Mae SES Wuiskey Rows.—Thursday afternoon, there Was quite a lively time among the soldiers and restaurant keepers on Fourteenth street west. Most of the soldiers were under orders to move, and they said they were determined to take a social drink; and the whiskey sellers being willing to sell them whiskey, many got drunk and became diserderly. Sergeant Smith, with Francis Clark and Wm. Kemble, ot the Tenth New Jersey, went to the restaurant ot P. Her- mann, on Fourteenth, near D street, and took a drink and paid for it. Soon afterwards they ‘were invited by another person to drink. They accepted the invitation, but the generous gen- tleman did not pay, and Hermann demanded pay from the <oldiers. They refused, and arow ensued. Clark was knocked on the head with a hammer by Herraann, and Hermann was in turn knocked down by Sergt. Smith. The fizht ‘Was very cloge for & while, and in the mids! of it Hermann’‘s wife was struck on the head and bady cut. The soldiers were turned over to ilitary;and P. Hermann was fined #21 for selling liquor to eoldiers, by Justice Clay- ton. Quite a pumber of out heads and black eyes appeared in the Second Ward Station at night; all resulting from the teo free use of «Jersey Lightning.” = ee COULDN'T PURCHASE HER LovE.—A few ‘weeks agoa Mexican named Lawrett Estra, became enamored of a free woman of color, but of a very light hue, residing on Twenty- first street, and immediately commenced pay- ing his addresses to her, but she was incredu- Jous of his sincerity, of the sweet whisperings of love, and intimated that she did not believe Estra; whereupon he handed her a twenty dollar note as an evidence of his sincerity. A tew days later, she, after spending most of the money, so far forgot her “greaser” lever as to fall in love with an American citizem of Afri ean descent of a much darker hue, which fact coming to the knowledge of Estra, he immedi- ately went to see her and offered to release her trom the engagement with him it the money he had paid to secure her love was refunded. She could net raise the amount, having spent it, and he threatened her. She ther procured & warrantand Estra was arrested by officer Calhoun, who took him before Justice Drury, but the girl failing to appear, having, it is thought, transferred her love back to the Mex- ican, the latter was dismissed.
