Mr. Thomas has, by authority of the City Councils, erected gates across the canal at Twelfth straet bridge. itis claimed that by their peculiar construc. tion the vast accumulation of mud and filth in the canal will be washed into the river, and that this reservoir of stenches will thus again Le made useful for commercial purposes.
