Bowen's De, at Bayeu Pierre Rebels thin! urs at Vicksbur; th em—The Rumore: rt Hudson Contradicted. CrscinNaTiI, May 15—An unauthentic ru- mor fror: Murfreesboro’ reaches us that 8 ean- guinary battle, by land and water, has been fought at Vicksburg, in which the Union troops were discomfited. It does not accord with re- liable advices, which place Grant eighteen ‘miles east of Vicksburg. It was reported at Memphis, on the 12th, that ‘therepel Ferguson had destoyed twotransports ‘and two barges, cri another, and driven off a gunboat, near senna The Jackson Appeal, of Ma; 6th, contains 2ome details of Gen. Bowen’s defeat at Bayou . Pierre, near Port Gibson. His force is put at two brigades, while the Union force is estimat- ed at twenty thousand. Bowen left Grand Gulf and crossed the Bayou to check the Union advance until reinforcements, known to be coming, arrived. Grant’s movements were too rapid. The armies met at midnight on ‘hursday, three miles trom Port Gibson, and fighting commenced, which continued till Fri- day evening, when Bowen retreated across the Bayou, burning the bridges. This involved the lcss of Port Gibeon, which the Unionists immediately occupied. A number of sick and } ‘wounded in the hospital were captured. On Saturday the Union troops again ad- wanced. On Saturday night the works at Grand Gulf were abandoned, after dismount- ing and destroying the guns, and on Sunday the Rebels crossed Big Black River at Naw- Kinson’s ferry, where they met reinforcements sufficient to make a further retreat unneces- “The rebel total Joss isestimated at 1,000 killed and wounded. Many were left on the field. Several huadred prisoners were captured, in- cluding an entire company of the 46th Missis- sippi regiment. A Virginia battery lost four guns, five men killed, eleven wounded, and nineteen missing. Gen. Tracy, of Alabama, Lieut. Col. Pettus, a brcether ef the Governor oft Mossissippi, and Major Tuckerman were killed. Col, Garnett, of the 20th Alabama, was badly wounded, and Major Hurley, of the 3ist Alabema, mortally wounded and captured. Baldwin’s brigade reached the battle field in time to suffer considerable loss. The Appeal’s correspondent, writing from Vick: burg or the 4th and 5th instants, takes a gloomy view of maiters. He regards the :iver fortifications there as insufficient to stop the passaze of boats, whether iron or wooden, and says, “an oversight wss comnittedin net mak- ing proper defenses below, and that when the gunboats went down the people and military men were deceived: and thonght Grant’s army ‘was to be taken to operate against Port Hudson before attempting Vicksburg. Although sat it will require the utmost caution to avert dis- aster. After having had years of time to per- | fect sll defenses, it appears we are now beset in every quarter where we least expectit. It | may be regarded as contraband to say this, but | it is due that the people should know how | affairs stand, and if any danger threatens, they are entitled to know in what quarter it is and | how it was brought about.” There was great excitement at Jackson on the th, on account of the rumored ap; Tance of the Unionists at Edward's Stution, on the Jack- { s0n Railroad. General Bragg and wife were at Atlanta on the 29th ult. Ontbe?d inst., Bragg issued an erder pardoning all deserters who returned in . seventy days. The Appeal contradicts evacuation of Port Hudson. Governor Pettus issued a pro nation dated May ith, to the people of Mi: ppi, calling on them, in consequence of events known to them, to make a united effort to expel the in- waders. He exhorts them to meet in every county ard hurry forward, and says, ‘-the common safety demands eyery sacrifice.” the rumor of the FROM PORT ROYAL. No General Move against Charleston Yet— Occasional Rebel Raids or Dawtuskie and other Islands. New York, May 15.—From passengers who arrived in the steamship Arago, the following tems of news are obtained : Nothing has thus far been undertaken against Charleston, except that occasionally a small gunboat runs in and draws the fire from the orts, Th? rebels, beyond a dout@ have ob- ained possession of the Keoknk’s guns, and they were trying to take her machinery out. The rebels are making occasional raids on Dawfuskve, have obte ied no signal adyantage, as the force at these po ants is sufficiently large to meet them. There was no probability that anything will | be done in the next thirty days against Charles- ton, as Gen. Hunter has furloughed fonr men from each company for thirty days. It was rumored, though yaguely, at Port Royal, that Serrell’s Engineer Regiment, which had done hard werk in the Department of the South, would be sent Nerth to another sphere of duty. The fleet in the vici the Keokuk, and the aisabled Passaic, are seriously missed by the fleet, which lies now in the different creeks and inlets around Edisto. A few gunboats are stationed off Folly Island, and atthe entrance to Scull Creek, so as to keep the rebels fr: m molesting our troops, S¥naze s & HOWLETT. PKNTERS AND BUILDERS, No. 475.
