There are 6v pupils on the roll, of whom 55 were present. The school is divided into three classes, the { first (furthest advanced) of which pursue the studies of orthography, reading, arithmetic, geography, grammar, history, goveramental instruc ion and dictation exercises. The second class pursues the same studies except govern- mental instruction ; and the third class pursues the three branches first named, history and dictation exercises. Theexamination through- out was rigid ; the first and second classs prob- ably excelling in the evidence given of ad- yancement, A large number of pupils haye been transferred from this school the past year, and a few have been suspended, or have voluntarily left school; so that Miss Moss has but thirteen pupils remaining 8f those who commenced the year with her. This was of | course @ great drawback, but Miss M.managed notwithstanding to bring her classes up to a satisfactory standard. The copy books of the pupils exhibited neatness and progress. Map- Ping is taught to a certain extent in this school, the children devoting a portion of the afternoon to it, and some specimens exhibited were very j well executed. ‘here was one feature of this examination which was noticed with pleasure, which was the evident desire ot Miss Moss to compel each pupil to be judged entirely by his own merits. We have observed that many teachers, laboring under a desire to make the most favorable impression possible, often neg- ject to correct in an answer to a question an error which, being of an unimportant nature, may have escaped the attention of the exami- | ner; thus really thoughtlessly doing the pupil an injustice in not setting him rignt. The ex- ercises closed by the execution of two or three favorite songs, under the leadership of Master Charley Clark, a bright little fellow of ten years, who appears by common consent to be & worthy leader among his school-fellows. At the close of the examination, Mr. O. C. Wight made a few remarks, complimenting the pupils on the excellenee of the examination, and pay- ing a tribute to the worth of Miss Moss asa teacher. The children were urged to renewed exertions is study, and to a faithfal obedience to the comminds of their teacher. Mr. W. closed by giving the school a holiday for Fri- dsv. “This school is held at the corner of Fifth ‘street and Virginia avenue, and the room is as comfortable as any we have yet visited. There Were but few visitors present yesterday, and it is to be regretted that parents do not take a more lively interest in these examinations. ‘They certainly missed something yesterday by not being present here. Secondary No. 1, (male and female,) Fourth District, Miss Anna Adams, (53 pupils on roll, all present,) was examined by J. B. Ellis. This room (Virginia avenue, between Four- and-a-balf and Sixth streets) was built for school purposes, and is a comfortable one in many respects, though hardly adequate in size for the needed accommodation, and being a Single story, withlow ceilings, must be trying- ly ‘hot under a fierce sun. The desks and seats are in excellent order, and we noticed a really sensible good sized stationary black-board ex- tended along the wails here, contrasting favor- @bly with the frivolous, no-account, upright pivot black-boards seen in many other school- rooms. The room was tastefully decorated With evergreens and flowers, and it was | pleasant to see our starry National ensign oc- cupying an honorable place on the walls. We were also glad tosee a number of parents and friends of the school present. Miss Adams is @n experienced and conscientioug teacher, and the general progress of the school was what might be expected from her training. Judging from what passed in the time we were able to be present, ber pupils excelled in arithmetic. ‘The main hesitation was in spelling, but this ‘was in the lower classes, and we have noticed that younger pupils do not always do them- selves justice in this brauch when questioned by othersthan theirteachers. There wassome little bustle in the schooi-rocm or rather at its doors, resulting from the presence of children not connected with the school, who clustered at the open doors and windows, and were noisy at times. Parents, in permitting their children to visit schoois at examination time, should enjoin upon them quiet behavior, and thus save popils, teachers and examiners much annoyance. This school is a mixed one, (male and female,) but the depletions from the male side bes made it largely a female school. Mr. is expressed the highest satisfaction at the ult of the examination, and especially with the test the pupils had stood in arithmetic, in which branch he expressed the opinion they were not surpassed by any secondary school in Washington. At the close of the exercises the Cassell preminm was presented by Mr. Elis to M Sarah Barker by the examining trus iiafter singing some selected pieces of music, the school was dismissed until Mon- day. : Sec ondary No. 2, (male and female,) Fourth District, Miss Mary A. Lee teacher, was exam- ined by Mr. J. T. sell, trustee, and Messrs. John Thompson ani Richards. Of the 55 on the rolliu were present. Theschool room 15 & single story frame, very well ventilated and lighted, but inadequate in space for the number of pu Much taste had been dis- played by so dy or bodies, teacher or pu- pils, and perhaps beth, in the floral decorations o room, which were not only profuse, but arranged with greatelegance. Thisschoolsutf- fered severely from the new classification in September Is which took from it thirty of its best pupils for promotion, or quite one-half the echoul; consequently the present school has been trained up from primary classes. The usual average of promotion is from twelve to eighteen, and the fact above mentioned speaks well for Miss Lee’s