LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Canteunury HALLstll continues tobe filled nightly. This is not to be wondered at, aus M:nager Sinn has a company which woud Seflect credit upon any music hall, end es sides, he has obviated the great draeber gummer amusements—heat—by 80 array ng the hall as to make it always cool and co able. “The French Spy,” and a waristy oe i tractive features, will be introduced to-night. ee Public School Examinations. j The Female Grammar School of the First Dis- trict, Miss Mary P. Middleton teacher, ao amined on Thursday, July 2d, by Messrs. Mor- seli, Wilson, Wight, Miller and Ellis, of the Board of Trustees, and by Messrs. Z. Richards and 8. John Thomson. There are thirty-three pupils on the roll§ of this school; all present. This school is held in Gorcoran’s Building, on H street, opposite Dr. Gurley's Churéh. It is one of the dnest rooms in the city, and is ad- mirably adapted to school purposes; and it is therefore a matter of regret that it is to be va- cated, as it appears that the Government has need of it. Onthe day of examination the room was tastefully decorated with American flags | and evergreens, and we were pleased to notice in attendance a number ef ladies, parents and relatives of the pupils. The attendance was not, however, so large as could have been de- sired, and it certainly is a matter of surprise that parents do not take a more lively interest in these examinations. The classes in gram- mar andin mental and practical arithmetic xamined rigidly, and the pupils evinced progress, the classes of the present elling (it WAs said) those of last year. There s one thing here, however, in which the pupils might have learned a good’ lesson from some of the secondary and intermediate schools, viz: in correct and symmetrical for- maation of figures. This is no small matter, for badly formed letters eyince a carelessness on the part of the pupil. ‘ The whole school was examined together in geography by Mr. Wight, and so far as it went the exarminaticn was a good one, but the short time allowed for the examination of so im- portant a study could not fully develope the improvement of the classes. All, however, gave evidence of « thorough knowledge of the principles of the study. In reading and spell- ing all the classes were good, and in mental arithmetic answers to questions were given q sly and were generally correct. The copy- books of the young ladies were all neat and clean, and gave evidence of a steady improve- ment in ps anship, But the copy-books usually presented tor inspectionon such oc- casions are ro adequate criterion, for but tew pages are written. It would uo doubt afford a better opportunity of judging of the improve- mentand nm atness of the pupils if all the copy- books used thre: houtthe year were submitted tor examination. A feature of the exe at this school was the examination by Mr. Wight of the whole school in the principlrs of vocal music, of which they evinced a decided knowledge; and | their singing under the direction of the music teacher, Prof. Daniel, proved how well they had been taucht. Thee ination of the school in history, familiar science, philosophy, Was dispensed with on account ef the lateness of the hour. All of the young ladies had presented compo- sitions, but time only permitted five of them to beread. Gneon “Life,” by Miss Maria L. Allen; { “Why do gentlemen smoke,” by Miss Moliis Limbdin; one by Miss Jessie Middleton, (medal | scholar et a former year,) subject, “Action;” { «When I would die,” composition by Miss : Adele Wroe; “The close of another school year,” the last and by far the best comp: jon (as to Matter) that was read. It was written by Miss Adele Tait. This examination was a most pleasing one, and the parents of these children and the pub- | lic generally are certainly indebted to Miss Middleton for tke rapid advances made by the children. At t@ conclusion ot the examin- auon exercises, Mr. 0.C. Wight made a few remarks, and expressed himself highly grat- ified at the results of the past year’s study. Among the many things of interest there, not the leastimportant was the pleasing and grace- ful deportment of the young ladies. Their re- citations, too, had been very commendable. A. quiet attention had been paid to all questions propounded, and a fair and fall proportion of such as were asked, had been appropriately answered. SECOND DISTRICT. The Secord District Male Grammar School, Thos. M. Wilson teacher, was examined on Friday last. The roll shows the names of 43 scholars, all present. The examination was generally satisfactory. The class in mental arithmetic responded promptiy to the many qvestions asked them, and developed much improvementsince the examination of last year. (Questions on the Constitution of the United States were also promptly and correctly an- swered. This school meets in’the basement room of the Berret School House—a large and airy room, well adapted for the purpose. We regret to say that while a majority of the Scholars behaved themselves with propriety, there were a few who gave the teacher much trouble by their disorderly conduct. At the close of the examination the school was ad- dressed by Mesers. Wilson and Utermehle, of the Board of Trustees. The Second District Female Grammar School Was examined on Monday, July 6th, at the sehool-room, corner of Tenth and E streets, by Messrs. Utermehle, Miller, Wight, Ellis, Hol- mrad and Wilson, of the Board of Trustees, and by Messrs. Z. and A.C. Richards. This school is taught by Miss Eliza H. Boggs. She has upon her roll 15 pupils, 38 of whpm were present, Five or six were absent on account of sickness. This school has the reputation of being one of the most orderly and best con- ducted schools in the city. The examination was conducted rigidly. We were glad to see 50 MADY Visitors present, for it must be con- tessed that the public and the parents of the pupils do not take that interest in the examin- ations which their real importance demands. In reading, the first class was eminently good. The examiner selected for the reading exercise One of the most difficult productions—+ Poe’s Rayer”’—which in the main, was delivered with fine effect. The majority of the class ac- quitted themselves well individually, and in reading in concert this class is the best we have yet heard. Mr. Z. Richards put the first class through a searching ¢xamination in grammar; and while they were in this study not quite so forward as in some schools examined, yet it was evident that there was no want of carefal training on the ‘part of the teacher. In addition to the regular studies pursued, Miss Boggs has de- yoted much time to instruction in botany, and the young ladies were well grounded in this pleasing stud, ae showed fine proficiency in vocal mu: The class in algebra was examined by Mr. A. ©. Richards, and showed very fine progress for the length of time devoted to the study. At the close of the exercises the school was addressed in appropriate terms by Mr Utermehle and the Messrs. Richards, and after singing a few patriotic airs the whole pro- ceedings were closed by the singing of the long meter doxology, «Praise God from whom ali blessings flow,” &c.
