One hundred and six prisoners, captured by General Hooker's forces at Fredericksburg, on the 2sth ult. reached this city on the 29th- They were confined in the Guardhouse for the night, and yesterday morning were transferred to the Old Capitol. They consist chiefly of members of the 6th Louisiana and 13th Georgia infantry, though we notice here and there among the names representatives of North Car- olina, Alabama and Virginia regiments. Among them we find the following commis- sioned officers: Lieut. Col. Joseph Hanlon, 6th Louisiana infantry; tat Lieut. J. S. Gilbert, 6th Louisiana infantry; 2d Lieut. W. W. Cole, 54th North Carolina infantry; 2d Lieut. 0. 0. Nash, 6th Louisiana infantry. Naw Booxs.—From Philp & Solomons, 332 Pa. avenue, we have the follewing: Tus Nationar Tax Law, Government edi- tion; compiled in well arranged style by E. H. Bradden, the young | authoress who has just shot up to such celebrity | through her striking noyel “Aurora Floyd,” and | kindred tales. Tue PRIMARY MkeETINGS.—In the First Ward, on Wednesday night last, two primary | meetings were held, and each elected delegates —though choosing each a different set of Mr. Dixon’s friends, Inthe Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Wards, friends ot Mr. Dixon were also elected, and ‘without the pretence on the part of his opponents that they even started a ticket in either of them. In the Third Ward, delegetes in favor of Mr. Richards were elected. In the Second Ward, the Richards party claim to have chosen their own friends, al- though the supporters of Mr. Dixon were elect- ed by the votes of more than two-thirds of | those present. | In the Seventh Ward, the Dixon men were admittedly nearly two to one to the Richards i men. Such, in few words, is the result of the pri- mary meetings. coe eee ITS OwN ANTIDOTE.—We have received more communications to-day than we can “shake a stick at,” making complaints of the Chronicle's reports of the ward meetings Wed- | nesday night, especially of those held in the First, Second, Fourth, and Seventh Wards. Gentlemen, keep cool: the Chronicle's style of writing and reporting in reference to the mu- nieipal elections is its own antidote, and none feel more sensibly than the friends of Mr. Richards the terrible fauz pas committed by that paper, and its damaging effect upon their prospects. Decision.—The Commissioner of Internal | Revenue has decided that manufacturers of | sized or bleached wrapping cotton twine or | cord are liable toan advalorem duty of three per cent. on the amount of sales of their pro- | duct. Their liability to pay an advalorem duty | is not at all affected by the tact that the twine cord or thread has previously been assessed and paid tax in its raw state. paStiaie setae |: CoNvVENTION OF Post Orrice AGENTa.—By | direction of the Postmaster General, a conven- tion of special agents of the Post Office Depart- ment will held in the city of New York, on the | first Monday in June. Business matters of | grave importance to the Post Office Depart- | ment and the public, will be considered by this | commission. It is our duty to cautien those who have | Fecently become citizens of Washington, against the impudent efforts of parties who are using the d | S8NE of petty office holders, emall contract A mongers, aspirants for municipal offices they are unfit to fill and rowdies who now follow | the pursuit of ropers-in of inebriated soldiers who are suspected of Laving money in their pockets, that composed a considerable portion of those who attempted by violence on Wednes- day night to prevent the Unconditional Union citizens of the various wards of Washington from electing delegates to their city convention, to create the impression that the Administration sympathises with their rowdy assaults in some of the meetings upon popular rights, or regard them &s its exponents in our local affairs. On the contrary, they are as well known tothe Ad- munistration as to the old Tesidentsof Wash- ington, as persons bent on feathering their own individual nests by the use of any possible means. The Administration, the public may | Tely on it, realizes and appreciates at its true ; value no‘only the reprehensible mode by which these parties seek to assume to control the se- lection of candidates to be voted for by the Unconditional Union men in the approach. ing election, but also the unflinching loyalty of the present incumbents inthe city govern- ment, the re-election of .whom the cabal are Striving to defeat. BALTIMORE, May 1.—The statement that the Government has purchased a large tract of land of the Canton company, Baltimore, for an arsenal, and that the Northern Central Pannsylvyania Railroad company had pur- chasee of the same company a portion of their real estate in East Baltimore, are alike untrue. The last purchase made by the railroad com- pany of the Canton company dates as far back as 1553-4. LOCAL NEWS. gn DR. SUNDERLAND ON NaTIONAL Sixa.—The announcement made by Rey. Dr Sunderland on Sunday last that he would on the day ap- pointed for a fast (yesterday) preach asermon, which it was understood would be somewhat peliical, had the effect,of bringing out a very large gathering, male and temale. Long be- fore the regular hour of service the church was crowded, and it was found necessrry to put seats in the aisles, while many of the con- gregation occupied seats on the steps of the pulpit, and large numbers were standing all about the church. Dr.S. occupied an hour and a halt in the de- livery of his sermon, and it was admitted by all to bea splendid effort in composition and delivery. After detailing what he considered the duty of the people and setting forth the manner in which the day should be observed to make it acceptable to God, he referred to some of the great sins of which it was the duty of the nation to repent in sackcloth and ashes. Among these sins were practical rejection of the Gospel of Christ by so large a mass of the people, idolatry, neglect of God's ordinances, violations of the Sabbath and profanity, cor- Tuption of manners and morals, and cruelty and oppression towards the Indians and Afri- cans. junderland’s reference to the slave- ry question and the evils and wrongs of hnu- man bondage was listened to with marked at- tention, and the feeling of the audience occa- sionally manifested itself in warm applause. He belieyed Slavery was the apple of discord which had brought out all this bitterness and woe. He did not believe any one portion of the people were alone to blame for cruelty to this unfortunate race, and the injustice practised upon the Negro, was enough of itself to sink the whole nation into the nethermost pit of per- dition. He believed that the time had come, when nothing short ofjustsucha waras we are now engaged in, would open theeyes ofthe people. He believed it was the design of God, that African Slavery should pass away, and Slavery was doomed when the first gun was fired at Anderson and his brave band. within the walls of Sumter. (Applause. Mr. Sunder- land, however, appealed to the audience not to thus interrupt him.) There were those who aecused him, (the speaker,) of being an aboli- tionist ; and who alleged that he departed from the path of Clerical duty. = He defined his position, which was that he was in favor of the abolition of allsins, great and small, and in that acceptation he was an abolitionist. He was particularly severe upon rebel sympathizers who remain in the North under the protection of @ government they affect to despise; and thought they shonld be sent South where they belong. In conclusion, he said this sermon would probably be denom- inated a political one; and he argued to show that because a man was in the pel it, it should not deter him from doing his duty for the country in times like the present. Dr. Sunderland’s remarks did not create any of the excitement some had anticipated, from the nature of his announcement on last Sun- day.