training, whick not only senttwo classes up for promotion, but which bas brought the present classes up to the stand- ard exhibited in this examination. The ques- tioning, at the instance ef the teacher, was made rigidly thorough, and the pupils showed themselves so nearly equally good in the vya- YFious branches taught that we found the at~- tempt to discriminate by no means an easy one. ‘The yocal exercises here also deserve commen- dation. Upon the conclusion of the exercises, Mr. C. &. Noyes, by request, made a presentation of a Casse)l prize, for moral conduct, to Master Henry Smullwood, a bright-eyed, intelligent litule fellow. Mr. N. said that the recipient was one of five equally meritorious, and that the prize was assigned to him by the vote of his fellow-pupiis, a fuct which made its reception doubly honor- ble to him. The Seventh-warders were proud of their schools, which were admittedly the best in the city, if not the country, (inquiringly to Mr. Richards, who, if we mistake not, smiled | aesent,) and he (the speaker) had, in the exam- inations of the week, seen a sufficient c1use tor this pre-eminence, bet solely in the ability and qualifications of the gramimarschool principals, but also in the faithtnl and inteiligent co-opera- tion these receive at the hands of the sub-school teachers, and the excellence of the material the latter furnish for the grammar schools. He had been atruck not only by the great advance- ment made by her pupils, but by the remark- ably good order maintained by the Ittle com- munity under Miss Lee’s charge. Babies Mr. Kichards followed in some judvious end pleasantly spoken words of advice end compliment to the hitle folks, and was su-~ eecded Mr. Cassell, in some remarks upon the cuts ofparents, that we wish every fetherand mother im the city could have heard. Thein- consistency shown by parents, who, wholly unable or unwilling to govern and restrain their children at home, expect the teacher, bur- dened with multifarious duties, to undertake this tk, and accomplisa in six hours of the dsy what they (the parente) tind themselves powerless to do in the other eighteen, was for- cibly pointed out, as was aiso the fatal want of ] srenial discipline that allows children to run a! large at all hours of the night. A commendable degres of interest was dis- played by parents in this examination, aad they were evidently much gratified with whst they saw and heard. Lek <. ondary School No. 3, Fourth District, male and female.) Mrs. Mary E. Martin teach- was examined by Mr. J. E. Holmead and y Messrs. Z. Richards and J. FE. Thompson. This school has on ils roll 61 pupils, and 5? were present; waiting admission, 9. Tho building (known as the old Rittenhouse pri- Vito school house) is Rot & proper one, being cid, ricketty, and :rora its position and its sin- gle door and deficiency of windows, not prop- erly lighted or ventilated. The school furni- sure is good, and Mirs, Martin, by making the | other schools in this district which haye passed | under notice, the best progtess was in arith- | metic, mest of her unfavorable premises, in the way ef cleanliness and orueiiy arrangement, hvs contrived to make her room cheerful and in- viting. This schoelalso.lost heavily “by the | draft,” the new classification taking some 35 | of the bestscholars. This school is rated as secondary, but owing toits location, with no other primary near, it has to receive many primary scholars, whieh naturally lowers the grade. Itis due to Mrs. Martin to say thatshe has made what was two years ago (when she entered upon her duties there) the rest: school on the Island one of the best. The easy ‘ity with which she presides over her | school 18 & model in its way, and the order, so far as we could judge, perfect. As at several and in this branch wey passed the | searching examination to which they were subjected by Mr. Holmead most triumphantly. | In reading and in dictation also they were ex- | cellent, and a cluss that last year could barely form the letters of the alphabet, wrote and spelled in a manner to pvt adults to the blush. e noticed a wrinkle here worth adopting in all schools, (and whicb we believe does prevail in several,) .¢. every slate-frame in the room las a covering ef woolen or other eloth, and thus the racket from falling or jarring slates, so snncying usually in the school-room, is quite done away with. Exsminers and visit- tors here expressed the warmest gratification at the progress shown by the pupils. In con- clusion a Cassell prize wis presented to Master Thomas Cridler. Miss Josephine Havenner was adjudged equally meritorious, but the for- mer received it through her generosity. —_——. Col. Keller pre- sided, and he, as well as Capt. Max Conheim, Dr. Heiland, and others, urged the Germans to adhere to their adopted country and to ferm military organizations for her defense. Resolutions were unanimously adopted wherein they declare it to be their sacred duty te support, in the moment of peril, that Goy- ernment which has given them safety and pro- tection. and for this purpose they bind them- selves to form a guard for the city of Washing- ton, so that if the Government shall find it necessary to order the troops now in the capital to the field, the people will be ready to take their places. The third resolution declares that they will consider the appending of their names io the list as a bond that they will enter the service to defend the capital. The lists were then presented for signatures, and a large number of narhes were speedily procured, and the meeting then adjourned to assemble ‘o-morrow (Sunday) morning, at the Metropolitan Hall, in order to perfect the or- ganization thus commenced. = —__— To PERSONS who are weak and sickly, the use of the Sambuci wine will restore their health and strength.
