Advertiser HE The position of NIN MISSISSIPPI. nT: boats down the ry at Vicksburg seem: batteries and the boiding of the enemy at bay. Itinay notennble the Yankees to operate agd he Hill City with any greater prospect of success, butit will doubliess encourage them, and lead the people of the North to belicye s certain. 1t will, however, give the ene P Fiver between Vic The p age ol the gu | burgand Port Hudson, and «prevent the ship- mentof supplies from the country west of the Mis ippl. Ofc we canno? say whether | or not there was 2 want of good management j &t thatimportant point. It may be simply im- pessible cn account of theswiftness of the cur- | rent to prevent boats from pussing; but if so, the people generally, as well as the Yankees, have been deceived. The land movements of e of ippi are in themselves of no small im- ce, and their success seems to indicite per j either that the Confederates in that section are too few in number to meet and check the ad- vance of the enemy or that they have no leader | postessed of the qualities which haye made } the names of Wheeler and Morgan famous. Weeks ago we heard the tear expressed that too large a portion of th» cavalry belonging to tbe army of the west was being transferred to Tennessee, and it was then predicted that the Yankees would seize the opportunity to make raids for the purpose of destroying provisions and the growing crops. The prediction has been fulfilled, and the people of central Missis- sippi are now suffering from the eonsequences of one of the most daring raids which has been committed by the enemy since the war began, In their march the Yankees haye destroyed an immense amountof atores greatly necded at the present time, and have done almostincalculable inbary. to the country. The movement is one of which they may be proud, but it is also one which shonld have been prevented by- our * forces if possible. A leader of ability and energy is evidently needed in Mississippi. The Richmond Dispatch of the 5th, complains that Stoneman’s cavalry raid, in destroying their railroad, prevents the transportation of their wounded in the recent battles to Rick- mond. The rebel Major Gen. Trimble has arrived in Richmond, but has not yet recovered from his wound received in the battle of Manassas. In Jefferson, Ishe county, N.C., Jas. Price and one of his sons were hung for their per- sistent Unionism, by one Capt. John Hartzog and some tn or twelve privates, who were hunting deserters in that vicinity. The Richmond Enquirer of the 5th, says that the reason why the rebel government's $15,- 060,000 bonds recently issued in London sold so high, was because they can be used by the blockade runners in paying the export duty on ; cotton in lieu of specie, while no other rebel government issue is receivable for the same dainty. 4 ‘A Chattanooga correspondent of the Enquirer writing on the 29th instant, contends that «the roovement of the (rebel) army from Tullahoma, *fitteen miles below to War Trace, is looked upon as a'#anitary measure, and not as an eyi- dence of immediate flight.” ‘The same corres pondent complains that Gen. Joe Johnston’s present position in the rebel armies of the West ie simply that of an In- spéctor General, without authority over either ae i Nae ¥ per | Fiour is'eeMling tn Charlotte, Va, at 9258990 | i srsi | on Columbia ttreet, between $ nets POP A (BY winpyersjean be pro- cured Bt, tho eounserysimmtiietely miter ‘the issucog whe paper.
