Mr. Geo. Hepburn urged the necessity for | reform in municipal! matters, and especially in relation to the public schools, and thought the various nominees of the meeting should be themselves. They offer entertainments whicn 4 areasiways elegant and azresabie; and to at- tend upon them is certainly @ most pleasant way of passing an evening. Police, there was a meeting in the Fourth Ward, assembled last night in the «‘cuncil Chamber, City Hall, for the purpose ot nominating candidates for Alderman and ity Council. On arriving at the City Hall at xbout £ o'clock, our reporter found a party of about seventeen men, on the steps in front of the building: among whom were Capt. Darl- ing, J.T. Clements, Jr., W. H. Goddard, Mr. Chapman, and others, of the city’s floating population. About 8 o’clock, the party entered the building, and organized by calling Mr. H. NN. Gilbert to the chair, andappointing Mr. W. H. Goddard, secretary. Mr. John T. Clements, Jr., said he supposed all knew the object of the meeting. s was held in pursuance ofa call published, and it ‘Was & continuation of a former meeting, at which Capt. Darling presided. (The tamous afternoon meeting, held on a call of fifteen minutes time, and which elected bogus dele- gates to the Richards nominating “Uenven- tion,” who were enabled, by hard running, to reach the conyention in time to take partin the proceedings.—Rep.] He (the speaker) remem- bered that one year agoa meeting was called at which there were present no more people ikan were here to-night, and a ticket was nominated which was elected, and he believea a ticket nominated here would be elected by a handsome majority. The meeting was for the purpose of ndminating suitable candidates to represent the Ward in the City Councils. Mr. W. C. Choate nomimated Mr. George Savage, and Capt. Darling nominated Asbury Lioyd, for Alderman. A stranger, whose name we understood to be Chapman or Champion, said there seemed io be an impression that Mr. Lloyd would decline the nomimation.* He (Mr. C.) was authorized to say that Mr. Lioyd would consent to the use of his name, an e (the speaker) believed Mr. Lioyd could carry the ward, Mr. Clements said he would support Mr. Lloyd it ie would repudiate the nomination he reeeived at the other meeting. Mr, Champion was authorized to say that Dir. Lloyd would repudiate that nomination. Air. Thompson urged the nominatien of Mr. Lioyd, and ssid he would accept it. d ayage shame was here withdrawn, and Mr. Lioyd was nominated for Alderman, one person in the room yoting against him. The following gentlemen were then nomina- ted tor the Board of Common Council, viz: John T. Clements, jr., George Savage, Com- fort S. Whittlesey, Jos. Follansbee and Mathew G Ty, ye: Mr. A. Duvall said his object was to nomi- nite anti-slavery men. He would not vote for. auy man who was in favor of slavery. For thut reason he would not yote for Mr. Savage, even if he werenominated. He was a personal triend of Mr. Savage's, but he was not certain that Mr. S. was all right on the slavery ques- tion. Mr. Choate then desired to withdraw the name of Mr. Savage, but the person who had seconded the nomination objected. A stranger in the back part of the room, whose name nobody seemed to know, expressed his opposition to the nomination of any man who ‘Was on the other ticket. A greatdeal had been said about being in bad company; and this Ineeting should be careful that they did not have the same imputation cast upon them that ‘Was Cast upon the other party. If any nominee of this meeting is going to run on both tickets, Be could not vote tor him. The man who would get into office by seeking the votes of his oppo- Reuts was not worthy the suffrages of honest men. Mr. Thompson said the meeting might rest 4ssured that the Fourth Ward would be con- trolled in this election notso much by party as by personal affairs. They would vote for the best man. This will befound to be one of the most doubtful wards in the city. He (the speaker) did not come here asa Richards man, but would yote for th& best man nominated. Wo test can carry the election in this ward but that of loyalty: and we must put forth men no- toriously identified with the interests of the ward. Mr. Follansbee and Mr. Sayage were notsuch men. Such men, however, as Emery and Whittlesey would carry the ticket. The Chair appointed Messrs. Choate and Frazier tellers, and the meeting proceeded to ballot for candidates for Council. Twenty-one votes were polled, of which John T. Clements received 13, George Savage 8, O.S. Whittiesey is, Jos. Follansbee 10, and M. G. Emery 9 John T. Clements, jr. and C. S. were declared nominated; and the others having received a majority oft the votes polled, another election was held tor the third candidate. Mr. Clements hoped this body would nomi- mate Mr. Savage. He had ever stood firm, and was a staunch Unionist in the dark days when it was dangerous to proclaim one’s loyalty, The Chair also advised the nomi mn of Mr. Savage, on the ground that the ward could not be carried without the Irish vote, and Mr. 5S. could contro] that vote. The bailot resulted as follows: Savage 13, Follansbee 2, and Emery 6. Mr. Savage was therefore declared the nominee. : Mr. William H. Johnson was unanimously nominated for Assessor. . W. H. Goddard, Captain Darling, and T. B. Brown were appointed a committee to inform the above named candidates of their nomination. Adjourned. ; Of the candidates nominated, Mr. Lloyd allowed his name to be used at a meeting held in the Fourth Ward a week ago, and was fairly defeated for Alderman by Mr. Utermehle. At that meeting Mr. L. was present while the bal- loting was going on, and subsequently allowed Himself to be nominated for the Common Coun- cil. Mr. J.T. Clemenfs, jr., a candidate for Coun- cil, claims 4 residence in Missouri. ———— UNCONDITIONAL Union Meeting. —Last evening a meeting of the unconditional Union voters of the First Ward was held at the Union engine house for the purpose of nominating candidates for the Board of Aldermen and Common Council. The chair was taken by George T. McGlue, and W. H. Hines acted as secretary. : The meeting proceeded to select candidates, and Mr. Rapley, H. N. Easby, and Peter Lam- mond were placed in nomination as candidates for the Board of Aldermen. Mr. Dorsett asked it those nominated were true Dixon and Douglas men, and several per- sens vouched for Mr. Rapley. The vote was taken by ballot, and the tellers reported the resultas follows: For Mr. Rapley, 22; Mr. Easby, 10; Mr. Lammond, 4. Mr. Rap- ley was thereupon declared the choice of the meeting amid much applause. The tollowing were nominated as candidates for the Board of Common Council; the under- standing being that the three highest be declared the nominees: Capt. James Kelley, T. Doro- hue, James Hazle, John B. Hines, O. Wistar | Merris, 5. Y. At Lee, Charles Gordon, W. H. Parker, H. OC. Wilson. Mr. G. H. Harrison asked who Mr. Morris ‘wast The chair was notable to give an answer, and suggested that the person who nominated him might tell more of him, bat there was no response. r.
