A reconnoissance by the Switzerland on the 3d discovered a battery of six field pieces and a regiment of infantry holding the shore. The Switzerland engaged them and was siruck seven times, ene shot severing the steam pipe. The damage was repaired, and Capt. Walker, with the Lafayette and Pittsburg, silenced the bsttery and burned the town and commissary stores. The river is now clear between Port Hudson and Vicksburg. HxeADQUARTERS, WaLarr Hitrs, Vicks- burg, June 12.—Evening.—The best informa- tion credits Gen. Loring, at Jackson, with 5,000 rebels, Gen. Walker, at Yazoo City, with 5,600, and Gen. PHILADELPHIA, June 18.—Rear Admiral Foote is lying dangerously ill in this city. His physician has given up all hopg of his recoy- ery. ILLinois Democratic Mass MErETING.— The Iilinois Democrats beld & mass meeting at Springfield, yesterday, and it is claimed that 2 greater number were present than at any other mass meeting ever held in this country. Those who estimated the number say there were present from 15,000 to 100,000 persous—a rather wide margin. Senator W. A. Richard- scn presided. Among the Vice Presidents were Voorhees, of Indiana; Cox, of Ohio; General McKinstrey, and others. Some twenty-three resolutions were adopted, to the same effect as those adopted by the Uhio Convention which nominated Vallandignau. Resolutions were also adopted denouncing Goy. Yates for prorogning the Legislature, the suppression of the Chicago Times and the arrest of Judge Constable and other citizens of Iilinots. The twenty-third resolution is as follows: Resolved, That farther offensive prosecution of this war tends to subvert the Constitution aud the Government, and entails upon th pation all the disastrous consequence of mis- rule and anarchy.
