LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT, Gaover's TH¥ater.—Mrs. John Drew and hor admirable company, in conneetion with that of Mr. Grover, played last night in a most acceptabie manner to one of the largest audi- ences of the season. They appear to-night in the play of “‘ The Royalist, or the Ladies’ Bat- tie,” and the farce of «Somebody Else,” a rich bill. CANTERBURY.—Annetta Galletti, besutiful, charming and graceful as ever, wat ceceived jast night with a perfect storm of applause, and it is safe to assume that crowded, houses will be the order throughout her éngagement. To-night again will be played “Jack Shep- pard,” in connection with the usual diversi- fied Canterbury entertainment. VanieTies.—“Jack Sheppard” isalso played at this resort, and in a delightful manner. Song, dance, and Ethiepian eccentricity are also part of each evening’s entertainment. The Forrest Sisters, Ada Tesman, Harry Leslie, W.S. Bud- ‘worth, and other favorites, are performing here. ~ Swiss Bert Rincers.—Willard’s Hall is at this time one of the most attractive places of umuscment in the city, forthe Peak Family of Bell-ringers are there with their yery pleasing Ddudget of amusements, as bell-ringings and vocal and instrumental music. A more ele- gant or refined entertainment could not well be given. Rusatan War.—This panorama continues on exhibition at Odd Fellows’ Hall, Seventh street. Another attraction has been added in «he shape of the great Stereoptican, exhibiting photographic views of scenery, statuary, build- igs, ruins, &c. The two exhibitions combined form a most attractive entertainment. BaLts.—The Shamrock Club give a ball this evening at Temperance Hall. A good supper will be provided. The nominations of Wm. H. Hines and Jos. Williamson for eorporation police in the First 2nd Second Wards was confirmed. Mr. Sargent, trom the committee on police, introduced a bill to prohibit the throwing of fruit parings upon the paved fcotwalks, and {| #sked ts consiceration at once. He related in- stances where parties had become maimed trom slipping on fruit parings and falling. Mr. Pepper had not the sligittest objection to the bill. Old men ought to be able to take care of themselves, but us young men could take care of ourselves. (Laughter.} He thought | the bill a good one, but doubied whether it could be carried out. Mr. Lioyd wanted to have the bill reterred. | He thought it was imporiznt. There were | other things besides paring of fruit that caused people toslip. {Luughtert.] He desired to pass bill to prohibit slipping under any circum- stances. {Laughter.} He therefore wanted the bill referred, in order that one might be brought in to cover ali cases. Mr. Pepper said it was not usnal to notify the Board of intention to bring in a bill, but he gave notice now that he would, at next meeiing. intreduce a bill to compel dealers in soda water to enlarge their glasses. The special order—the gas light bill—was taken up,and on motion of Mr. Utermehle, it ‘was amended by repealing the clause for fining the gas light company for failure to light and | extinguish the lamps at the proper. times, and inserting in lieu thereof a clause provid- ing that the Mayor deduct payment for gas not consumed; by inserting the words “any other 44as Light Company, ’so that should another company be formed. a contract shall be made with the one eae, the most advantageous terms: and limiting the cost of furnishing and erecting lamps to $35 each, instead of $25. [This bill is very similar to the existing game laws of the neig! boring counties of Maryland.) Mr. Bowen introduced a bill to levy a tax of one dollar on all dogs in the county; which was passed. Mr. Thomas offered @ resofution directing the committee on finance to inquire into the expe- diency of increasing the pay of the Metropolitan police employed in the county; and Mr. Burr, trom the committee, immediately reported a bill previding that ten dollars per month shall be placed in the hands of the Treasurer of the joard of Police, to be disbursed to the police- men on duty in the county; which was passed. Among the reports is one that John F. Carter, formerly.a policeman here, opened a groggery with a man named Roach, near Richmond, at | which place a murder was committed, and Carter and Roach refused to testify against the parties arrested. He (Carter) afterwards moved to Lynchburg, and opened a saloon. A jewelry shop was robbed of several hundred dollars worth ot watches, a number of which were found in Carter’s saloon. Geo. E.
