This is one of those delightful entertainmeats which can be visited | by all, old and young. ee SES DEDICATION OF THE Jewish SyNAGocuE— Interesting Ceremonies. —Yesterday afternoon the new Synagogue on Eighth street, between H and I street, (formerly the M. E, Church South,} was dedicated by the congregation with appropriate ceremonies in the Presence ef a large audience. Several of the clergy of the District weré present, among them Reys. W. M. D. Ryan of the M. E. Church, and C. T. Cochel and Oliver Cox of the M. P. Church, and S. P. Hill of the Baptist Church; also many prominent citizens, including the members ot our City Councils, members of the Bar and the Press. The ceremonies were begun at the old Syna- gogue at Harmony Hall on D street, between Twelfth and Thirteenth streets, where the con- gregation assembled at 2 o'clock. Here the prayer Minchio (evening prayer) was said, and Dr. Hocbheimer of Baltimore, delivered a short tarewell address in German, after which the congregation repaired to the new Synagogue. ‘The live books of Moses, which are written on parchment enveloped in veivet, were taken in carriages in charge of the President of the con- gregation, lsaac Herzberg. assisted by the two oldest members, Jonas Glick and Solomon Pribram, and the Reader, Samuel Weil. (On arriving in frontof the tabernacle the band pertormed a march and came out of the side door, preceded by two young giris. clad m while and wearing blue scarfs, carrying on a small cushion, intended for the purpose, the keys of the synagogue, which they delivered io the President of the congregation, the who entrance and opened the ot the Thora Scrolls (the then entered the Sanctu: And proceed to their respective stations in fror of the reading desk, foliowed by the congrega- ton and assembly. The services were com- menced by the choir singing Ma te vu (a song of praise) in excellent style, assisted by the or- nes the latter being under the direction of er Wazner, and the choir under the i. L. Biont. The choir numbers voices, some of them being The Rabbi, Rev. Dr. Isaac Leeser, of Phila- delphia, who hed been tili now seuted at the Tight of the alter, approached tne altar and recited Sima /srat! (Qn acknowledgemaat of a Supreme Being who reigneth forever,) which was repeated at the reading desk and the choir; the Rabbi and reader being clothed in their usual yestment:. The Rabbi said the Sie Pig! a, (& dedicatory prayer. } The bearers of ThoraScroils walked around the sanctuary three times, passing slowly down one aisie and up another, the orchestra playing a hymn, and the choir afterwards singing (accompanied by the orches Ono ad Onoi, (& 200g OL praise.) The doors of the Holy Ark, which is imme- diately benind thealtar, were then opened, and the Thora Scrolls were deposited therem by Key. Dr. Hochheimer, of Baltimore; the choir singing the introduction to Mf Nuch (8 hymn peculiar to opening the «rk,) and closiaz with Ee Chayim, (@ hymn peculiar to the clozing of the doors of the ark.) Rey. Dr. Leeser read in English from 26th to 44th verses of the Sth chapter of the First Book of Kings, and delivered the following prayer, which is used by them at every service A PRAYER FOR THE GOVERNMENT. Almighty God, who dispenseth salvation unto the deserving, and mercy unto the yir- tuous, whose dominion 1s an eyerlastiug king- dom, who delivereth the afilicted and oppreseed, when they call upon Him, from the sword of destruction, Who maketh a way to the sea and a path through the mighty waters. may He bless, preserve, guard and assist his exceliency the President of the United States ot America, and all the officers of the National Government, the Vice President and members oi Congre the Mayor of onr city, the civil authorities, the citizens of Washington, and all the nations of the earth. May the Supreme King of Kings, ni his infinite mercy, preserve them and grant them long life. Deliver them from all manner of trouble and danger. Inspire them and their counsellors, © God, with benevolence and friendsbip towards this and all other congrega- tions of thy people, our brethren. In our life may Judah be saved and Israel dwell in sufety, and may our Redeemer, the true Messiah, come into Zien, which God in his infinite mercy grant, and let us say amen. A hymn was then sung by the choir, accom- | panied by the orchestra. Dr. Leeser then preached a short and very interesting sermon, in which he gaye a history their religion. They had lived in one faith tor upwards of thirty-five centuries, sinca God had instructed them, through Moses, how to adore him, and they knew that God had fa- vored them, and for many years they dwelt in peace and harmony together; but now they were looked on as a degraded race; no one had a kind work toi them, and the finger of scorn ‘was pointed often at them. It was said that they had done nothing for civilization; but he contended that this was an error. Although they had not done much in the invention of armsand instruments peculiarto war, they h d done much to civilize the world. They ad trials in prefusion, but these were nothing compared to God’s blessings. They had ltved in one faith for ages, and now the same prayers which were handed down from Moses, and the commandments given him, are still re- ligiously observed. hey dissented from many of those present, but not from any hatred. They called not upon a triune God, but upon one