The funds stolen were not at the time in the custody of Paymaster Williams, but in mine. The circumstances were these :—Major Wil- diams and myself had then, as now, our offices together on Thirteenth street, at 477, and Major ‘Williams, being about to leave the city for ms North, passed over $3,700 in his possess: ‘me, to te passed back when he returned. or Williams had aclerk named Chapman, w! proposed to remove this money from an iron chest into the wooden chest of Maj. Williams. I promptly objected, and asked him why he ‘wished to remove the money from an iron chest to a wooden one, which was less secure. He replied that it was sO proven its getting mTuixed with come I had of the same kind in the iron chest. J] then said if there was danger of that he had better putit up ina separate and let itremain there,as itwas much safer than in the wooden chest. Chapman still per- sisted, and though I did not consent, yet, with- out reflection on my part, it was done. Mr. Ford, my clerk at the time, made the same ob- jection to the change. At the time of the removal of this money, which was about | o’clock on the day previous tothe night ot the robbery, Augustus A. Boyens, (not Boyden, as erroneously stated in the re- port,) . Ford, Chapman and myself were in the office, and Ohapman, after locking the ‘wooden chest, threw the keys into the iron chest. It is not true that Chapman and Churcn left the city two days after the robbery; Chapman was dismissed by Major Williams, and did not leave for over two weeks, and Church«iid not leaye the city until the isth of Angus Inst. pre- ~ sent to camp. The whites are veually kept until about two o'clock the following day, when they are sent to Analostan Island, where they are placed under the com- mand of Lient. Col. Talbert, 1st Maine a lery, and are at once set to workin learning the duties of a soldier. Up to this time 428 white men have been re- ceived at Capt. Brown’s office, fitted out, and sent over to Col. Talbert, and a few days since, a batch of nearly 400 were sent to the front. Among these men are many who have seen service before in this war and in the Old j World, and some few of them have served as efficers in European armies ‘There is generally some fan at the barracks on the arrival ot the colored substitutes and | accepted men, some of them being most egre- giously green. Thecolored guards who march them to the barracks generally induce some to believe that they must be branded with «U. S.," so as tobe known, and when they reach the camp and are ordered to go into a small room and strip ioe a change of clothing, it not unfrequentl. ppens that some such expres- sion as May aca Vonty, massa, you ain’t g’wine to bran’ us like a mule” is ui Some, when they get into their soger clothes, become very proud, and are much elated when told they look like eoldiers. The contrabands are deeply impressed with the belief that the Lord is interested in the war on the Union side, and some, when they receive their soldier- clothes, 2, that all they want is their guns, and then they “are ready to go and fighton the side of the Lord.” Bashful darkies sometimes a= THE FOURTH f<_> DPD BALI WILL BS GIVEN AT ¥ On THURSDAY, Bopt. 17th, 1853, BY THE FRIENDSHIP OLUB.
