The chair was taken by Aug. Edwards, of the Treasury Department, who stated that he had expected to see a much larger attendance, and that the committee wished to see as to what number would be willing to join in the project, as it would be hardly practicable for them to make any contract with the railroad company until they could tell the probable number who would initiate the aflair. He was satisfied from the people in Washington would enter into the orgauizauon, and he urzed that all who came in should do so with spirit, as, unless they did» the scheme would probably fall through. Mr. J. F. C. Tanner was appointed becretary. Japt. Conatty, from the committee to wait on the officers of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, reported that they had had an interview with Mr. Prescott Smith, Superintendent of Trans- portation, which interview was very satisfac- tory. He stated if a sufficient number par- chased commutation tickets that a train will be run for their accommodation, leaving Bal- timore at 7.15 a. m., arriving here at 5.45, and jesving here half an hour after office hours, ‘This train will be for their accommodation ex- clusively, and will have the right of way of ihe track, stopping only at Annapolis Junction. ‘The price of the commutation tickets, (yearly,) taking 200 as the minimum, (and the company will uot run a train for asmaller number,) he thought might be reduced to $125; but the chairmasu (Mr. Edwards) thought that they might te reduced to$1Wv. He would be willing to pay $25 more as an insurance of getting in the city before 9 o'clock, instead of being forced to lay over at Jessup’s Cut, Annapolis Juace tion, or some such out-of-the-way place. Capt. C. read the following statement of prices in Baltimore and this city for a family c! five persons: Meat—s Ibs. per day, in Baltimore 15 cents Per Ib., $165 per year; Washington, 20 cents per Ib., $220 per year. Butter—1 ib. per day, Baltimore, 30 cents, $110; Washington, 35, #129. Coal—6 tons, Baltimore, $8, $18; Washing- ton, $10, #60. W ovd—3 cords, Baltimore, $4, $2); Washing- tow, $10. S30. ‘otatoes—30 bushels, Baltimore, $1, $30; Washington, $1.50, $45. Flour—6 bbls., Baltimore, €9, $18; Washing- ton, #1, S60. Reuts—Ealtimore, 2200, Washington, $400. Clothing, shoes and dry goods—Baltimore, =200; Washington, #240. Vegetables — Baltimore, $75; Washington, S100, Notions—Baltimore, $10; Washington, $50. Cost in Washington $1,333 Oost in Baltimore... 40 Deduct ticket, $1 mate 863. Clear gain teres ceeet-seaneteccess BUY Capt. C. said that this matter wenld have to be putthrough. He did not believe that they nid do better, and if this scheme fell through they would baye to pay for it in the market onses of this city, the dealere at which would ialte advantage of the failure. Mr. Fishback madea statistical statement, J Olessing to show that the prices of most s:nall ticles were fifty per cent. cheaper in Balti- wiore than here. ’ ‘Tbe Chair stated that he had been informed ti.at the president of the road had been in the city the previous evening, and that he enter- tamed the proposition in the right spirit, and would make the best termshe could with them. in Balumore there was a prejudice against the railroad, which they wanted to kill, and would be gied of this opportunity to show that they (the road) are alive to the interests of the city. Jie thought the company could afford to set the price of Lekets at $100, and be announced that he held in his band a paper for signers, who wonld obligate themselves to purchase tickets that price. A gentleman, whose name was not given, suid tbat he bad lived here long enough to kngw that there was among the people a sort ef “morbid sensibility against siguing their bames to anything likely to fall through. He v stifled to the good management of the rail Toad, and believed that the price could be re. euced to $50, He was not however so san- gudune of s@aving money as some were; $200 would probably cover the amount saved. Rents are much the same in Baltimore as here, the only difference is that here there are no houses to rent, and in Baltimore, there are many. The price of board, with rcoms, for a couple ranged trom $15 to $73 per month; but there was no telling what it wouid be if there were children, Lost time would noi Lowever be deducted. He had a family of four, and he despaired of living here at less than $1,000 per year, snd he was going to try it in Baltimore. He had made an estimate for the Support of his family in Baltimore, including the price of tickets, at $350, Mr. Brown said that those who went to Bal- Umore would have to get their breakfasts at six ; o'clock and supper at seven, and usked, “Is a piece of bread and cheese enough! Won't it cost 30 Or 40 cents per day for dinner? Capt. Conatty said that he had been bringing his dinner in his pocket, and stringe to say he wus getting fat on it. (Laughter. } Mr. Browm e@aid that the far on the street railways of each city would haye to be paid which would make the amount considerable He did not say this to fling cold water on the subject, but they sould lock into alk these | to say +1 can shoot, too!” a desire to join that fine elats—both ladies and gen: things. x x Answer,—I did not hear anyone making | tlemen—will y between 12 and | o’clock p, The following committee was appointed to | any thretits.
