-_ LUCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT, WASHINGTON THwATER.—The St. Denis ‘Troupe is meeting with fine success, and it is aeserved. For two weeks now they have diawn large and appreciative audiences, and {| every act has been received with» applause. The management made a good hit when they brought the troupe to thiscity. To-night, Mlies Rosita, Louise, Augusta, Eugeine, Messrs. Au- guste, Donetti, Cann, Cappola, and all the prominent performers appear. CANTEERBURY.—The popularity of this music | hall wayers not, and whether in hot or cold | weather large houses are the rule and vacant seats the exception. Another fine entertain. | ment will be given this evening. Eva Brent | willsing favorite songs, Szoliosy and his troupe willappearin pantomime, and the Ethiopian iroupe will make merriment for all. Vaninties.—The grett feature this week at | P, the Varieties has been the performance of the rew locsl drama, ++ The Belle of Was..ington.” | It willbe performed ayaim this evening. ‘The | regular concert hail bill willalso be performed. A yariety of new songs, acts and dances will be givin by the popular company performing | ¥ | here. —e | ATTEMPT OF PRISONERS TO ESCAPE FROM Thnk CENTRAL Grakpno .—This morning, about halt-past one o'clock, the sentinel on duty at the south end of the west wall of the Central Guardhonse, discovered & number of men upou the root oi the building, and at once raised the alarm by exiling for the corporal ot the goard. Tn order to make all secare, double sentries-were placed around the ent building, anda search was at once instituted and in cell No, 16, where were contined a num- ber of vagrants, theives and pickpockets, there was found cutin the ceiling and throngh the slate roof a square hole, capable of allowing a man fo pass through. George Cassedy, arrested as a professional thief, was taken in® charge, and upon his re- fusal to tell all about the affair, he was sub- jected to a shower bath by order of Lieut. ‘Henry S. Thompson, of the 17-th N. Y yolun- teers, the officer on duty at the time. The shower bath however, appeared to baye no effect upon Cassedy, and he was subjected to the punishment of being hung up by the thumbs; and after suffering this torture until he evinced a willingness to divulge all he knew of the attempt to escape, he was let down, 2nd informed tbe oflicer that he had cut the hole himself, and was afterwards assisted 1 in the cell. Rob&t Jarviss, who is in finement for an ati¢mpt at robbery, was Iso properly secured, as being one of the ringleaders in the attempt to escape. The whole party were secured in a cell in the lower part of the guard-house, and Cassedy was ironed and placed inadark cell. All the | parties who attempted to escape are pickpock- ets, thieves and vagrants, and are held until such time as they can be paraded through the streets and sent off north. The viyilunce of the guard and officers on duty has thus prevented ihe turning loose upen this community of an inerease to the population by no means desi- rable. ae A Mixep CaAse.—Some time s 2 a soldier Visited the house of Madame Pa.usine Mey-r, on Fourteenth street, next to the corner or N north; and the company of the gay dameels proving agreeable he repeated his visits, and upon one occasion lost his watch, a silver one ot some value, and no one in the house acknowl- edged haying seen it. Yesterday morning the Mudame bad a quarrel with her female board- and turned them out of the house. They proceeded directly to Sergeant Cronin, of the Fourth Ward, who had been on the iookout f.r the watch, aud informed him that Maiame Meyer bad it. The Sergeant, in company with r Pendle, searched the house, and found watch, and arrested the Madame and Cath- arine Chill, « servant, and took them te the Fourth Ward station. Witnesses testifled that the servant girl found the watch on the floor and gave it to August Meyer, the reputed hus- b nd of the Madame, and the witnesses kept it x secret from the soldier and the police until now. They also charged the Madame and her husband with keeping a bawdy house, aad one of them testified that she paid the Madame bed money the night before, and also that she had paid the husband as much as fifty dollars in | the lust three weeks. Justice Giberson held the man and wite to bail in $300 each for keep- ing a bawdy house, and the husband separately in 3300 additional for the larceny of the watch. ‘The bail was speedily given. The case being ended, and the proprietors of | the honee having returned to their dwellin:, the witnesses went there in company with some j} male friends, or “lovyers,” and demanded their | clothing. The demand created a muss, the re- | sult of which was the ornamenting ot Meyer's forehead witha knot, with various ex- tending from the center, and several smaller protuberances on divers parts of the head, evi- dently by the application of a billy. Meyer at once went fora warrant to haye the parties | a@rrested. In the meantime, Henry Myers, Mrs. Pauline | Myers, and Annie Clark were arrested for dis- | orderly conduct, by Officer Franklin, on the | complaint of Mr. Colclazer, and taken to the Second Ward station, where their cases were Tuled tor trial to-day. The names are written differently on the station house register. sities ae DeaTus oF Souprens.—The following have been reported to Capt. Epitors:—As the improvement of the streets is a subject of frequent publiqamen- tion, in your colamns, and wil!, I have no doubt, necessarily claim and receive the atten- tion of the proper authorities, national and municipal, at anearly day. It is to be hoped that the gutters on the numbered streets cross- ing the Avenues and lettered streets will have attention. In many cases they are an unmiti- gated nuisance; dangerous, uncomfortable, and unnecessary for drainage, and fit only to ren- der riding dangerous and disagreeable. That Acroes I street, on the west side of Twelfth, is &@ specimen. It is useless, I presume, to re- mark upon the mode of grading and graveling streets. The whole bed is put down at once as it progresses, when it is immediately cut into hills and hollows by travel, never to be regu- dated. There is but one way todothat work ‘well, and that is to gravel by thin layers, roll each layer as it is put on, and after rains, and prevent travel on it tilidone. Any other course only serves to make mud holes and new con- tracts. P. B.P. In THE WRONG Pew.—Yesterday, while two of Captain Johnson’s detectives were crossing the Anacostia bridge, they were stopped by a man who wanted to know if they were fiding Government horses, and, after an examina- tion, said that they must be delivered to him. ‘The man’s authority for making the arrest was demanded, and he claimed to be one of Col. Baker’s detectives, with a roving commission to huntup Government horses anywhere in Maryland or Virginia. Capt. Johnson's officers conveyed the man te Ool. Baker's office, and thence he was committed to the Central Guard- house, being recognized as an old offender and horse-thief. —>——__ CoxsorrpTs YOR MassacnussTTs Ruci- ¢MENTS.—Major Edmunds, of the Thirty-second Massachusetts regiment, and it. Phelan and Lieutenants Christopher Plunkett, and J. W. McNamara, of the Ninth Massachusetts regi- iment, passed through the city yesterday, on their way to Boston, for the purpose of taking in charge & number of the Massachusetts con- scripts to fill up their regiments. nag ea ATTEMPTING TO PICK PockETs.—A soldier named John Walsh was arrested yesterday and committed to the central guardhouse for an attempt to pick the Pockets of soldiers who were lying asleep in the Smithsonian groands. He was caught in the act by another soldier, and was arrested, notwithstanding kis pu on airs, and alleging that he was a detective. —_—_—_—._—_— DrowrEp.—On Thursday, R.
