THE STORY OF TRE weaver'vasusia:? {CONTINUED} « Have you ail you want?” asked my ool jon. «© AM,” I replied. “I will leave you, then,” hesaid, after 2 pause in which he had been silently and eagerly contemplaung the stilt face of the dead; “my presence, perha} Aeagre de you.” «Not at all,” I replied, Reeuly; for Ithonzht upon this cecasion, in spite of the proverd, that three were company. 1 continued to draw, while he stood silently at the foot of the couch—a half stifled and con- vuleive fob irom time totime breaking the otherwise oppressive silence. As I glanced at him fartively, I noticed that grief or some cause bad wrought axcreatand dreadful change | in his face since I lastsaw him; his cheeks were iched and hollow, his eyes dulland haggarc, is face altogether worea leaden and unearthly hue, strong!y resembling the face of the dead woman before ur. It was evident that since 1 saw him Jast, he bad suffered intensely; he was suftering intense- dy row. LI fonnd, before long, that it was ne- cessary that I should make some alteration in the arrangement of the body. It was habited in ashroud and the jawe were bound up, in the customary manner, with alinop bandage. ‘This latter1 proposed I should remove, and tor that parpose I approached the couch. But betore 1 eould effeet my purpose, he sprang before me and wildly waved me ba his eyes glittering with an Swful excitems which wae 4 little short of madness, “No, no!’ cried he, fiercely, pushing me Swsy with his leit hand; ‘noone but me—no one but me! As he spoke he loosened the bandage, and then laid the linen down by the side of her. ‘Then, ber jet blacu hair, in thick, glossy ring- lets, fell about her face and upon her snowy bescm. She looked very beantiful as she lay there, 60 calm and still. Linvoluntarily said as muci but the next moment I regretted having spoke! for my words called forth a burst of passionate raving from my companion, which were ter- Tific in their utterance. “Ye ie screamed, rather than cried, as he fell upon his knees at the bedside, and kissed and sobbed over one of the cold, white hands which lay crossed apou the dead woman's breaet. “Oh, yes, she is beautifal—an ange! as she is! Oh, just Ileaven, why was I robbed ot her! What have I done that I shouldsutfer so! Oh, God, give me strength to bear the sight of her whom I have loved more than my immortal soul, lying here stark and dead before me. Hutwhatis therein her death I should grieve for !’ he continued; in quite an altered tone, at the same time tearing his hair and grinding his teeth in fury. “I would rather see her cead thar in the arms of the black-hearted wretch that robbed me of her. Hatha! she is dead! and I rejoice, for my bitterness of grief is shared by him. J can console myse!f by the thought that every pang Isuffer rends his heart as it does mine.” «She was not, then, your wife !* “My wif he answered savagely; «‘noshe wite. She was led,and I was deceived, and shemarried him. That is why I bave had to do what I have done to obtain her yortrait. I would have her portrait, though the grave robbed me of her dear self. But they robbed her of it, 1 euppoee, 8s thev have robbed me of her.” «Whatis that!’ said I, pointing to the wo- man’s neck, upon which it seemed tome somre thing glistened brightly. “It isa chain, 1 think.” He uttered a low cry and sprang at it. Next woment he heldin his hand a gold locket, to which the chain had been attached. “Itis mine!” he cried, ina transport of dee light. «Jt is the portrait 1 gave her. God bless ber! I thank thee, Heaven, for thy infinite mercy !" and stooping ever he kissed the cold lups of his dead loye with frenzied eagerness | babbling incoherent words of endearment as be did so, Then springing to his feet, and heeding hot an | effort which I made to retain him, he caught | up one of the candies, and, clasping the locket | to his heart, hastily quitted the apartment. I called after him londiy, bnt he made no re- | ply. Doubtless, he wanted to be alone to open | ibe locket. I am not quite so sure that a fellow inclined to be neryous atthat sortof thing might not have been seized with a panic at the idea of being thus left alone todraw a dead woman’s portrait.
