kilpatrick’s command | Opening upon them with great destruction. Early in the day, as they made but little | show of force, our men dashed clear across H some distance from the shore, when three pieces opened upon them, doing but very little dam- | age, however, as Williston’s battery returned the fire, and ina short time silenced the enemy's guns. While Buford’s force was recrossing, a ' large forceot rebel cavalry attacked him, cro-z- ing ata ford above Buford, aud between him | and Kilpatrick, completely cutting off the latter | and ehtirely surrounding him, but he managed to cut his way out with Custer’s brigade, the , Febels baying at this time buth cavalry and in- | tantry in Kilpatrick's rear. Gen. Meade hed previously ordered the troops to fall back, and the retreat continued up to | Brandy Station. Here we repulsed the enemy i and tovk 400 prisoner2. In this fight, Capt. ; Dodze, sth Michigan, commanding battalion, wee killed; Copt. Hastings, 5th Michigan, taken prisoner, and Capt. Oliphant, same regiment severely wounded. Our forces then iell back from Brandy Statien to Rappahannock Station slowly, the rebels still pursuing, but with slackening pace. The army arrived at Rappahannock Station about dark on Sunday night. cae cavalry handsomely covering our retreat. Yesterday moraing our infantry occupied the earthworks 8:ound Rappahannock Station on both sides ot the river, Kilpatrick, in the mean- time, being ordered to Hartwood Church. LOCAL NEWS. eg OnsectTEp To Berna Buriep ALIVE.—Satar- dey, officer Carraher, of the First Ward, tou id the body of &@ mau, wrapped in a tent, lying in the “White lot” south of the Presideat’s Man- sion. An inquest was held by Coroner Wood- ward. and the jury returned a verdict of death trom causes unknowa. Papers found oa de- ceased indicate that his name was Arthur Dennis, and that he had been employed as a waichman at one of the Government st bles. Sunday morning about eleven e’clock, Ser- geant Hurley, pacsing through the same ground, found a m@n wrapped ina tent, and very sick. He gave his nameas Wm. Densmond, was 9 teamster, and came irom New York city. The sergcant sent lor 9 ambulaace to take him to a bospital ; bat betore the ambulance arrived the poor f low expired. The body was interred by order of Capt. Tompkins. A rather curious circumstance is connected With these deaths. It .eems that two old teuts had been left in the lot by men who formerly quartered there. After the inquest was held over Arihur Dennis, the undertaker’s men were direcied to go to the lot and coffin the body, which they would find wrapped in a tent. The men did as they were directed, and were about liiting a body to the coffin, when the euppoced corp-e turned over in their hands, secring both the men and the “3ubject,” who wa naiurally not a little frightened, when told they were direcied to bury him. He in- sisted that he wa- not a candidate for burial; and iuriher search being made, the tent iu which Dennis was laid was discovered, ard Devsmonad cheerfully assisted the men to cof. fin Dennis. It is presamed that Densmoud lnid himself down again in the tent cloth where he wae found by Sergeant Hurley, and died soon after. The White lot has been for many months a common lodging place for meu and women who can find no other shelter. PoLicE REPoRTS.—Second Preciact.—Jno, V~ Bouminger, racine: dismissed.
