Recruiting Com- menced—A Colored “Cupperhead.”—Yesterday, recruiting for the Ist District of Columbia Ool- ored Volunteers, which is being raised under the auspices of Col. (Rey.) J. D. Turner, late of the ith Pennsylvania Cavalry, and Lieut. Col. Rey.) W.G. Raymond, late chaplain of Trinity ‘ospital, and formerly of the s6th New York, Was actively entered upon. The more was started at the Contraband Camp, where Rey. Mr. Jenkins, of Rochester, N.Y.; A. L. Sanborn, clerk at Colambia Hospital; and Peter Clay,an assistant at the camp, who are expecting to be officers of the new regiment, urged the men te walk up and give their names, aud were par- ually successful. Abont4 o'clock Vir. Sanborn’s eompany, composed of 15 of the “contras”— 13 trom the College Hospital and2 from Carver— marched into the inclosure, where they re- mained until the time of meeting at Asbury Chapel, which they attended. The younger contrabands showed the mostenthnaiasm in the | enlisting Taovement. One of the first who offered to book his name was a boy not above lt years of ago, who was not, of course, ac- | cepted, and he seemed to be much disappointed, and expressed hie desire to go anyhow, if not as @ soldier, then as a waiter. One man, when uppealed to, refused to gown the ground that he had « family. Mr. Sanborn informed him, that the Government would take care of his family, and asked how many he had, when he replie “A wife mos here,’ and if he went away he could not tell whether it was a girl or a boy, which he seemed to think a serious drawback. After considerable drumming, Mr. Sanborn booked 11 more on his roll, Mr. Jenkins 4, and Mr. Olay 15, making a total of 30 recruited at the camp. Last evening a large and animated meeting was held at the Asbury Chapel. The recruits, which had been drummed up during the day, were seated to tae left of the pulpit, while the benches in front were occu- ral white persons, among whom were J. ©. Howells, of Wis., private Secretary to the Governor of Idaho, Captains Jenkins and Sanborn, Peter Clay, Col. Bingham, of New York, who has apphed for «authority to | raise a colored brigade. Near the church doors, a guard of ten men | from the 39th Massachusetts were stitioned to prevent any disturbance. Revs. Turner and Raymond ascended the pulpit, and opened the meeting with religious exercises. Mr. Snowden, one of the trustees of the church, was called to the chair, and Jos. L.N. Bowen appointed secretary. Speeches were made by Mr. Turner and Mr. Raymond, (white,) and by A.W. Winkfield, Charles Tasco, Sam Williams, S. L. N. Bowen, W. H.C. Hinton, Wm. Wormley and Thos. E. Green, colored. Jos. E. Williams, colored, agent of Central American Emigration was called upon, and on making his appearance was greeted with a storm of hisses, with cries ef copperkcad,” &c., and was obliged to withdraw, being only able to say, ** We must shonider,” &c.
