On Monday,a man named James T. Owens, who livee with a woman named Mar- garet West, went among the contrabands, and Margaret, who seems to have been jealous, tollowed him, and a fight ensued between them. Both parties were arrested by Serg: t MUustead and Officer Crump, and both were fined by Justice Fergason; and Owens was also ordered to give security to keep the peace. About the same time, Mary Bayne, a white woman, and the mother of ke child, was ar- rested for cobapiting withanegro. The evi- dence was clear, the parties having been caught in the act, and yesterday morning Jus- tice Fergueon committed her tothe workhouse. Mrs. Bayne claims to be a refugee from Fred- ericksburg, and she says as soon as she gets eut of this scrape she will go to Philadelphia, where her friends reside. ger ee Tus Batt ano Pic Nic Yesterpay.—The bsll and pic nic for the benefit of such mew- heis ofthe Fourth Ward police as had been drafied, came off yesierday at Larfier’s (tar- Gen, as advertised in the Siar. It was certainly the most magnificent affair of the kind that ever took place in these gardens. The benefit proved to be a eubstantial one, for the nett proceeds amounted to the haxdsome sum of meu). The garden was decorated in beauutul style during the afternoon, and when the pa- vilion was cleared for the ball at night, it was brilliantly illuminated. The music tor the occasion was furnished by Professor Weber and his band. The only inconvenience was a Jack of Toom to accommodate the immense number that desired to participa «. (rood order was strictly maintained: not an offensive act or werd was permitted. Several improper persons appeared at the gates, and one or two maraged to get inside, but as soon as the vigi- lant officers recognized them they wera quickly removed from the gardens and sent away. It was the largest party ot the season. Sa TrePic-Nic at THe NavY-YARD.—Thepic- nic given last evening at Beckert’s Gardea (Navy-Yard) by the Pleasure Quadrlle As- sociation (composed of the workmen of the laboratory) was one of the most agreeable affairs of the season, and those present, the officers, (military and naval,) soldiers, sailors aad civilians enjoyed themselves hugely in dancing, singing and promenading with the bandsome ladies present; aud who does not ‘snow that the Navy- Yard ladies are all hand- some? A noticeable feature of the occasion ‘was the brilliant fireworks p: mepered by Mr. A. Martin. late of Philadelphia, but now of our Navy-Yard. The band of Prof. Shroeder made the music, and under the suj Kablert, Luckett, Reilly, eton and Dawson, the managers, every: off as merry @o a ‘marriage bell.” Mr. Joha Thompson, and the quarterman of the laboratory, and formerty the janitor at Odd Fellows’ Hall, had the Police ‘@rrangements under his charge. SaocLp BE ATTm=SpED To.—There hae been | considerable complaint of late in regard to the | removal of dead horses; in some portions of | the city the carcases being allowed often to re- main some days. Se dayssince a carcase laid near the Navy Yard air, and the officers of the ‘d were obliged to have it removed te avert the threatened pes- tilence from that section of the city. It maybe that the authorities have as much as they can attend to in removing them, (the number da- Ting the warm weather being largely increased, ) Dut we would suggest that with the increase of the number of dead horses, a corresponding: increase of force sheuld be made. Granp Seciat Fretivat.—a@ grand cociaa feetival and entertainment will take place at Lovtier’s Garden, to-morrow, August20. There will be a concert, ratic entertainment, and @ rope ascension durmg the day. and in the evening @ grand display of freworks anda ball. The schooner lost her main- mastinthe collision. The Tilinois was bound down, and the schooner, which had a valuable cargo on board, was bound to Baltimore. The ordpance steamer Hattimors, Capt. Mitchell, went to the assjstance ot the schooner and towed her into Cornfield Harbor, and this morning her consignees in Baltimore were telegraphed for assistance. SoS Sa ASSAULT AND Batreny.—Last night, be- tween the hours of 11 and 12 o'clock, the tail- oriug and scouring establishment on I street, between Vermont avenue and Sixth street, ‘was entered by a party of six cavalry sol- diers, who assaulted Jas. W. Hampton, who had charge of the shop at that time. After knocking him down they made off with sey- eral pieces of clothing belonging to other par- ties. No clue haa yet been made aa to who they were or to what they were atiached. * ee A Frient.—Some days since, Robert Brooks, colored, fell out with his «* woman,” and the latter went to live with Mary Jackson. Yes- terday Brooks became repentant, and went to hant ap his “half,” when he aud Mary Jackson bad a fight, the result of which was the arrest of both partirs by Sergeant Milstead.