God; they had no idea of the three persons in the Godhead. But they could not persecute others for not believing 2s they, for they could not limit God’s mercy. | Is not the rain and the sun, sky and elements % bless the heathen as well as the Christian? Ifany said that their’s was a religion of perse- | cution believe it not. They had asa class al- ‘ways been obediext to the laws of the land in which they lived, and their hands had not been tainted with blood even to purchase for them- Selves that inestimable boon—freedom. But Hebrew blood had been shed in Eu: and America, and has been shed for nations having sympathy with them. They would not teach thein children to hate their fellow-beings, and would not recite the atrocities committed against them. But they would tell them how much Israel has snffered in civilization. They were but a small number in this country, and but atew were in the world. ‘The watchword of God as they understood, had not become known, but their mission was @ glorious one. carnal weapons that God would establish his Kingdom, but ‘by his everlasting spirit, and they still looked for his coming, when he ‘would establish his kingdom. With many the lerm applied to them, “Jews,” was as a term ofreproach. The name Jew was derived from Judah, which means, « From this time I will praise the Lord.” When people can sleep se- curely in the forests without fearing the robber or the wild beasts, and what is riore, when they shall be free from the maleyc ent hate of their fellow man, they expect thi coming of the Messiah, who will bring pe&:e to them, aad with his wrath will be slay the wicked. He had spoken of facts only, and had labored to prove that their religion was one of love. and not of hate; that they believed that their faith would be rewarded. He admonished the Israelites that they must walk blameless ‘in the law, and keep the Sabbath boly. The Doctor’s sermon was listened to with es attention, both by Hebrew and Chris- ian. The dedicatory ceremonies were then con- cluded by the choir singing a choral, nad the —. services introductory to the Sabbath The bullding, which was formerly the Meth- diet Church South, was parchased by the congregation last March for $3,000, when the Government were using it a8 a the Hebrew congregation then numbering bat thirty persons, and having, when the gaastion wes frat p: but $600 in their treasury. AAs soon a8 the building was given up by Gov. ernment the congreyation took possession, and under the direction of the following managers and building committee the improvements were Atonce entered upon: —Isaac Herzberg, B. Kauf- man, G. i lag, § King, Levi Bar, penkeimer, Mor- rita Oppenheimer and ney? Behrend. plane were drawn by 8. T. G. Morsell, an ‘work was executed undor the superinten, of John U. Harkness. Spacious galleries have been erected on the | side and at the eastend, the latter being for the j accommodation of the excellent choir attached to the congregation. The entrance to the syua- | gogue is through a hall on the basement floor j to the west end, where there ara two flights of ; Stairs. Inthe basement the floors have been raised, and the large room has been partitioned into 1X rooms, three on each side of the hall. Those on cne side will be occupied by the jani tor, and those on the opposite side as a school- Toom, Meeting-room, and bath-room, respec- lively. In the east end of the sanctuary a neat railing encloses raised platform, on which is the reading desk. Directly in the center, above and behind which, on a still higher platform, isthe altar, and immediately behind the altar doors (which are sliding) being opened, a heavy purple curtain 13 seen, on which is an inscription in golden Hebrew characters, sig- other shall be worshipped.” Behiad this cur- tain are deposited the authorized version of the Scriptures (the Thora Scrolis,) the vestments, breast- plate, and other things pertaining to the priestly office. F Yesterday the galleries and columns were tastefully decorated with evergreens and the American flag. Many of the members of the choir were dressed in white, and the whole appearance of the church and congregation was highly pleasing to the eye. The cost of repairing and remodeling the building bas been about #1,500; making a total cest, including the purchase, of about $12,500: of which there has been raised all but about | $560, and this deficiency was probabiy raised | yesterday. Two thousand dollars, hawever, was advanced by members, who took stoc! The congregation now numbers about &0 pe! sons, and is under the charge of Mr. Weil, the reader. The Israelites as well as the Christians, it would seem, have their divisions—their Old school and New school churches and teachers. The congregation of the synagogue dedicated yesterday hold by the old schovl, and thus they have no organ, it being held by the old school folks that the use of the organ necessitates the breaking of the Sabbath from the manual labor required in working and playing that instru- ment. A noticeable feature of a Hebrew congrega- | tion is the separation of the sexes—the males taking the seat of honor on the floor, and the females being assigned seats in the galler: The males wear their hats during the services, and Dr. Leeser delivered his sermon in a black beaver. 2 CENTER MARKET.—The market was quile , lively this morning, at the following prices Beef, best cuts, prib.15a20!
