od) LOCAL.NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT, ‘WASHINGTON THEATER:—The St. Dennis Troupe has proved an immense success, and every night last week parties who could not obtain seats were turned away from the Wash ington Theater. For to-night a splendid bill is offered, consisting of a new pantomime entitled «The Two Simpletons,” the pew ballet «‘Taran- tules,” performances on the tight rope and flying wire by M’lles Louise and Rosite, anda wariety of dances, by the rest of the troupe. CanTEKDURY.—Marager Sinn announces a great bill for this week. The Rayel pantomime «Robert and Jaques” will be performed. Eva Brent remains, and will entertain with that fine singing which has made her so much admired. The Court of Beauty will appear in pantomime, ballet, &c., and the corps of Ethio- pian performers will give a variety of their best delineations. Vaxtetrzs.—In addition to the regular con- cert hail entertainment there will be performed at the Varieties this evening a striking new Jo drama entitled the « Belle of Washing- ton,” being the alleged scenes in the life of a young lady of this city from the altar to the dissecting table . gees ARE SST GEORGETOWN PUBLIC ScHoors.—The an- nuel examination, which was commenced on the 14th in the school under the care of Miss Reed, and heretofore noticed, was continued on the 15th, 16th and 17th. The Junior ’emale Department, Mrs. Marion Edmonston teacher. was ¢xamined on the 15!h under the supervision of Mr. Magee, of the Board of Guardians, all of whom, with one exception, were present. Forty chil . Were present, nine being absent from sickness and other good causes, On the iGth, the Senior Male Departmeut, under Mr. W. H. Craig, yvith 10 out of 42 present, was examined under the supervision of Mr. W.-H. Tenney, of the Board of Guardins, the eutire board being presedt throughout the ex- ercises Ou the 17th, the Senior Female Department, under Miss M. J. Good, with 46 outof 53 present, | ‘was examined under the direction of Mr. G. ‘W. Beall, president of the board, the whole board, with one exception, being present. Atall these examinations a goodly number of visitors attended, and the plan adopted re- dieved them from the irksomeness which usu- ally attaches to school examinations, and made the time pass pleasantly, keeping the andieuce anteregted and attentive, instead of being oblige to seek reliefin disturbing conyersa- tion. The examinstion was conducted by the teacher, who is always better qualified for it, under the direction of the member of the Board @ppoimted for that purpose, and held respon- sible tor its proper conduct. Then, the exam- inations were not prolonged, while the entire range of the studies was gone over in such a ‘way as to show the acquirements of the chil- dren as satisfactorily as if they had consumed double the time in the usua! way. The result of all these examinations, was, generally speaking, satisfactory; and would compare fayorabiy with any schools of the same grade, notwithstanding their progress has béen very seriously interrupted during the year by a change of teachers, growing out of the resignation of two of the most experienced —one seeking relief from the drudgery of teaching by a hymenial sacrifice. Itis the intention of the Board to open'two more schools next year, tor which purpose it has had a handsome house built in the north- westend of the town, containing two large rocms, und hns ordered new furniture for them; which it has been enabled to do by the more liberal provision lately made by the cor- porate authorities, for their support. The public distribution of medals and premiums will take place at 4 p. m., on Mon- day the 20th, at the school room, when there will bean address delivered by Z%. Richards, peat of Washington, and good music by a nd. gee DARING Ropreny aT THE SMITHSONIAN.— On Friday night a daring attempt was made to commit a robbery at the Smithsonian Insti- tute. It appears that the night watchman, Mr. Henry Holland, heard a noise caused by glass being broken in that part of the building ap- ropriated to the use of the National Gallery. He at once commenced asearch, and found that the case containing the Japauese curiosities had been broken into and a number of articles taken, among them a handsome box inlaid with gold. He proceeded further in his ex- amination, and found that the outer glass of the case containing the coin of different nations had been cut. This case is of a double plate glass, and Mr. Holland Supposed that the noise he heard was occasioned by the fall of some instrument which the burglar intended to use to cut into the inner case. A soldier, pretending to be asleep, was found stretched upon the floor, and he was arrested and eom- mitted to the Central Guardhouse; the box above referred to and a bottle of chloroform having been found upon his person. The prisoner gaye his name as Edgar Packard, and on an examination before Justice Fergu- son, he said that he went into the museum while under the influence of liquor, and laid down and went to sleep, and knew nothing further until the watchman woke him up, and placed him under arrest. It is supposed that he had an accomplice outside, to whom he passed some of the articles, but as yet ne other arrests have been made. The box was return- ed to Professor Henry, and i’ackard was com- Mitted to jail tor court. SS ea CeUET-MARTIAL.— A court-martial, to be composed of Major General E. A. Hitchceck, President; Brigadier Generals G. W. Morrell, J. J. Abercrombie, J. P. Hatch and S. A. Mer- edith, and Major T. Gaines, Judge Advocute, has been constituted by the War Department, and will mence its sittings to-day, (the 20th,) or as soon thereatier as practicable, for the trial of several military and civil offenders of more or less importancs. pee ee geet Rorrery.—Last night, about 12% o'clock, the residence of Mr. J. Thompson, on E street, near the corner of Tenth, was entered by a burglar, and &@ gold watch, valued at $100, and asum of money were stolen. No clue to the thieves. es SELLING Liqgvor To Sor.prers.— Thomas muelly, Bridget Turner, D. Geno and Otto Sick were all arrested on Saturday, charged with selling liquor to soldiers, and were com- mitted to the Central Guard-house. SS PrnsonaL.—Mr. Humphrey Bland, well- krown in matters theatrical hereaboat, has leased the Winter Garden Theater, New York, for the fall and winter season.
